I heard the Pentangle for the first time, on our local FM adult contemporary station, KINK Radio 102mghz, in about 1974, when the station played the Pentangle number, Sweet Child, as the title track to their double vinyl album from 1968. I quickly drove to our largest eclectic record store in Portland Oregon, Music Millennium, and bought the double vinyl album on their import British Transatlantic label. I still have it today in nearly perfect condition. It's rare to still find it on original import vinyl. I took the record cover which folds open like a book with large printed images of the entire Pentangle group, to a performance by Bert Jansch, in about 2012, I believe it was. I took several younger friends of mine and a lady friend my age. This is at a venue in North Portland, called Mississippi Studios. It was packed and sold out to several hundred fans, and Neil Young's wife Peggy Young opened for an hour, before Bert started. At the end there was a lady rounding up cables on the stage and I just thought she was a roadie working for the studio. I walked up and asked her, is there a chance that Bert might come back out? I'd like to have him autograph my Pentangle album and tell him that when I bought this at age 20 in 1974, his music changed my life. She said she'd go back and tell him. I waited for several more minutes, and my friends wanted to leave, as the place was now nearly empty. So I asked her again, are you sure he's going to come out? She says yes I'm sure because he's my husband, I'm going to go ask him now. I just said to her, oh my gosh, I'm so honored that I met Bert's wife before I met him. He finally walked out and he was limping as if struggling to walk, I think it was about the last year or two of his life. He told me that his favorite banjo player lived here in Portland Oregon. His voice sounded similar to hearing the aging Eric Clapton speaking today with the same accent. Then when he signed his name, he drew a circle with a star in the middle. I was told by others that all of the Pentangle group members sign their names with this same Pentangle monogram. I was later driving in my car, possibly not a year later and I was reading some messages under Pentangle videos in KZbin, as people were giving their condolences. I realized that Bert had recently passed away. I felt so honored to get to meet him and shake his hand and watch him play just an acoustic guitar alone that night in front of that packed crowd. I took a short video maybe just a minute or two in length of him playing, it's in my Mark Seibold KZbin channel.

I'm 35 and have played guitar (ironically in their style/fingerstyle folkish blues with syncopated rhythms and a thumbpick) for around 20 years and only heard about Bert today from a reddit post. You can truly hear how is style and patterns have influenced all the greats from Jimmy Page to Eric Clapton yet has largely remained uncredited and in the dark since then. Don't feel bad though, it seems as if nobodys really heard of him until recently but I feel lucky to have had. He's a rare original.

I found guitar through that first album and this period, summer of 1968 so it was already well-known. I really started off with Anji as the first fingerpicking piece I learned, from a couple of guitarists in France who played it as a duet, and had a copy of the LP we put on an old Dansette. Never met either of them until the 1990s, when I did, Bert had a bit a bad period in life, rescued by Johnny Marr but Marr also protected him from too much engagement with audience - Bert needed space, and time, and poor PA or his guitar going out of tune could put him in a pretty grim mood. That sorted itself, but he never did a gig with John after a certain date. John was local to me and often said hello, I helped the local theatre operator and one time we had booked Pierre Bensusan and John (not on the bill!) rolled up in his Landrover in overalls and wellies, we made room for him at the table in a pre-concert meal for Pierre, got an extra plate and loaded it from everyone's plates! I last saw Bert in the same theatre with Johnny Marr adding some electric to the set, in duets. Just after Bert's death, John had a gig with Wizz Jones. Respecting John's wishes, I didn't video their tribute to Bert, and now I wish I had not asked him and just quietly filmed it, but he knew me and my camera and I knew he was likely to want this to be 'private'. I think we managed to tell the audience, but if there's a clip of John and Wizz at Ancrum in the Scottish Borders from that date out there it would be good to find it - phone recording sometimes happened when big professional cameras had to be clearly put down and not used. Bert was I believe a complex man and at one small festival (in Tinto, on the Clyde valley side of the hills) some of my folk scene friends on the same bill put his mood down to pharmaceutical failure - prescribed medication, I think, not recreational. John was a lovely guy, always kind and helpful, very respectful to lesser players, also spending so much of his year touring abroad so although he was well-known locally he was rarely around. Both left us much too young. If you get a chance to see Wizz Jones (he's a lovely man too, and getting on in years) do so, as he carries much of Bert and John's spirit with him. Duck Baker too, Duck made an album with John but I think they had differences as once the album was out, I never saw them on a bill together again. However Duck is another guitarist who can cover some of their standards authentically.

I think I listen to three Bert Jansch releases from 1965-66 - one of them togehter with Renborn plus Jansch recorded with Donovan.Have a relaxed week, Stuart.Frank
@Adibarum6 жыл бұрын
I had no idea Bert Jansch had recorded anything with Donovan,,that a new one on me I will have to do some research and check that out
@2009framat6 жыл бұрын
I think I was wrong - I always thought Jansch played on Bert's Blues and House of Jansch. But he did not.

oh thank you so much for this Adibarum..I absolutely love these two.. I saw John Renbourn a few times here in the States.. They were so young here and yet so talented and original.. is that Jackie doing the crossword puzzles..haha.. will we ever have a resurgence of this beautiful folk music again? Great work on the sound and film quality..!!
@HenryMcGuinnessGuitar2 жыл бұрын
The Guardian page that sent me searching for this states that it's Judy doing the crossword, John's wife at the time and the inspiration for his piece of that name I guess :)
