This scene was so typical of the astonishing, clever and subtle writing of Mad Men. It is ironic that Bert Cooper sings the song "The best things in life are free". Appropriate too that he should appear to Don who is looking for meaning in life. Poignant and moving. My own husband with whom I had a profound intellectual connection adored Mad Men. We would discuss and review episodes of what in my opinion is perhaps the greatest television show I have seen in 50 years. My husband died suddenly 12 years ago so he never saw this and fortunately did not see the death of Lane Pryce - one of his favourite characters. I miss my husband every day, I miss how much we shared and I miss not watching Mad Men with him.

The only other time in the series where you really see Don lose a “friend” is with Anna. The look on his face when he learns that Anna has died is just pure pain. Though I’m sure he was saddened by Lane’s and Rachel’s deaths, Bert was different. And his character changes with the death of Bert, it’s like finally Don realizes there’s more to life than ads, women and money and now I’ve got to go out and find out what it is I’m missing. Bert’s final wave at the end was so simple but so touching, like saying buck up Don you will find yourself in this world!

They began their partnership with Don's desire for building something for his own. Burt accomponied Don's journey by being a partner. With Burt's death partners had to decide the future of the company. Again Don took an important decision in his life, so that he can be free to create his own ideas. Then, as you said, Burt's death hits him, as Don realize what he has built for himself, and he has no guts for it.

One of the small things about mad men that made it so great is the breathing room at the end of each episode. Those extra few seconds longer that most tv shows would cut, usually just silence. No better example than here. The emotional weight of the moment hits that much harder with those extra seconds after cooper disappears

RIP, Robert Morse. This was a lovely valedictory performance. As Bert Cooper, he didn't get to smile too often, and with the weight and the facial hair, he really didn't look like the boyish star of HOW TO SUCCEED... But here? Once he starts singing and he flashes that impish grin, the years sorta melt away. I always imagined Matthew Weiner jumping for joy when Morse agreed to do MAD MEN. "We got Ponty!"

@peterjonas4971 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but the other painful thing for Don is the realization that Bert never ever felt this way while he was alive. Bert, the man Don has always aspired to be, loved nothing and no one. What drove Bert is a mystery--he was like raw capitalism itself--unsentimental, tireless, and without a soul. And Don realizes he is heading in that direction.

@Greg F. I know right. I was in my 20s when I saw it on a channel where they showed Old School Movies. I had no idea of it's legacy back in the day. The Play and Movie Bob Fosse did the Choreography for most notably A Secretary Is Not A Toy. Another Movies that inspired Mad Men was The Best OF Everything by Rona Jaffe where there's a Scene where Don Draper is reading a 1960's Edition.
