Congrats for this cool review. 🙌 I am a user of many photogrammetry, LiDAR, and 3DGS software and apps. KIRI has given me the best response so far in terms of quality, it's just a bit slow in obtaining the model, but still, we're talking about minutes. The user interface design is what I like the most. Speaking of Revopoint in this comparison, it has that disadvantage, but I think intentionally using black in a scan can be creatively utilized, like a chroma key or mask to remove unwanted parts of the object. IDEA: It would be amazing if KIRI could do that with a color selector, not just black. I'm not sure how useful it could be, but if feasible, it would be cool.

Hey man! Thanks for the question :) Yeah, I confess I was being cheeky in my previous video comparing the 3D scanning apps, that's why I added my background disclaimer in this video to avoid misunderstanding haha. And honestly, I don't really see a $600 3D scanner as our competitor because as I indicated in this video, they are really designed for different use cases :) If you are looking to get best texture quality for game design or VFX, doesn't matter how expensive a 3D scanner hardware is, photogrammetry will always win; But if you are looking to using the 3D model for measurement and reverse engineering, never use photogrammetry, buy a 3D scanner :)

But we also have upgraded premium features, which have a pretty unique thing called "Featureless Object Scanning." What's cool about it is that it uses a neural network-based algorithm to generate mesh even if the object itself doesn't have feature points. I've been thinking about this for a while now. It seems like what you were saying in the video is that the Lidar in an Iphone helps with the user experience, but it didn't sound like you were saying that the end result is noticeably better when shot with the Iphone. Is that correct? I have an Android, and I'm thinking it's not worth getting an Iphone if the main reason is for scanning.
@jackisbuildingkiri2997
@jackisbuildingkiri2997 2 ай бұрын
Hey LincolnWorld! You are absolutely correct! LiDAR has been over-hyped by many people who don't actually understand how 3D scanning works. The 3D results directly from the LiDAR sensor are almost unusable in any application. And that's why you see most of the LiDAR scan demos are for large-scale rooms or environment because such large-scale object can look pretty good even if the accuracy is low. So when talking about the Object Capture feature in KIRI Engine which utilizes LiDAR and photogrammetry, it only use LiDAR to improve user feedback and improve processing load on your phone, but whatever good result you can get from Object Capture, you can get it better from Photogrammetry

I always wondered why don't such apps as Kiri use ToF sensors found in phones. Pretty sure it could result in somewhat accurate dimensions. Maybe you can shed some light on that. Those sensors are used for measuring of room size, for instance. In conjunction with phone's gyroscope I believe the estimation could be done really well. I also adore Kiri for free exports and consider getting paid option when I'll be scanning a lot of things.
@jackisbuildingkiri2997
@jackisbuildingkiri2997 Ай бұрын
Hey Joe! That's a great question! The short answer is that the ToF or LiDAR sensors on our phones aren't accurate enough to be usable in 3D scanning. It's true that ToF sensors can give instant measurements of the object they're pointing at, but the accuracy is usually in the 1mm-5mm range. Imagine a 3D-scanned surface with 5mm-deep bumpiness all over it. It would be more terrible than even the cheapest 3D scanner you can find. For that reason, ToF or LiDAR data is rarely used in actual 3D scanning techniques for object reconstruction. But you'd see many use cases in which people use ToF sensors to measure rooms, right? That's also because, in a large-scale environment like a room interior, accuracy isn't that critical. You'll be okay if the measurement is 5mm off for your room, right? So that's why it's good for room, but not good for object reconstruction

Hey David! Thanks for the question! And for Android recommendation, as far as it has a great camera, it will get the same result as from an iPhone, so any latest Android phones with good cameras should be good for your choice :)

Very poor comparison, technically as you didn't show the base mesh of the mini, say Lidar when it's not , Apple can say whatever they want, but that is not a Lidar, it's a dToF camera and again you didn't show the mesh. You are confusing 3d scan with 3d model or use them at convenience ,but they are not the same thing. One thing is a 3d scan, other is a 3d model. Precisely, the ones that made good visual 3d models but bad scans , you didn't show the mesh of that, if you want to compare a 3d scanner compare the 3d scans , point cloud or mesh. Scan with Kiri is not free either, the iPhone is $1400 as you need pay the data plan, we can discuss that probably you have one anyways but that is not the point. Also you took the worse scanner in that price range probably,also the scanners are sold and made for specific sizes, (some can do small to big as new Creality scanners) if you make that comparison with the Creality 3D scanners Otter and Raptor, Kiri 3D scans would look quite bad compared, as the textures of them would look quite badd compared with Kiri. Many scanners has not color even textures, it is not a important variable for them ,is geometric fidelity and precision. Other thing that you compare but it is not comparable are the textures type, as the photogrametry ones will be always better as they are pictures retro projected while the 3d scanners textures are vertex color from XYZRGB point clouds and the mesh receive colors from them and interpolate the faces colours. Again you are comparing apples with oranges there. You can still make a perfect 3D scan with reprojected textures, in example using the scanner mesh and align with the Photogrametry mesh and transfer the texture so easy as that, well no so easy but it is in your hand help with that. You are doing very nice job as CEO, you are making a great product, for sure you are nice guy, easy to note that and I think you probably made what in yours eyes is informative, representative, whatever, I would forbid that from a reviewer, but are the CEO, even if you didn't under a interested point of view, you are a interested part, so with the above makes this video look a kind of miss informative and biased. Is nice to see you in the screen and would try show to apply your app in real world use cases with scanners ,as swapping textures to improve the scans than compare them. Photogrametry can scan as good as almost any scanner but paying a price in equipment, as polarised equipment, etc maybe you can help us with that, in fact, commercially is one of the possible use cases of your app, make textures for 3D scans, I would happy to help with that . Sorry by my bad English

Hey Flameawer! Wow, thank you so much for this super detailed comment :) You made yourself very clear, and English isn't my mother tongue either. I agree, say 90%, of the the opinion stated :) Obviously you are a very very knowledgeable person in 3D scanning, but a lot of users who use KIRI Engine are not experts in such techs. For many many times, people have asked should they buy a 3D scanner or use a 3D scan app, and I totally agree with you, I'm comparing apple with orange here. But if that's what people got mostly confused about, I should at least do a comparison to show what they perform like shoulder to shoulder :) And actually, I was surprised a bit too, did you know that the Revopoint Pop 3 can also give you color textures based on topology? There is an option in the Revopoint software where you can choose to either have a color image or vertext image. I think I slightly showed it in 6:42 of the video. But still, the RGB camera in the device is pretty bad for cost optimization

Hi Cicilia! Thank you for the question! This is where I'd actually recommend Revopoint over KIRI Engine. The scanner has real-world scale and can be accurate enough for tailor clothing. Just make sure when scanning a body with the scanner, make sure the person don't move too much during the process and that the cloth they wear do not absorb too much light (definitely don't wear black cloths)
