I'll tell you what.... Back in 2016, Bernie made 3 stops in our very large state (New Mexico). He had a big rally / meeting in Santa Fe, and again the next day, in Albuquerque... and then we got this emergency notice from the campaign, that he would be having one more big rally, in a little town, South of Los Cruces, and West of Hell Paso. 🙂... called Vado. It was a poor, unincorporated "Colonia" small town... with a GREAT BIG high school, and excellently large athletic field... 🙂 Overnight, over 6,000 people showed up, and Bernie spoke SO Magnificently... about the America... I THOUGHT I was protecting, when I went into the Navy, during Vietnam. 8 years later, I still find it VERY difficult to stomach the DNC, as a corporation, themselves. I believe they have a TOTALLY NASTY Habit, of subtly " or openly, interfering, with the variety of candidates who were "allowed" to participate, in the so-called "open debates". Every candidate who managed to get onto several state ballots, (but didn't meet certain OTHER requisites), were not allowed. Mostly, the publicly-funded candidates, who refused to take any corporate money.... , were the ones who were singled-out. It was disgraceful. For once, and For ALL, we must create a new bureau, called the ELECTIONS BUREAU (staffed by civilians, who have been thoroughly-vetted, to be free from all corporate AND party influence (all parties)... This group of people, would administrate helping ALL candidates, who were running for Federal offices. What they would be administrating, is nothing less than the FIRST, Publicly-Funded System of Elections,, (with NO outside money allowed... (under penalty of disqualification from the race. REAL TEETH !)

I also think we should talk about the bigger result of higher wages. GDP measures economic output under ideal conditions and is also very theoretical, it is what an economy could make rather than what it does make. I think median wage is a better economic indicator, it dictates what people can buy and it also indicates economic resilience. In WW2 median wage was used to determine how much pressure an economy could take and from the disaster of Covid it's clear just how fragile the US economy is. A higher median wage not only gives a higher living standard but also is a buffer to economic shock.

@@hughquigley5337 It also makes sense if you give it some thought. If people have more money saved up they can afford to lose some of it. Also if they have a high living standard they can and usually are also willing to temporarily lower it. In the late 1930's Germany had the highest median wage in the world with the US close behind and overtaking it during the war. This high median wage showed during the war as German industry kept functioning despite the bombing. It might be hard to believe but Germany actually exited the war with more industrial capacity than it started with. Though the industries of the US, UK and USSR had expanded far more so they were much further behind than at the start of the war.

What happened? The United States took a right wing political turn in the 1970s that moved the nation away from social democracy and progress. In that time, automation was one tool used by employers against workers to deal with economic issues. The consequence is that we are living through another gilded age period of history that has delivered Post-Fordist capitalism.
