Certainly one of the most virtuosic of sculptors, if not indeed the single most virtuosic. His ability to render marble into a variety of apparent textures, as addressed here, is amazing.

What a wonderful piece of art. Just thinking about all the nuances if it puts me in awe! And as usual, Dr. Harris and Dr. Zucker infuse so much emotion and serenity into the descriptions with their soothing voices. This is a true feat for any art lover; great subjects, great commentary, and flawless execution❤

Wow Bernini was a master. I can look at this piece all day, all the elements from painting sculpture to architecture create more than an optical illusion but evoke as well a feeling of aspiration. I love art pre the reformation but this baroque style post the reformation is simply spectacular. God Bless ♥️

I was raving to someone special last night about Smarthistory and how much I've learned here, which turned into a discussion of the Baroque (with emphasis on Caravaggio and Bernini). We had a good laugh when I shared about his version of David, so this is great to see today. And it started off with a bang! His self-portrait was great, but I was floored by that first view of The Ecstasy, then again by Santa Maria. He really was incredibly talented. I love the idea of bel composto - there really is something special about different forms of beauty in a comprehensive work. The reading was powerful... She did a great job describing her experience, yet it felt beyond comprehension... I'm reminded of how beautiful and transcendent having an intimate, devoted relationship with the Lord can be - very timely for today, post-church.

There should be a giant block of marble next to it to remind people that it's actually stone. Maybe a hammer and chisel with a sign that says "here, YOU try..."

I really wish there would be more to read on the internet about the stained glass window above the sculpture. I cannot for the life of me figure out why a chid is depicted in it, unless it was a slight against her from the church (which might be likely due to her circumstanses).

Yes. This is our third video about this work. We made the last one ten years ago and well, KZbin now allows 4k; ten years ago 720p was the best resolution possible.

You should do one about Bernini’s Beata Ludovica Albertoni in San Francesco a Ripa church in Rome. The staging is not good as St. Teresa, but the touches are impressive
