Thanks for the upload. 1990, the year both Bernstein and Copland passed away. Personally I like Bernstein setting a slower tempo - very majestic and powerful. One of the greatest American symphonies, in my opinion - if not the greatest, in the hands of the right conductor. Very difficult to get right. Actually a symphony quite different from the other symphonies written during that time, Diamond, Barber, Harris, W. Schumann, etc. (all more "classical symphonic") - and to my knowledge the only symphony that seems to have survived and is getting performed and recorded frequently these days all over the world. With his 3rd. symphony Copland somehow succeeds to embrace and explain what USA stands for in an ideal world. Majestic, powerful, sensitive, lively, introvert....human.

Copeland's 3rd symphony is one of the greatest symphonies that is I the same pantheon of the Shostakovich 5th, Tchaikovsky 6th, Beethoven's 3, 5, 7, and 9th, and Mahler's 2, 5, and 8th.

😲 I so wanted to be at this concert but my husband would not go. Recently found out that a dear friend I have traveled with drove by herself at about age 50. Guess this is when we find out what counts and do it.
