I think imo your legato lesson series would be perfect if you explain and demo to students about what is 'half-roll' and 'full-roll' legato.. so they would know/understand the technique alot better. Just my suggestion/opinion. Anyway great legato lesson though! Thanks Bernth!😎😊🎸🤘🤘🤘Hails and salutes from Singapore!

Pre disclaimer- been playing for 17 years , I’m currently 28 , but always self taught, many of this “techniques” I notice that I’ve been sort of applying and or developing them instinctively in some sort of way here and there , when composing solos or learning covers. Even tho I have never studied guitar in the way of : doing exercises. I do have been playing around 4 hours a day for the last 17 years And up to 7 hours a day on gigs season , wich here in Spain is from June to October. My progres here was: 1st day: up to 100bpm 2nd day: same 3rd day: 110bpm 4th and 5th day also 110 6th day a solid 120 7th day , surprisingly 130 8th ,9th,10th day stuck at 130 too 11th day , a quite chunky 140 12th day a clean 140 Stayed there for 6 more days trying to jump to 150 18th day , a very dirty , but all the notes played 150 19th day similar 20th day very acceptable 150 21th day same 22th clean 150 6 days trying it on 5 different scales at 130 And rehearsing this same one at 150 Day 28 , i can play 6 different scales at 140 and this one at 150 , all across the guitar. Day 29 same Day 30 got the other ones up to 150 , but a few of them need some cleaning up. Day 31 just a little improvement Day 32 got them all clean Day 33 trying to use this techinique improvising over backing tracks , while recording me. Ray 34: it’s amazing to hear the recordings and think it is me , but they need cleansing up. Using it with taste is very different from scale up scale down 35,36,37 similar. Day 38. I’m playing some pretty fast 150bpm legato solos while improvising , and it sounds clean , precise and smooth. I’ll keep practicing, but I consider skill aquired. -to all the guitarist out there , that have been playing for many years , self taught , and get depressed with , all this children , playing this techniques , like fats legato , sweep picking, hybrid picking , and make you think “you wasted so much time being lazy not practicing “ Not true , you have spent thousands of hours learning how to write tasteful music in the guitar , finding your sound , gaining experience , learning to play with other musicians , acquiring taste. But also developing a lot of strength in your hands , after so many years of playing. It took me a bit over. A month to learn how to play legato at 150bpm (because it’s doubled , the real speed you are playing blacks at is 300) Do you think a young guitar student , with 1 year of experience can achieve a 150bpm clean legato , in many different scales , all across the guitar neck , in just a little over a month? Nope , his fingers and his wrist will hurt after each 10 minutes of practice Go for it you older guitarists. They’ve got nothing on us!

Good statement, it is hard to find motivation when you've been self taught most of your life and get stuck at a certain point. I think Berth is a real good teacher when comes about breaking through this condition. I also tried this class and my results are very similar, i am not 100% satisfied with almost 200bpm playing triplets (wich is the fastest i can go playing almost full clear with high distortion when im completely warmed up. I am not capable of just grabbing the guitar and hitting this speed), but this improved hugely my left hand motion. Consistency is everything even if you can practice only 1 or 2 hours daily. Do it with honesty and dedication and we'll get there :)

Really appreciate this comment. I’m self-taught and playing on/off (mostly on) for 20 years. Never learned to shred, still play pretty slow, and only recently decided to give in and start working on speed drills with a metronome. Eager to give this a go and see how many of my wasted years will actually pay off 😀

Wow. The empathy and perspective in that statement really triggered me in a good way. So many online "teachers" make it seem like you wasted your entire life not following their structured courses while in reality, you've been developing your skills every time you picked up the guitar. Bernth's stuff helps take it to the next level and I love how Bernth also showed himself applying more and more structure over the years. It's the reality of how you develop yourself over time. You wouldn't even be doing this exercise if you hadn't played quite a bit already.

Love this workout!! I've spent a lot of time with it. Here's something that really helped me: if you're stuck for a while at a certain level, it's probably the pull-offs. In this workout, you exercise hammer-ons and pull-offs equally, but most people find the pull-offs harder and more difficult to speed up. If that's you (it was me), then you might want to dedicate more practice time to just the pull-offs. Try this: set a metronome to just below the speed you are stuck at, and *only* practice the pull-off run from the exercise, over and over. Do this for five minutes, gradually pushing the speed up. Then come back to the video. Doing this really helped me break through plateaus.

I want to share my journey here, and i'll update it until im done, so i have this comment motivate me to keep it up!. I'm a 19yo guitarist i started with acoustic at June 2020 and i've got an electric like 6 months ago, before that i had no experience with electric guitar techniques like bendings or legato, as the time passed i've learned a little legato by covering my favorite songs and writing my own. I pick up the guitar every single day and play from 2-6 hours a day, but i don't have any strict practice routine, so this is my journey on this challenge: Day 1: 60bpm (comfortably) Day 2: 80bpm doing pretty good, 90bpm pushing it (pattern 1) Day 3: 80bpm getting more comfortable with it, still barely get to 90bpm Day 4: 80bpm, same as day 3, keeping the practice Haven't got much practice time, still picked up the guitar daily and played, i got really happy seeing that now i can apply legato to my normal playing without an effort, something i couldn't do before attempting this workout. Currently focusing at the technique and to get every note to ring with clarity and presence rather than increasing speed, really getting my hand to play with a good technique before speeding it up, need to relax my fretting hand a bit more. Very happy with the results so far :) Day 11: 90bpm

Background: Intermediate player who started to really learn lead techniques about half a year ago. Have used some guitar solo parts as legato practise but haven't done it consistently Day 1: 40 bpm, a bit sloppy but the worst part is guitar noise. thought I was already rid of that! Day 2: 50 bpm with less noise :) Day 3: 50 bpm Day 4: 50 bpm Day 5: 50 bpm still but more smooth Day 6: 50 bpm again... anyway, I think doing this everyday helps to not use too much force. I see improvement in technique again and quite close to nailing the next level Day 21: 60 bpm Day 22: 70 bpm 😺 Day 23: 70 bpm &first part of the next level Day 24: 70 bpm Day 25: 70 bpm Day 26: 70 bpm Day 27: 70 bpm Day 28: 70 bpm. still trying to make this level sound clean. I don't even feel like pushing the speed today. I'll save my fingers for the last 2 days just in case Day 29: 80 bpm 😼 managed the next level after taking it easy for a day Day 30: 80 bpm After 30 days: I'm very glad with the results! Not fast yet but for me there was a lot of progress. This has improved my legato playing a lot and just fretting hand in general. Been playing this workout for about a year on and off and I just barely made it to 120 bpm, playing most of the notes consistently and evenly, although my triplet pull-offs could use some more clarity and the last triplet section is still a bit too fast for my fingers. I was playing this exercise daily for over 3 weeks and I was stuck at 100-110bpm. After not practicing this for a couple months and then coming back to it, to my surprise, I could actually get most of 120bpm to sound clean. Weird how that works when you put something down for awhile then come back to it later your mind has a different perspective. Thank you for all that you do Bernth!

30bpm is all I can muster right now, and I'm not content with the sustain/clarity of my notes as I descend the scale. I need to work on ensuring I have the upcoming note fretted before pulling off the prior one. Good drill! I'll keep with this and see if it improves over a week.

@louiscyfer69442 жыл бұрын
if you are stuck at 30, that means you have major issues with economy of movement, so you need other exercises first. this is why you need a teacher. bernth can't analyze your playing and give you the right stuff to correct your issues. get a teacher. once you get to a certain level, you can start doing some things on your own.

Great video. If I start at 100 BLM I can make it through 120 but to play from 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 70, 80, 80, 100,110 and 120 I loose it physically. Obviously I need to adjust my technique to achieve zero tension (not 0 but as little unnecessary tension so that I can not turning it into a forearm muscular endurance workout. Obviously, the exercise should be performed free of a y lactic acid burn. Whenever I feel that when I am playing it's a signal that adjustments (physical as well as mental, emotional) must be made because something is causing tension whether it's structural or related to my minds inability to be still in a sort of meditation without losing some level of focus. Obviously I need some level of focus initially but ultimately I need to be capable of doing it precisely without any conscious thought. Whenever thinking enters the equation when I am improvising or simply playing a part, it is a sign that it is not yet so engrained neurologically that it plays all by itself . That's when I have the best performances and I wish I could always be in that flow state but I am making it a priority to play without undue self consciousness or better yet without thoughts of self doubt or any what if I make A mistake entering my head. Every year it's easier, but then there's always a new challenge. The cool thing is even if the new skill is unrelated to things that are still a work in progress, when I try anything that is totally unfamiliar like the Travis picking journey I started about a year ago, it seems to make challenging flat picking exercises much easier. I have no idea why.
