I didn’t read berserk while Miura was alive, but caught up recently over the span of a month or so. I started tearing up when i approached the last couple chapters, and actually sobbed when reading his final chapter. Knowing those were the final panels he would ever draw in the manga was so emotional.

While there are stories that I love more than Berserk, none have made me feel as strongly as Berserk. Those emotions and feelings are so vast and broad too, and they all tie into Miura's art and prose. The art in Berserk elicits such awe-inspiring emotions and head spinning thoughts, that just looking through images of the story is an experience in and of itself. My word did this story do a number on me, but I will absolutely re-read it a thousand times over because there is legitimately not a single other story like Berserk in fiction. It is every kind of unique, and I am so grateful to Miura, may he rest in peace forever and always. Thank you AJ for this wonderful appreciation video, I loved every second of it!

Your commentary reminded me of a thought I had when watching The Godfather for the first time recently - these scenes look like they’ve been ripped from another universe where this is real. These aren’t characters or fiction, this isn’t acting - it feels *real.* Credit to the actors and filmmakers for making a masterpiece that evokes that. Same exact thing goes for Berserk! Just with manga, and the art and world and characters. Incredible for this vista to come from a human mind, let alone a singular visionary. Miura was touched by God.

I just recently watched the old anime and read the manga afterwards. Usually I don't really read a lot of manga, but I really wanted to know what would happen after the eclipse. While reading, I was so fascinated by the story that I at first did not take the time to look at the artwork. Every time I did, however, it was surreal. Every single page is so incredibly detailed and well-made that I soon needed triple the time to finish a chapter, because I couldn't not look at the artwork. Berserk is truly special. Honestly the art of Berserk is what kept me coming back to it when the story was very hard to read. Miura used the empty spaces and could convey isolation and loneliness in the art as well as incredibly detailed destruction, he made such good use of maximalist panels as well as the empty spaces in the page. His style sometimes remind me of Renaissance art.

When people pick a couple panels from the manga and say the story is just being grim dark for the sake of being dark shows they haven't read the manga. There manga out there that are edgy for the sake of being edgy. Berserk isn't one of them because it has so many panels that could be art pieces alone with their own story.

The art subtly hints at so many of the points the manga makes, and at Guts' core traits. One of it's best uses is how it showcases loneliness with the big, open, quiet panels. It really conveys to the reader that what seems truly frightening is not the monsters, but the moments of crippling loneliness and introspection, where nothing occupies the mind other than intrusive thoughts. The oppressiveness of these scenes really captures trauma.

I don't know if you made this video due to the new chapters or not, but to me the difference was palpable, it made it very clear to me that Berserk without Miura doesn't exists and that what we are going to get is just a husk, a parody, an aesthetic. Not to discourage anybody obviously, it's just how I felt reading those chapters and while it can certainly change and improve over time, the reality is that the sort of people that make top tier anything, are not in abundance and are often hyperspecialized in a way where they are irreplaceable, there just isn't another Miura out there, or Oda, or Togashi, etc.

@Jonsoner2 жыл бұрын
While I agree on the series dying alongside it's creator, and I completely understand the feeling (original berserk ended), it is canon. The series is being continued by his best friend since school, who himself is a great mangaka centered on stories about pain, loss and suffering, alongside Miura assistants who spent most of their time not only helping create Berserk, but hearing about it from the author directly. As Guts puts it, "things will never go back the way they were before", but there is no reason to give up on the series. And even less reason to consider the people continuing a man's life work as "heretical". To trample on their desire to continue his serie is what's disrespectful.
