While the top marginal taxrate is 59% the minimum taxrate is only 42%, so your wage have to be quite good for you to pay the top marginal taxrate. And that economist you was interviewing is known as a very rightwing person here in Denmark. @KARL KFOURY @KARL KFOURY i understand this perfectly clear. yes, Bezos's wealth is generated, but not by him. You can give that credit to his workers. They are the ones which labor time builds the backbone of his company, without them, he wouldn't have a business. And yet, they receive a fracture of the wealth they produce. Did you know that it would take a low wage amazon worker 8 weeks to earn what Jeff Bezos earns in a second? Amazon workers receive poor wages and unsafe working conditions and have no say over how the wealth they produce is spent. It's not all his Bezos, he didn't create the wealth all by himself. His workers played a part in it as well. They are forced to sell their labor time for a business owner that reaps most of the benefits. Low wages have largely been stagnant since the mid-1940s and yet billionaires are increasing their wealth by 50 trillion dollars over this period. This money would have gone right into the wages of the middle and working-class if the redistribution would have been consistent with the economic growth. Billionaires quite literally took 50 trillion dollars from the working class over the past 8 decades. Billionaires reap most of the wealth while a large majority suffers the consequences of poverty, bad housing, food insecurity, and lack of healthcare.

Just so people know: That economist CNN was talking to, is substantively to the right of the mainstream economists in Denmark. But that is typical CNN I guess. They can't wait to get extremely biased people and present them as experts on air. Also, as you find out, the minimum wage thing is a stupid point, because we have a de facto minimum wage of $16.3 enforced by the unions. I don't know any thing Bernie Sanders has proposed that would be dismissed by Danish politicians (most of it is law already) - With the possible exception of breaking up the big banks, - but then again we don't have banks nearly as big as US have them in absolute terms. *I* certainly agree that the American megabanks has got to be broken up for the sake of the world economy. And fast

+BarrySlisk First of all. The lowest a person can earn in Denmark is 686 kr per day. Thats 102,3 dollar a day, 3060 dollars a month, 36720 dollars a year. This is if you havent got a job. These pesons also pay the minimum tax rate of 42%. After tax any danish citizen will earn at least 15422,4 dollars a year. And these are the poorest in the country (not concitering homeless, they have chosen not to benifit of these rights). AND YES the middle class benifits of our system. They dont have to get health insurance, nor take student loans nor fearing loosing their jobs. And maybe the 1% dont benifit of this. But 59% of a multi-billion cooperation. That is nothing comarad to the lower/middleclass.

Okay CNN. You go all the way to my country, Denmark and then choose to listen to some extreme liberal from the Danish economist who are opposed to taxes and use him as an example of what Danes think about the society and taxes -,- How biased. Fact is 90% of the population of Denmark agrees that the Danish model works and that they wouldn't want to chance it. If president Barrack Obama was living in Denmark he would be a rightist and in the opposition to the socialists. And if the assumption from Lars Christensen was correct, about the taxes hindering growth, then standard of living for all should be much higher in the US than it is in Denmark - fact of the matter is though that this is not the case. Financial growth is steady and stable.

The truth about the "welfare state". Around 1960 the government decided to created the Danish "welfare state" (yes, the one that Bernie Sanders is always referring to): more public services, more public economic support and so on. The result of this policy was, that mothers started to participate on the working market in increasing numbers. It was justified as giving them "equality" with men, because now they got an income. Soon it moved on to a demand, that there should be "equally" many men and women in any sphere of work. Naturally, it never happened. When the women got a massive majority in Academics, the status from such education fell below the floor - and there were almost no men around anymore. They had moved on. But the important consequence was not for the mothers or the women in general but for the kids. Kids now had to be put in institutions or were left by themselves all day long. In both cases they felt deserted (you can not get your voice heard with 30-50 competitors around, so you tend to get narcissistic and make as much noise as possible in order to get attention - or you give up completely. And if there is no adult around you have to adapt to the law of the street). Final result: you got a generation of people without any social empathy for others. From there the road to broken families (single mothers), abortions (890.000 during 50 years in Denmark with 5 million inhabitants, more than 15% of the entire population) alcohol- and drug problems, crime, gang crime, and so on was open. Denmark has HUGE social problems, that you never hear about. About 20% of the entire population lives on state subsidiaries, many of them in personal isolation and most of them in fear and misery. In short: the Danish welfare state turned out to be a nightmare! I am convinced, that if you look at US development, you will find a similar development.

Okay, but we don't pay half our taxes for this only. Also consider that we have this: - If you become unable to work for an amount of time. You can stay home and still be paid for 100% of the work you'd do. - If you become mentally ill, you can get free doctor visits and you will still get money, even though you aren't even working. But as long you are working towards becoming happy again (like going to the psychologist and all) you will get paid. For doing no work. - If you lose your job. You still get money from the government. You will have to try and get a new job but as long you are trying, you will get paid. - You get money each month if you have kids. More if you have extra. (idk if this is a thing in the US). - When you are pregnant and at home, you are still paid 100% and your time home is longer than in the US. - You're paid during holidays. These are all brilliant things because you never know when you'll need a surgery. You never know if you'll become depressed or worse. You never know if you'll lose your job. Etc and you are basically secured no matter what. Sure, there's still flaws in the system, but you are roughly said, secured in Denmark, no matter what happens.

I don't know why they keep praising the Danish model. There isn't really that big a difference on most Western European countries. To me, the U.S. is living in the past, not carrying the slightest for each other. In Denmark, poverty is more or less unknown, noone have to be criminal to survive. Is that such a bad thing? And yeah, we have free education, meaning rich and poor can get an education of the highest level. That means the most clever people get the highest education, not the richest ones. And our free education is not only for the Danes, it's for all E.U citicents. In my city, allmost haft the students are from Spain and other European countries. We benefit from that, the way that many of them stays in the country. Clever people! Personally, I believe we pay to much in taxes. We try to help to many, it's to easy not to have to benefit to the society an just live on welfare. But You know what? We voted for this system, all of us and if we don't like it, we can just move to another E.U. country!

What is missed out here is that the Danes are consistently rated the happiest people in the world, they don't worry about education or health bills and getting affordable daycare so you can have a family and still work is a bonus. Christenson falls into the camp of greed and selfishness. Personally If I was wealthy I would rather live in a country without homeless everywhere, children living in cars and sick people carrying diseases not being treated, I would rather live in a country were my fellow citizens have a fair standard of living as well.

Then I can tell them, that's MORE than enough, to own a nice house, a nice car and eat good food. Meanwhile sending my kids to school, gettin free healthcare, decent/good infrastructure etc. etc. Would you rather pay 200$ health insurance, or 150$ more in tax for FREE healthcare for you, your children, your grandmother, your neighbour etc! +NatralSelection The Danes knows it's not free, they know when the get a "free" education they pay it off for the rest of for the rest of our life. The same goes for healthcare, you pay a high amount even when you are not sick, and even if you never get sick. But you know that you won't have to leave your home if you do become sick. it's all a priority, the question is what is the outcome? Denmark is better off if you look at national depth compared to GDP, and we are happier, more free and we have a higher social mobility. I would prefer the UK system as we have arguably the best balance between socialism and capitalism. I have lived in Norway for seven years and although emergency healthcare is free, that does not apply to appointments with doctors and psychologists, in this case you might as well stay in the U.S. Here in the UK on the other hand the healthcare system is completely free which includes not only doctors, but also dentists and psychologists. I think that really Bernie wants to follow the UK system. Here in the UK we have to pay for college tuition as opposed to the Scandinavian countries, however we get a student loan which covers all the expenses so that after college we do not get forced to pay it back until we have an income high enough to do so. This is good because I don't think it's fair that other people are paying for you to get a better job than them in the future, at the same time you don't have to stress about repaying the debt.
@tomrasmussen44618 жыл бұрын
On the other side you could say that if people have been geting a good education and then get a good (well payed) job. Then they automaticly pays back anyhow. The more you earn, the more you pay in tax, most people that has been given a long education also gets to meke pretty good money at some point... The danish or scandinavian system isent perfect, but defently better than in the UK. At least i thinks so, and do beliave that facts are backing me up in that opinion...

Scandinavian countries aren't socialist (remember, the prime minister of Denmark had to correct Bernie on this). They have no minimum wage laws, until Trump came along they had lower corporate income tax rates, they have a less progressive tax code (e.g., higher taxes overall, not just for "the very wealthy" - at about $50,000 you're paying at least 50% in taxes), a 25% VAT tax on goods which hits the poor harder than the rich, no financial transaction fees like the ones Bernie proposes, no wealth taxes (especially since it failed in Sweden), no UBI (especially since it failed in Finland), no estate taxes. In other words, they're not down with Bernie's ideas of punishing the successful because they know these are the ones creating wealth. Not just for themselves, but for the country. Also, are there are any Scandinavian politicians who've gone from zero to 100 million on a government salary? I can't find one. But we have plenty of examples in the U.S... and Venezuela...

Some thing about Nordic countries is hard to parse for an American audience. E.g. some economic policies are much more liberal than the US, e.g. the lack of a minimum wage. But that doesn't really mean the government doesn't care about minimum wage, it is just that Nordic countries decided to solve the problem of maintaining a high minimum wage in an entirely different way. The Nordic way is to pass laws and regulations which make strong labour unions. Thus the government has left it to unions to negotiate minimum wages. This is considered more flexible as it allows different minimum wages for different industries and it allows the wages to increase or stay moderate when needed according to economic development rather than waiting for congress to pass some law on minimum wage. This strategy however is not an option in the US, because unionization rate is very low and unions are very weak in the US. So Bernie Sanders pushing higher minimum wage is really just band aid, because what the US really needs to is rebuild its unions. I think what went from in the US with unions is four things: 1) The union system was made adversarial rather than cooperative as in Nordic countries and Germany. Unions in Germanic countries are usually on company boards and plan the company future together with the company. They have thus a lot more power but the system is also designed to encourage cooperation. 2) The US has too many anti-union laws or rather don't really enforce the laws they have making it easy for companies to destroy unions. 3) Not making union membership a choice was a BIG mistake. It made the attitudes towards unions negative. In Nordic countries union membership has always been a free choice but to help unions the law requires companies to make tariff agreements with unions once they reach a certain percentage of the workforce. That means unions don't need to make everybody a member to get some influence. 4) The mob influence. The mob seems to have both corrupted unions and destroyed them by being hired to murder and intimidate union bosses. Thankfully we never had such brutal history in Nordic countries.

This most likely benefits you because rich people are paying for your services.
