Bess of Hardwick - The RICHEST Woman Of Tudor England
During the Tudor period, there were a prominent number of people who gained significant power and reputation at court through their wealth. Most of these figures who managed to secure positions were men, but there was one woman who during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I who had a huge degree of wealth. By a number of well picked marriages, Bess of Hardwick, or Elizabeth Cavendish became incredibly rich, and she was an entrepreneur and business woman. She married four times, but as time went on she held a number of the most beautiful houses and homes inside of England.

I think that the Boleyn inheritance and the queens fool are great books in the set. If you like her, try Jean Plaidy’s books (if you haven’t yet). They’re so great.

I wish the video was longer. Elizabeth (Bess) of Hardwick was a true and fine example of "the exception" and NOT "the rule". A truly remarkable woman.

Thank you for sharing. She must have been prominent for being as rich as the queen. Women have been powerful queens, successful businesswomen, smart, intelligent, caring, confident, having good sense of humor, kind, independent, and supportive.

Thank you, HRH for a fascinating video. The interior of Hardwick Hall is stunning, especially that staircase in the beginning. I always understood that in historical England and UK, women could not inherit money, property, etc. That the inheritance always went to the closest male relative, right up to "Downton Abbey" and that was only 100 years ago. It seems that in some cases women did inherit. I say, good for Bess!

You mention many times her wealth... wealth was land and income trickled in at various times. Bess was very much used by Elizabeth I to be the jailor of Mary Queen of Scots. She received prestige but at great cost financially and to her marriage. She tried to pass on custody of Mary when things went badly, but was not allowed. Financial Recovery took a very long time, and her last marriage never trully recovered.

I was furious when the idiots who made that Mary Queen of Scots movie cast a Chinese actress as Bess. I guess its okay to disrespect a historical character if she's white.
