Great beat. I'm 70 years old. Drummed my whole life. I play this ' Purdie Shuffle. Nearly every time I play. Home at Last, Rosanna, and the Zeppelin beat.

HOme At Last is one of my very favourite songs. The Purdie Shuffle is iconic groove and Bernard Purdie is one of the greatest musicians in history. Such a pleasure to hear this man speak. Thanks for posting this. Anyone who is serious about the art and craft of drumming must get hip to this man.

@@sammominks Yes I was! And to the kind of man he is, he came to see ME play! He was doing a clinic in my city at a friend’s drum shop. On the night of the clinic, my daughter was having her first ever band concert, then I had to run to a gig after that. So I couldn’t make the clinic. My buddy told Mr Purdy what a fan I was and why I couldn’t be there, so he had my buddy drive him to see me play for a bit and say hi on the way back to his hotel! I had no idea this was happening and I was shaking like crazy when I saw him there!

Simply awesome to hear this breakdown! I think of the experience and feel Purdie brought to the table, amazing. People bust on Steely Dan about studio vs. live but in the end they created mainstream music using rhythm and jazz with blues and rock blended in to create incredible songs that intrigue us to this day. I love hearing from these master studio musicians.

I think he started out as a New Orleans drummer.
@Baribrotzer4 ай бұрын
@@liamfitzdrums According to Wikipedia, he never lived there - born in Maryland, built his career in NYC, lived in NJ for years, now lives in NC. He took lessons from Leonard Heywood, an old jazz drummer, though, and I'm not sure where Heywood was from.
@liamfitzdrums4 ай бұрын
@@Baribrotzer Ah. Leonard Heywood probably taught him a bit of New Orleans style of playing. Or maybe Bernard met a few New Orleans drummers while touring the US and learned from them.

What's a "blues percussionist"?
@damiandominguez27494 ай бұрын
@stephanleo Hey there! A percussionist is anyone who plays percussion instruments, like the drums. I guess I used that word to hedge my bets in case he's played any other percussion instrument - but his whole career has been on a drum set, so I could've just referred to him as a drummer.

He never played on Beatles song. That's an absolute lie.

@@MrFchank 💯. MAAAAYYYBE the one time, as an overdub on that one song for a few bars that Quincy was going off about. But people have looked into the timelines of his claims, and they just don’t fit. Plus, we all know what Ringo sounds like. Now in this video, he’s claiming that song was “Steely Dan’s biggest song ever!!” Very, very far from it. He is a great drummer (and decent singer!), with plenty of real accomplishments. I don’t know why he had to tell such crazy stories.

You need to catch the twinkle in his eye when he tells those stories. His eyes always let on to when he’s telling you what went down Vs yanking your chain.
@jukesjointOG4 ай бұрын
@@Gk2003m Well, there was no “twinkle” in print to catch when he said that in Modern Drummer years ago, or any of the other places that story was printed. I think you are giving him far too much latitude.
