WHAT IS CANINE GENETIC TESTING?
Canines of all breeds have genetics that we can test for abnormalities and things you may not want to pass on to your puppies. No matter if you have Labs, Goldens German Shepard's or Bernese Mountain Dogs like I do, canine genetic testing is important.
For an example: I test my Bernese Mountain Dogs for degenerative myelopathy both SOD1A and SOD1B to ensure a healthy puppy.
I also test for Von Willebrand's disease type one as a Bernese standard test.
Your breed may very. So make sure to check out the "Tests By Breed" section on their homepage to make sure what you need to be testing for.

Gary Rees Hi Gary! Great question. So to the best of my knowledge genetics and DNA does not change, so GenSol, the lab that does all of my genetic testing have never prevented me from testing a puppy or an adult dog. Now hips and elbows, yes age is a big deal. Yet with genetics I don't see why you cannot test a puppy! Thank you again for asking! Chris

Thanks Chris, I'm wanting to start breeding B. M. D. (But this could apply to any breed.) I would think this would be helpful in getting started with good dogs to started with. If they test out OK you keep the pup. The test would be done and your not out any money because (I) would have tested them anyway. If not, (since most breeders give you a guarantee) you could send it back get your money back and look for a better dog. I know this will add more to your start up cost. If you wait and test later your stuck with a dog you don't want to use. You would only have to do this for your starting foundation. I,m sure this would not set well with the breeder. But this would be MY foundation stock and my money. I would think any one getting started would want to start out with the best dogs you could find. Any thoughts? Gary
