First, I must say that I am a very old retired engineer who does not know much about the terminology of what one calls the various parts that go to make a pair of shoes. However, I know my discreet and distributed structures and their mathematical analysis, and I could not help appreciating and admiring the structure of this boot, especially how the welt circumferential band was stitched to the upper part and the inner sole and later to the outer sole. At 08:09, I am appreciating the fact that the welt band goes all the way around the periphery of the shoe which means that not only the front part is stitched to the insole and top cove, but also the back heel end. In many other videos, I did not see this welt band going all the way around and what is more, the use of glue was extensive with minimum stitching and the heel part was usually nailed to sandwich the welt. At 03:43 it is a remarkable painstaking effort to prepare that high protruding ridge in the insole so that it would act as a structural member to hold the welt all around the periphery of the shoe. At 04:07, it takes dedication and perseverance to prepare that holding wall /ridge in the insole, that will hold the welt so securely, where the insole, welt, and outsole will hold the shape as far as the width of the shoes and any vertical separation as the leg is lifted. Also at 08:33 to 09:11, the sunken plane behind the ridge holding the welt is filled with leather rather than cork and the stitch of the welt to the outer sole, at 09:57, is not only structurally sane but with aesthetics in mind, where at 10:43, hiding the lifted stitches will ensure their long life. The hand stitching that goes all the way around at 11:34 is to be admired, but with that admiration, one must include an appreciation of the tenacity and perseverance of this silent gentleman whose humility and humbleness are not so conspicuous in this, not so well lit video. Though the welt band is not stitched to the outer sole at the heel end, the lower curling in of the outer top cover at the heel has a good attachment to the heel as shown at 12: 12, where no doubt that the outer nails are complemented by a few inner nails through the insole and the lower curl in the edge of the top cover, at the heel. Congratulations to this man for his dedication, perseverance, and tenacity in applying good structural engineering. This gentleman, whose workmanship, the structural design, and artistic contoured lines, goes to make an excellent pair of shoes with such selected natural leathers and old fashioned stitches, which seems to be so accurate in their pitch to the nearest thousandth of an inch, as shown at 09:20! Thank you for the video and all I can say is that in addition to being an artist this gentleman is also a good engineer for the structural designs he incorporates in a pair of shoes, and few people ever appreciate the depth of his structural thinking! Sir, Well done.

This is normal. This is called a 360 degree welt. What you sometimes see is a 270 degree welt. A 270 degree welt means less of a lip around the top of the heel. It gives a sleeker look some people prefer although it is not as water resistant as a 360 degree welt. It depends on the design of the shoe. There is nothing special about that. The only downside to a 360 welt is the imperfection where the welt meets (it is usually made less noticeable by making the ends of the welt meet together on the less visible side of the shoe/boot) but in this video the shoemaker welts the boots using two halves of a welt, thus making it more symmetrical.

Now, _that's_ a good-looking pair of boots. Reminiscent of American WWII paratrooper boots. And laces all the way - I hate the zippers many boots have these days. I love a good pair of work boots. I've never had a custom made pair before. My favorite style is a pull on Wellington steel toe waterproof insulated about a 12 inch tall boot with a vibrant sole. And steel shank. In brown leather.

Those boots are absolutely beautiful. The craftsmanship is top tier, I have Frye, Wolverine and some others, but would love a pair like like this. I just acquired a 6" leather Copper Brown Cap Toe Iron Ranger pair too.It was worth every +$350 of it!! Red Wings as compared to the video above are quality boots too. Glad you mentioned your Iron Rangers here!! I am now working on breaking them in the most gracious of ways so that I can show them off EVERYWHERE and to EVERYONE... well, everyone who cares, is in the know and has an eye for a quality pair of great footwear like you do sir... lol!! The part that puzzles me is how every layer added to the insole appears to be nailed to the last, but that you can remove trhe last ultimately with no trouble, the whole process seems a bit like magic to me.
