Berserk Games 1999 - 2017: A Short Comparison

Here I've compared the three previously released Berserk games in terms of gameplay and graphics in a short video. The games are:
1) Sword of the Berserk: Gut's Rage 1999
2) Berserk: Falcon of the Millenium Empire 2004
3) Berserk and the Band of the Hawk 2016/2017
It wasn't easy for me to get the old versions of the games. ersonally, I liked the second part (Falcon) the best. Its atmosphere is much darker than that of Band of the Hawk. If these titles were released with new graphics, many fans would be made happy.
If you don't know what Berserk is: Berserk is a fantasy medieval manga for adults that revolves around the terrible adventures of the mercenary Guts. Epic battles, an end-time mood and a ruthlessly depicted reality are characteristics of the series.

The PS2 game had some of the most satisfying dismemberments in any video game. The fact that non-boss enemies have different death animations for every angle of the sword's swings was insane.

Have to be careful with the settings the game demands software rendering for the FMV cutscenes it won't rerender those cutscenes in higher quality, however gameplay wise yeah go all out with the hardware rendering.

When people talk about who they'd want to make a Berserk game, the first dev team brought up is usually From Software. FromSoft's games are consistently excellent and they make my absolute favorite titles, but I don't think they'd be the best to make a Berserk game. If you compare typical Dark Souls style gameplay to the way Guts fights in Berserk there's a clear disparity right on the outset. By and large, Dark Souls is about timing and patience when it comes down to it. Every fight has the potential to end you in seconds and you are, for the most part, completely at the mercy of the flow of combat that your foes set for you. You are meant to be weak in comparison to your enemy, who controls the pace of the fight while you work around that, and through perseverance, come out on top. While Berserk does share some of those concepts, there are some key differences more often than not that would invalidate Dark Souls style combat. Guts is strong, very strong. While a small mob of enemies or a singular foe of above average strength would be a threat in Dark Souls, Guts (under normal circumstances) could plow through several enemies with ease and never really struggle in a one-on-one encounter unless it's against an apostle or large monster, which would probably classify as a boss fight. Whereas in Dark Souls you are almost always on a defensive, Guts is known for his ferocity in battle. Guts can control the tide of battles, something rare in Dark Souls. And in the case of boss fights, Guts, using his big brain fight IQ, can turn the tables in his favor in an instant. In Dark Souls it's mostly gradual, some boss fights don't even give you the option to parry/riposte. It's Berserk. Berserk. That's rage, aggression, fighting with bestial ferocity without caring at all for life and limb. That's not Dark Souls. In Dark Souls you don't want to get hit at all. It's discouraged. You die quick. You are fragile in those games. While Guts definitely isn't unstoppable or unkillable, he's definitely a tank. Not to mention the fact that FromSoft's Dark Souls titles are not particularly known for being games that tell you a story in a traditional manner. Gameplay-wise, I think a studio like Platinum games would be better. But there's an even better option. For a complete package? Ryu ga Gotoku studio. Their Fist of the North Star game is what sold me on that. Now, some of the sillier stuff that goes into their games would definitely be out of place in Berserk, but I'd be okay with it anyway because of how much charm it adds to their games. I think they could pull it off. They'd probably have the best execution in terms of story and their gameplay can definitely suit Berserk. Tl;dr Ryu ga Gotoku studio should make a Berserk game.

I disagree. You can easily build any fighting style in dark souls, tank included. Heavy armor, sword and long health bar will do the thing. Your charachter will still fly around after heavy and grab attacks of the bosses and some mobs, but this is what also happens with Guts quite often. Also it is not that Guts is just strong, his strength is very limited compared to apostles, but there's a skill forged in countless battles. He struggled a lot against Wyald in the golden age arc and after black swordsman arc such enemies became quite routine for him. That also applies for the dark souls. Experienced players could easily overpower any boss, making the fight look like a joke. Besides from software alreasy showed their capability of making games with excellent combat system that differs from dark souls and more straightforward storytelling by making sekiro.

Berserk 2016 had Hay Yo and also Ash Crow. But every Berserk game so far had an opening and a ending theme from Susumu Hirasawa, ''Forces II'' and ''Indra'' and also ''Sign'' and ''Sign II''. I think the reason we don't have those in the new game is, the new game is striclty related to the movie trilogy ( there are even cutscene 5 minutes long from the movie) and Susumu wasn't involved in the movie trilogy so...what a shame.

You do realize that in Season 2 of Berserk, theres a scene with Guts and Zodd re-meeting 1 another only to get involve in 1 of those "sayain-speed" sword battles....albeit he was barely keeping up. Needless to say, him swingin' that Demon Buster around at great speeds is no choir at all.

The problem with Berserk 2017 is that everything feels so Wightless, especially compared to the first two games, we're if you hit someone with your sword they would defy gravity and shoot three meters into the air, baring in mind that they don't even fly in the direction that the sword hit them, they all just fly upwards. I still like the game, it's just that it doesn't quite feel so full on, heavy and dangerous

That's because it's a Dinasty Warriors game first, a Berserk game second. By the way, the PS2 era Dinasty Warrior games were a thousand times better and weightier too compared to the newer ones. In the old ones killing a few hundred soldiers was quite an accomplishment, especially with the weaker characters (and there were significant differences between them!). Killing a thousand was the big achievement. Also in the old ones you felt a lot more like just a "super strong dude" on a battlefield. There were other units and other heroes on both sides doing their thing and battles would go on even if you didn't take part. In the new game you're pretty much the only character actually doing anything and you're a GOD.

The ps2 game was the best without a doubt. You could feel how heavy the sword is and you made dissmembered corpses fly around with every swing, Guts items were actually important too, not just a flashy special move, the bossfights were epic, and when you got the Berserker armor at the end... It was a true Berserk videogame.

PS 4 version by far is my favorite. Missions, massacres, strategy, leveling system, item equip, stat mod and cool graphics make for a more complete game than the other two. But the Dreamcast Berserk had a extremely good story line.

As much as I like dynasty warriors type hack and slashes and how they handle move sets for characters like guys, I feel that the ps2 game one just on the fact alone it incorporated in game cutscenes in a manner you could almost mistake them for qtes, they blend right in with the action, no short loading screen to show the cutscenes and break immersion

PS2 berserk game is the best, what makes 2017 berserk not so great is the fact that I've played tooooo much DW type of games, they all try to look differently and somewhat play differently but they all feel the same. Played DW game from DW3 to DW8(strike force and next too), OW 1-3, SW 3-4, Onepiece PW 1-3, DQH and even first Gundam. I'm sick of their games already.

For PS4 version. Why they didn't focus more animated cutscene battle on gameplay in only single player mode. Here's my review on Berserk musou: -Lack animated cutscene on gameplay/dialogues story. The problem is like "still stop cutscene". -Less gore on gameplay than ps2 version -Sex/nudity/ecchi scene aren't important but the intense violence/gore scene are important. -The action hack and slash gameplay are too unrealistic. Because there's too many "a.i. enemy" than ps2 version. -For multiplayer mode, the animated cutscene arent important except single player mode. -And so on...

The new Berserk game is the best one. You actually have missions to fulfill and the combat feels very massacre-like just as it should be in a Berserk game. The PS2 game had sooo repetetive gameplay, that it was actually a torture to go through all that. Only enemies to defeat in very very linear and ugly environments. There was nothing more besides the boss battles, which were actually pretty cool and seem to be a bit more engaging than the the ones in the new game. Today in Berserk and the Band of the Hawk I was again cornered by the Lord of Thieves and there was no escape and I almost thought I had to die, but then I did managed to tear him to shreds. Just as Gray Fox said: "A cornered fox is more dangerous..." I wish they would rerelease Sword of the Berserk for PS4 though, because it has a unique story never seen anywhere else in the Berserk universe and having the studio behind it that did the voice overs for the Metal Gear series is awesome!

same thing happened to me with that same fight. I was cornered good to the point i couldn't move the character unless i sprinted away (Which i couldnt since he was practically on top of me) Just a few seconds away from death, I pull out the good ol' Arm Cannon!

I've something against all the characters having superpowers all of a sudden in the last game... Berserk always did the most amazing *human* characters, which contrasted with the horror of its monsters. That everyone can throw people around in one (magical colored) swing feels so cheap. But the graphics are certainly better... If only the cutscenes were half as good as the second game (and original anime/manga), direction-wise...

maybe actually play the games, read the descriptions and listen to all NPCs to get it? it only requires twelfth grader philosophy concepts to understand it entirely, or a good knowledge of greek/norse mythology.

Javan Bowen Dark souls/Bloodborne no story ? You don't read descriptions ? talk to npc's ? Those are types of game where you have to discover the lore by yourself by being curious and looking for clues in the game.

The 2017 Berserk feel like a Dynasty Warriors and a Dark Souls crossover. They killcounter and health/mana bar like it's from dynasty, but the whole hud and the lightning feels like dark souls
