I love the metaphor of the sword being a representation of casca. His thoughts are talking about both his sword and casca. This metaphor was shown earlier on in the wounds chapters where guts falls asleep near casca and finds comfort like when he is sleeping with his sword. Also cascas whole arc was to be someone’s sword

First off, thank the manga gods that Puck is still alive. By his own admission, Berserk would be too depressing without him. Second, I think Guts is at a point where I think only Shierke may be able to help him. They have a great bond of friendship and I hope we get an extended scene with them. Lastly, I have to give continued props to Kouji Mori and the team at Studio Gaga. The artwork and paneling are getting better each chapter. Their confidence is growing and it's awesome to see.

This is ample time for individuation for Guts. He no longer has the crutch that’s stood with him for soo long. For me, the sword is what Guts uses to feel safe and decisive in this world despite all he goes through. But it becomes more of a cope as a way of dealing with his grief of losing his friends in the apocalypse. He copes with pain by holding tighter to things that can protect him, like his sword and even his armor. Now, the same sword that slew so many apostles couldn’t do anything to Griffith, the main cause of his grief. His sword is now just a sword and no longer something he can use to cope, and so he has to deal with his emotions with his friends and process them. Integrating his shadow and hopefully the berserker armor as a whole.

Couldn't agree more on the individuation. The sword is a representation of Guts' strength, his ability to effect the world around him. It's his safety blanket. As you said, the sword passed through Griffith. This scene is Guts' impotence. The visual metaphor has been obvious for a long ass time now. And this is absolutely a mirror to Griffith's low point after Guts broke his sword in their last confrontation as men. Seriously, how blatant can this metaphor be? He doesn't know what he is if he can't rely on his sword. And they absolutely must be building up to Guts being presented with an opportunity to summon the godhand. He needs to turn that down to finalise his individuation. To reconcile his shadow into his totality, move past the crutch of the Berserker armour and confront Griffith as an equal. If the idea of evil is what lies at the heart of men. The idea of good is that which allows men to rise above their base desires. Their will. That's the duality at the core of the story. An indomitable will is what allows someone to swim against the stream of causality. Guts has been towing the line between the beast of darkness and the unbreakable will that marks him as a struggler. For years at this point. It may be close to the point where these need to be reconciled, narratively speaking. I think this is what Geiseric failed to do. I think his will and his beast of darkness separated. One became Zodd, a slave to desire/causality. And his will became the Skull Knight. Trapped in an endless struggle with causality. Guts needs to reconcile his truth to avoid that fate. I don't know what this means for the Dragon Sword. Does it get left behind as he moves beyond it? Or does it change with him? Or is it still a vital piece of who he is? Hard to say.

i believe the reason puck and ivalera are okay is because of their deep connection with their respective companions. the elfhelm tree may have only gotten rid of anyone who had a deep connection with it, which does leave isma in a weird position but keep in mind this is just a personal theory. i think puck and ivalera are okay because they share more of a connection with guts and schierke than they do with the tree

Interesting you bring up Griffith's broken sword and how he spiraled downward after. In the case of Guts. Last time he broke his sword and needed a new one, Zodd gave him his in order to fight. Maybe that's gonna happen again. As for symbolism, the Dragonslayer has remained in one piece even after all the punishment it took from his many battles, and yet it never broke; It just fell down, just like Guts. So that means somehow, someone will make him stand up and struggle on with the Dragonslayer, stronger than before. And speaking of being in one piece, remember that one time Guts lamented that his most trusty sidearm fell so many apostles and clutched him through tough battles so many times, and yet it couldn't catch Casca falling, unlike when he used the same arm back in golden age to catch her? This sword fall might be a callback to a past chapter as well, though I'm unfortunately not recalling a specific Golden Age parallel to it. Edit: i remember now. I think Guts' first defeat in the hands of Griffith would be it, and then Casca sleeps with him nekkid. Though that means she'd have to face her own problems first before she can even approach Guts to do that.

the breaking of Guts here is necessary... and I always thought he would finally break before he overcame himself. Guts has from the start been pushed to do better than Skull Daddy, who when he broke gave into the armor and let it claim him... from rock bottom, one can only go up... but Guts has always shown himself to be the most noble of all those around him in character, and behavior. it's the source of his charisma, and why people follow him. now, the Beherit I think will play a role, but having always been a better man than Griffith, I believe he will refuse the sacrifice, and will simply stand on his own two feet as he always has. simply put, from rock bottom, one can only go up, now contrary to what everyone thought before... now, and only now has he hit rock bottom. which is where he needs to be, to be without hope, and to make a few bad rash calls... only on that path can he become the Guts he was the day he returned to the Band a year later to mount the rescue of Griffith.... a more enlightened to himself Guts, a Guts that would be able to conquer the armor. the Mad Dog with focus and intent, not blind rage.

Guts in his even in his darkest moments always had his sword, no matter what happened even when everything in his life was taken from him he was able to fall back on his own strength and his sword, but in the most critical moment it was absolutely useless. All of Guts' combat prowess, the insane power of the Dragonslayer, it meant literally nothing and he was totally helpless to stop the most important person in his life from being taken from him by the same guy that fucked it all up to begin with. Guts has always pushed through everything in his path both mentally and physically by either reminding himself of Casca or the strength of his sword, now one is gone and the other failed him in the worst possible moment, it truly doesn't get a whole lot worse than this.

Wow this Elfhelm arc ends in a depressing atmosphere and a cliffhanger. If Berserk 371 started with what ends this episode, it would be a few panels about Guts' inner thoughts. Regarding Guts' current mental state, I have the following anticipation on how the Black Swordsman's Party will go on.I think the current mental state of Guts is parallel to Griffith's mental state after he had been rescued as a crippled man, both having their own dreams/purposes of life collapsed. Then, something bad may happen to Guts: 1)As Guts is definitely in his lowest point right now, maybe the Belheit he is carrying would reappear and lure him to start the Eclipse to become apostle in order to regain enough power to confront Griffith, what is gonna happen will diverge into two directions: 1.1) The Belheit may take advantage of Guts' self-loathing behaviour and saying words like "You can't protect Casca because you are incapable of doing what you love", making him blaming himself that he is the root cause of what happened right now. Then, he may open the Eclipse to sacrifice the comrades to become apostle regardless of what Roderick and Schierke were shouting outside, which will be the main conflict of the next chapter 1.2)Guts still had the same inner conflict as 1.1), but this time Roderick and Schierke were able to reach him, telling him that how they were inspired by Guts and changed their own life forever due to Guts and now they would like to help him through the pain as well. In this way, Guts would for the first time show his vulnerable facade in front of his comrade, speak up and understand that he is not nothing without his sword. The journey until now has changed him as well, he still have his own nakamas. Even without his sword to hold on, he still has his nakamas by his side to trust and hold on, so that he doesn't need to take the burden and despair all alone(just like how Luffy encouraged Vivi to trust her nakamas). With the encouragement from teammates, Guts would be able to move on and get into the discussion on the team's future actions. 2) The belheit does not appear but instead the Beast of Darkness spoke to him, luring him to give in to sorrow and let it take over his body. He may first feel like he is too useless and think that this is all his fault, making him be taken over by the armour with a breakdown of Guts and go Berserk. Then, the team would find the Berserk Guts and try to calm him down, with Schierke and Farnese this time pull him out of the despair with the words similar to 1.2), so that Guts can finally win the inner conflict and get his own character development and move on. All in all, I hope the next episode can show more inner monologues of the main characters, for example Schierke and Roderick's desperate for reaching out to Guts while remembering the journey with Guts. This can refer to how One Piece potrayed the close connection between Strawhats and Luffy by using inner monologues to express how the strawhats were desperate to reach out to Luffy just after they read the news that Ace was dead in front of Luffy, because they were once helped and inspired by Luffy and now they would like to repay the kindness to him, to give him a shoulder to cry on when he is devastated from Ace's death. Even though "power of friendship" thing is a shonen element, it would be great and reasonable to be demonstrated in this occasion, or if the manga team decided to turn it back to grim and dark tonality, it would still be OK. I believe that Guts losing his will to move on is him reflecting on all his past traumas and their weight of pain and helplessness he felt through those hard times is hitting him. Also people always suggesting him using the Behelit should stop that ridiculous idea. He is a sacrifice so he can’t do that not to mention he isn’t in any despair but just sorrowful and in pain. Another thing missing is that him losing his power of his sword can be how he lost Casca as she was symbolized as being like his sword when they first made love and Guts reflects that him laying with Casca is the only time he was without his sword and he remembers him healing his wound on his nose as a kid next to his sword. Basically Schierke will probably get a closer look into Guts and how he feels for Casca and maybe she may use some magic to help him to gain some new ability to help him battle against Griffith wirh his sword. Also what happened to Azan??? I really wonder where he is at. I like his character and he is also a badass amongst the group. Also perhaps Morda will help Farnese and Schierke develop their magical abilities with her seniority and knowledge amongst the mages since she seems much smarter and creative than the others, being a rebel and all. Puck may help Isidro get over his funk since he oversees him and perhaps he will have him train with Serpico along the ride and Azan may show up again for that too. A lot can happen and there is more to the lore that will get deeper diving into. One last thing I really want to see: Rickert with Silat and the Kushan! They gotta create an armada to battle Falconia and their false utopia.

The sword is his purpose, BUT casca (his purpose) is literally gone again. After "getting to his goal". You're correct this IS another form of the the eclipse. Just perception over nothing. Guts cant get used to nothing, BUT feels like it when he (Guts' logic/ego) just goes "let me cope with existence by swinging my sword."

I feel as though Guts has never truly believed in himself. He never had a dream or a vision like Griffith. He always relied on his Sword and then on Casca. Griffith is almost the opposite. He knew he controlled the will of the band of the hawk (apart from Guts) Perhaps if Guts finally develops some self belief, and becomes a more complete person, maybe he will learn how to rival Griffith, without leaning on his sword or Casca

What if its the sword he sacrifices, and because of its astral properties, along with the berserker armor there is an affect on his transformation. He retains his will for revenger and gains the power to go against Griffith in exchange for his humanity. He becomes one of the monsters he raged against. Similiar to Zodd, his lust for battle vs Guts desire for revenge. The abyss envelops him andbhe becomes truly Berserk.

I can't feel nothing similar with Guts now and with Griffith back in the Golden Age arc, Griffith was destroyed but contrary to Guts now, I saw hate and anger in him, Guts doesn't seems to have those feelings now. Maybe it's because of the artwork, but I don't believe so. Moreover, Guts and Griffith are different type of animals, their reactions to that sort of defeat might be different as well. Did you not see chapter 366? Berserk or not guts physical attacks are not gonna harm femto at all unless he gains some type of astral power that can be strong enough for god hand slaying. My guess is some kind forbidden magic from the mages to power him up, skull night giving him ground breaking knowledge on a weakness or something, or him just using the behlit and being on the same level as the god hand because of the sheer amount of negative emotion/energy he has in him to transform into something terrifying.

@@piercenealy7490 that's true he does gain a lot in the armor activated but the power only serves to unleash all his inner violent emotions which makes him unable to feel pain nor fear also allowing him to use 100% of his bodies physical capabilities low also having the power to "stitch" up any damage. The armor doest give him a power up, it gives him no restraint. What we saw him do against apostles and monsters low in the activated armor was purely guts strength without the restraints that the mind puts on the body to keep it from destroying itself. so it would still be a stretch if guts in his activated armor could do anything significant to femto especially with his space/matter manipulation power, but like you said femto did think on guts beast of darkness which means it does raise some kind of concern for him to think of it. Who knows but I personally think Griffith probably thought the beast he saw in guts would be a threat to him if guts were to use his behlit and physically manifest the beast in apostle form because guts has SO MUCH negative emotion within him, his beast, that his apostle transformation would be enough to be on the same level as the godhand without a crimson behlit.

Honestly was hoping for it to be more sad, was hoping for puck to fade away as well and say one last emotional goodbye to guts to really drive home how helpless things are. There has been little explanation as to why our fairies are fine and dandy and why there is a blatant focus on his sword and drive to defeat Griffith over casca all together. I really hope they dont go the route of giving guts the egg boi, that will honestly ruin a lot for me because its so damn predictable.

The sword is not broken though, it's only fallen down, it can be picked back up again and so can he. So, I really don't believe he going to go down the same route as Griffith, maybe come kinda close though?

yeah, I believe your comment is spot on. The way Berserk is told, you can see clearly the opposite approach to similar problems with Griffith and Guts. From one hand Griffith chose the path of sacrificing his friends in order to keep his dream alive, on the other I think we're gonna see Guts being elevated again on his own feet thanks to his friends (not just Farnese but all of them), in a way is again his friends "sacrificing" for him to be able to keep going but the way is so, SO, different. Guts companions will do that at their free will not because Guts will sacrifice them to their deaths and of course in the final confrontation we will see how Guts's way is the right way of doing things and he will be victorious :) :) :)
