I TOTALLY AGREE! The EWI Solo is a performer's joy! I have been playing wind controllers for 25 years - Akai Ewi's for the past 8 years. It took about 2 weeks for this incarnation to become my main and preferred performance instrument. The voices are quite great. The setup is so easy! I recently played some duets at church with a trumpet player. The church pianist was in the other room and was unable to tell who was playing which part because the voices matched so well! The 'favorites banks', are a fantastic improvement for quickly switching instruments. I set up a saxes bank - Jazz Clarinet, Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax for quick access to my jazz reeds.

Sorry I missed you live, Bernie -- but just watched your EWISOLO stream and want to thank you for presenting the instrument in such a positive and informative way. Comparing it to the 5000 (which I have) helped differentiate the two as I'm not as much a fan of the 5000 -- even with your collection of Bernzilla settings (which helped quite a bit). Very glad to know you like the SOLO sounds a bit better out of the box. Love your wonderful fluidity on that thing. I look forward to hearing you play on your next live stream.

Thanks for being a blessing. Totally enjoyed your presentation for this wonderful instrument. I'm going to be purchasing one to return to my sax playing. Have been shopping around and watching various reviews for about 2 months (Akai/Roland/Yamaha) and this Akai Solo seems to be the standout item for me to choose. Fantastic presentation! I am going to have to get the EWI SOLO. I am learning flute and I'm having to be careful when I practice, I live in a condo with thin walls. I also play clarinet, bass and keyboard. I use headphones for the bass and keyboard at night but I want to be able to play the wind instruments whenever the mood strikes! The SOLO could be just the answer AND it is very cool in and of itself. Your vid here has dispelled all my concerns about getting into ewi (and this one in particular). Thanks, peace. I have only gotten about half through your video, but it's great. I just got my Solo about an hour ago, unpacked, put charging cord on, played around a bit. It is easier to use the octave rollers than I initially thought...it will take practice to get smooth, but it is simpler.

Perfect commentary about the fingering at the end. After you experience the freedom of the EWI fingering (adding and removing semitones at whim) you cannot go back.

I tried that prior but when you try to over right a sound it just adds the new sound without deleting the one you are trying to replace. Between the Solo and the Aerophone it will be a great winter.

Well I’m late to the party but I gotta say, this livestream allowed me to learn enough about the Solo to be able to jump in and just start playing it when it arrived. I figured I’d need a week to learn it but nope, one day in and comfortably producing studio quality music with it.

Hi Bernie, please guide me how can I connect the wireless unit of my EWI 5000 with my PC through the sound card? I have Behringer U Phoria UMC - 22 sound card having two outputs connected to the speakers. The Sound card has one XLR input for mic & one 6.35 mm jack for instrument sound signals

Hi Bernie, do you still prefer to use the EWI fingering as apposed to using the sax, oboe, flute fingerings? In your comments pre-ewisolo you said you didn't feel these were a necessity in the instruments design. Also, did you use the upper keys as particular way to change from one instrument to another?

Yes I prefer the EWI standard fingerings! They are the best and most versatile. All others are limiting. I just use the Hold and Interval buttons in the side to change presets.

On the bagpipes patch, I noticed when I hit the "note latch" key, it changes my patch. Did I change something to make it a patch changer and not a "latch key" any more? Just curious as I find the bag pipes with the note latch to be a "bit". lol

Hi Greg: you have to be sure your out of Prog or Fav mode to use the Hold or Interval key functions. After you select the Bagpipes preset tap the Prog button. You might have to tap it twice. You will know when Hold key is working because it will turn red.

Do you have any experience with the Yamaha UD-BT01 Wireless MIDI Adapter? I can get it to work with the Solo but I am just a hobbyist. I am happy to get MIDI messages to show up. I am curious to know if there are drawbacks to using it in a musical/studio setting? I tried using the MD-BT01 to load patches into the EWI 4000 with not the greatest results so I am suspicious. I have the Puc+ but I am trying to see if there are off the shelf options for making the Solo do wireless MIDI. Your iEWI solutions should work with the EWI Solo, correct?

No but I've used the MD-BT01 with my EWI5000. I plan on using my Puc+ with EWISOLO when needed. Yes my Instant EWIs work with the EWISOLO.

Great video. What settings did you use to get the chords at the beginnig of your demo?

I’m using preset #147 “Fifths Saws” which sounds two notes a perfect fifth apart. Then I use the Interval Button (bottom clear key on the side) set to ‘Real-time Interval’ to establish a four note parallel chord. I play a G (sounds a G & D) and will still blowing tap the Interval key and finger a F a flat 7th interval above the G. Now when I play a G it stacks a G D F C, which gives a nice open sounding G7sus in root position or a Dminor11 (D-/G). Then it moves by parallel chords as you play various notes. Also try intervals of a minor6th, major 6th and major 9th. I like to start with a G to set it up because it’s easier to press the Interval Button with my right hand middle or index finger. Experiment, have fun and be musical!

Since your session I set up 16 Favorites BUT when I play a Sound from my Favorites the Interval (octave) side button does Not work- It just changes tones above?? Any Help? The More I play it the more I love it and I had no experience with the EWI, Just 2 casio horns and the Aerophone ae-10 which I will always love.

I'm Stuck!!! Would like to organize my Favorites by deleting a couple from each folder so as to organize them in styles. Only way I can think is to Factory Reset and input your settings again.

You can just select the preset in Fav bank you want to over right with the new one you want to save. No need to do a Factory reset.

There's quite a few janky sounds on the solo, but it still impresses the everyman consistently... and that's even with the janky sounds. It's a very joyful instrument. Not perfect, but wayyyy more fun than some people want to paint it. Perhaps they all have NuRads and thus have to blast everything else. (Not saying the nurad is bad, I'd enjoy one... but you know? Why extoll the virtues of your solo when you have a nurad? )
