In 1993 as a 12-year old I wrote a letter to Mr. Eccelstone regarding the Australian GP moving from my home town of Adelaide to Melbourne, amid much conjecture. He personally replied to my letter with the upmost clarity and respect. The fact he gave time to fans while driving a now Billion dollar business is very admirable, If he only knew it was a pivotal point of my life that steered me toward being a Journalist, great interview TC. Smart, tough, devious, astute, clever, wheeling, strategic and wise - though many of those qualities have made Bernie enemies (fans and professionals alike) but he has also made others very happy, like me. So many people judge Bernie based on things he said, but the point is that’s irrelevant as he never believed a thing he put out into public, it was all a device to achieve something. The 'off track' side of F1 is not nearly as interesting without Bernie and Max stirring things up, I'm sure it was intentional because I remember the intrigue and machinations BETWEEN races had everyone talking and debating, and was almost as exciting as the race weekend, whereas now even the liveliest of F1 forums have very little to say between races. Not saying that's a bad thing - just less exciting.

Jochen Rhindt, was due to go into business with Bernie, and they were going to do F2. Then move into F1, and he was going to retire after winning the F1 title. His wife said that he would be F1, but there be nothing more to do as a driver F1. And for the sake of their marriage he would retire. But due to the slower speed of the lotus 72, they removed the rear wing and he didn't like the crotch strap on the harness in the cars. So never used and unfortunately what they 'submarined' in his 4 point harness and later died on the way to hospital. Jackie Ickx was unwillinnaa to win the title after Jochen was killed in practice, so ppurposedly didn't drive at his full potential.
