I've shot deer with 30-30, 30-06 and 300 win mag. The higher the velocity, the more meat damage. They'll all kill deer just as dead, i think the magnums are more for increasing effective range then they are for delivering more power. I've also shot deer with a 270 and a 6.5 creedmoor and I'd say hands down shot placement is much more important than the headstamp on the cartridge

I’ve been hunting with slugs for deer for a while now, but I’m thinking of transitioning to a rifle which I can hunt Moose, Bear and deer. I prefer longer ranges say 400 + yards. What cartridge would you recommend in your honest opinion? Thanks in advance

@carterthiessen2664 3 жыл бұрын
@@chiya2006 id go with a 300 win mag, but i wouldn't use the same bullets for moose and deer. For the bears and moose and tougher animals id use a 180 grain all copper or bonded bullet. For deer id also use a 180 but just a regular soft point. I find the 150s in a win mag are going too fast and at closer ranges they destroy alot of meat. I like my impact velocity to be under 3000 fps, ideally in the 26 to 2800 range. Too much slower than 2500 and you might not get sufficient expansion. Much more than 2900 or 3000 and the bullets start to come apart and disintegrate

The rifle I hunt with and have had so much success with while deer hunting is a Marlin 30-30 lever, I do agree it's definitely underrated and underestimated.. Sure you can't get much past 280 yards but for where I hunt I've never had to take a shot farther than that and they've always hit right in the boiler room so I love it.. Bullet construction is the primary contributor to terminal effectiveness. For example. A ballistic tipped projectile will initiate expansion after than a lead tipped bullet. Velocity contributes too and the wsm tends to run lighter bullets when compared to the 300wm which means substantially more velocity.

@@paulaguilar9147 in a very basic understanding yes you are correct. However if you look at case capacity it becomes glaringly clear. You can load a 30-06 with a 110 grain bullet all the way up to 220 grain. This means you can shoot a prairie dog one day and then a moose the next without changing the rifle. Yes the 308 can do almost everything the 30-06 does but the 30-06 does it better.

@@davidh9659 now days its more like 150-200 fps difference. When you start reaching out to longer distances that little bit does matter especially for hunting bigger game when you need heavy bullets. The long action has never been a problem for me unless you are shooting competition and for speed it doesnt matter. Just found this channel and this video. I’ve deer hunted with 4 of the 6. I currently own only 1 of those 4. When I was younger I would sell or trade rifles quite often but I bought a Remington 700 in 300win mag for hunting gas lines and bean fields in 1980. I added a Redfield 6x18 Accutrack and killed deer at distances some folks wouldn’t believe. I never had to track a deer that I shot with the 300wm. I haven’t hunted in 30 + years because of my job and then came health issues but I get the 300wm mag out of the safe and wipe it down with good gun oil.

Just recently found out about the 300 wsm, i saw them at a shop and was instantly amazed by them, looked like a 223 bullet in a fat bulky cartridge, i said to myself this must be a super fast nasty round, all that powder behind a small bullet. I think the box said 3800 to 3900 feet per sec. My fastest 223 round is 3240 feet per sec. The rifles i saw looked cool also. Not to pricy either. This is one of my new favorite rounds. Im a huge 308 and 300 winmag fan, i love fast rounds, my ruger 57 is one example. And my 270. I know a good bit about guns but i learn something new all the time. I was also looking at 300WSM and 300WM when I was planning my 30cal project, but ultimately chose 308 due to the versatility of the round and availability of used rifles for the donor action. If one day I end up doing long range hunting, I may consider a 300WSM, but at inside 200 yards, 308 has the price, recoil and less meat damage advantage.

Okay - Love the video. Seven months after this video was first uploaded, I put my money on the 300wm. None of the rounds disappointed, but as a Canadian...well...300wm is just a fact of life. But my favorite rifle was the Winchester 94. Can't beat a nice lever action.

My favorite one is the .308! I have a few .308's, my favorite is my Springfield Armory Saint Victor .308. I would like to have a lever action 30-30 one day though. Just because that's what my dad, brothers and I hunted with when we were kids!

I agree. My Dad had an older Win.94 and I got my grandfather's per-'64 94...neither's stocks are anything like the grain on your rifle. Pretty much just straight grain throughout. Sweet, sweet rifles tho. Small, lightweight, and dependable. Old school deer rifle....can't beat 'em!

I have watched a lot of videos on shooting but this is the first time I have seen any of yours. I do have to say your video is one of the best. you are just an old country boy and like to have fun just like me. I was looking for a video that will show the comparison between the 30.06 and 300 blackout. I have both but working out of the country and will be coming back just for rifle season in Missouri and by the time I get all ma ammo made won't have time to play. I know there would be a big difference just didn't know how big. thank you.

300wsm is such an underrated cartridge, if you load em to mag length (my mag supports lengths up to 2.965”), you can load it to within 50fps of 300wm on any bullet up to 230gr. My go to load is a Barnes 200gr Lrx at 2900fps out of a 22” barrel.

Semper Fi !!! 1371 I went into the Corps in 62. They gave me that M14 and I used it through out my time in, even in Vietnam. I did a little shooting while I was in with a match conduction M1 in 30.06 and I fired that baby at the 1000 yd with iron sights. Both 308 and 30.06 are fine are my favorite.

it really depends on what your intended use is, 300blk is amazing if you run short barrel with suppression and sub sonic, great and quiet alternative to the standard AR15 platform. 308 has the highest ammo availability so if there is a SHTF scenario you are good, 30-06 are amazing with their longer range flight trajectory and drift, fast-n-flat. I think they would all compete in stopping power for anything on the northern continent (depending on range).

That was fun! I have an old Savage 110 that looks pretty identical to the one you have in .300 Rem Ultramag in .308 with the same iron sights. It shoots great still after all these years. I really like .308 because even throughout this ammo crisis I was able to find it here and there. Not the case w many of my other calibers. It hits my shoulder hard enough to make it a bit sore after shooting a box or two. 80 FPS slower than .30-06, but puts deer down fine.

Nice video, I thought the 300 WSM exploded the watermelon the best. But of course shot placement makes a difference as well. I would love to have a 300 WSM or .338 Lapua for a long range rifle. However I tend to love the looks of the classic wood stock bolt actions. Keep up the fun videos my friend! 😎👍
