The first gold coins in India were issued by Kushanas, not Guptas and Silver coins were in circulation from earlier centuries - the punch-marked coins of Maurya times were of silver.

Indo-greeks (i.e. of the south of the hindukush), one of such kings being Menander (who though came to ruled over bactria as well), issued only silver and copper coins and gold coins were not in circulation in this part till the time of Kushanas. That is to say - no gold coins were in circulation south of the Hindukush till the Kushanas.

you can find it in old NCERT (1999) by R S Sharma, and if you need further guidance you can read from book by Upinder Singh. The earliest coins were punched marked coins and mainly made up of copper and silver and were in circulation in parts gangetic plains
