I totally get what you mean. But somehow I would have said the opposite. Golden Age feels like a dreamy and hazy time. Something made out of the very fabric of Memory. A feeling which Hirasawa's music convey perfectly. All the characters in the manga say it repeatedly. Sometimes, nothing of this feels real. Are they in a dream? And some of Miura's genius for me comes into the following paradox: it is when the Eclipse manifests itself, the most incredible, unnatural, inconceivable, unfathomable, moment, that everything becomes horrendously REAL. A brutal reality you can not escape. As if everything before was but the illusion of a spell, cast upon them by the succubus demon-to-be Griffith, to keep them going eagerly onto the altar of their own sacrifice.

Me in 2010 finding my dads novel Berserk 1 in the plastic bucket we had downstairs is something I will never forget. He got it in 1997 when he was just 16. I am now 19 and he is no longer here. Time is a crazy thing.

@@Salo1378 Which is why Griffith not only considered Guts his sole true friend, but the only person he could relate to/admire along the only criteria that mattered to him -- "the struggle," as the Skull Knight coined it. Guts was never captivated by Griffith's charisma, nor awestruck by his beauty, nor willing to part with his own path in order to follow Griffith down his, despite how undefined Guts' path was. And Griffith saw this from the moment they met. Even prior, when he witnessed a 15 year-old Guts refusing to shy away from single combat against the most dangerous man in a castle siege. For no better reason than because the man was "in the way" (interesting meaning). And the most poetic part is that Guts had nothing BUT his own wayward path to keep him moving forward. He owned no lands, held no titles, swore no oaths. He didn't even understand what he was truly fighting for. Yet he fought all the same, because it is what he had in life. I believe that is allegorical of every person's fundamental cause for being, at some time or other -- there are going to be points in your life where you have no friends, no family, no money, no plan. Seemingly very little to fight and live for. But you always have that choice to fight. "The struggle." And at times, that may be the only thing you have. And you have to embrace it, and let that choice to not be chained down by the world be your expression for living. For moving forward. Let the battlefield that is life be your spark in the darkness.

To be honest , I think the first season of the anime series did justice to the manga. The voice actors, the way that they draw the characters, giving to them so much deep and they just get out so well done. I will never forget the scene when they found Griffith on the dungeon. Was so incredibly shocking and sad, and the reaction of each character was portrayed so well. Impacted me more than the Eclipse scene. I don't know why, but that scene did it. And the soundtrack, event the intro song, fits so well. This anime just have a genius touch.

My uncle died a year ago and whenever I hear this song it reminds me of the time when I was a kid and he took me into nature and talked about all the bushes, trees and how nature takes care of itself. It was always something very special about him knowing just everything I asked him and he explained everything very detailed and passionate. Hearing this song is like standing for the last time next to him, talking for the last time while knowing that his transition to the other world is near. And it's OK. He was always a smart and proud man and even in his last minutes he didn't fear death.
