The Schumann 2 is an astonishingly beautiful, often wrenching work. It is great to hear LB champion it in this way, at the level of orchestration, which is the source of its impact even if the average listener like myself did not realize it.

I am in total agreement with Leonard Bernstein's thoughtful analysis of Robert Schuman's glorious Symphony No. 2. This work captured me from my very first hearing - especially the 3rd movement - "An adagio of such lyrical intensity, it stands alone among slow movements of its time". Thank you, Maestro Bernstein, for further enhancing my appreciation of this fine orchestral work and shellac1925 for posting it for everyone to enjoy!

A landmark, Bernstein defending Schumann as orchestrator!

I'm surprised he thought so well of Schumann's orchestration but didn't think much of Beethoven's. I would have loved for him to have analyzed Beethoven's orchestration the same way.

Almost Mahlerian at points in terms of intricacy and complexity.
