I started making soap 2 years ago and it just exploded! I now offer a full line of all natural skincare! Our goal is to help families go chemical free! (And also bring my hubby home full-time 😉) when I first started he said "no one's going to buy a bar of soap for $8" now he sees that it could very well bring him home 🤣 ~jc

Your videos are very helpful. I can't remember the first video I saw you teaching on how to start a handmade business. I followed you for that reason and your explanations in your videos are so crystal clear. I haven't started on anything because in third world countries it's a bit slow to gather capital and I take my time to work on a different angle from anyone else. Thank you for educating the world about independence in this way.

Good to know cosmetics and skincare are on your list as I make these. Just a cautionary warning for UK sellers.. All skincare products including soap has to be cosmetically certified in UK and Europe and this is very expensive... So it's not a quick win here. Different rules in other countries though 😊

There are a TON of regulations and labeling requirements around cosmetics, skin care, and essential oils! You should also have insurance in case a customer has an issue with the product. Many of these products also require appropriate preservatives. PLEASE know what you are doing before you start to sell anything that can be put on the body! You can't just buy a kit or fill your grocery cart and sell skincare or cosmetics! You also need to be very careful of how you market your product - you can't make certain claims abut what it can do because then it becomes a drug and must be FDA approved.
@CreativeHiveCo

Hi Carrie! I agree that we should be informed and follow proper regulations when launching a product like cosmetics or skincare. Rules and regulations also differ depending on location. And like you said, for U.S. based businesses, the FDA lays out the requirements and any claim restrictions. It's a great resource to those looking to get informed. Thank you so much for your comment!

Thank you so much for these videos! I have a question- I have just recently started taking wholesale orders. Should I keep my cost of goods to myself? Also I sell clothing and I was wondering if I should mention the type of blanks I am using by name. If I do this, the retailer can find the cost of material easily but this way they know everything about what they are getting. Thank you!
@CreativeHiveCo
@CreativeHiveCo Жыл бұрын
Hi Tracie! I don't think it's necessary to share your cost of goods. The important numbers are your retail pricing and your wholesale pricing. Sharing the materials of your product such as "cotton blend" are helpful descriptors for your buyers. Naming the manufacturer such as Hanes or Bella & Canvas won't give away too much information on pricing because they can be purchased from a variety of distributers at different price points and since there are lots of other elements in your clothing apart from the blanks themselves they still wouldn't exactly know the cost of material. You can also look at how similar brands as yours do it to get some ideas. Good luck! ❤️

You make it sound so easy. LOL. Some of these products in some countries can't actually just be made as it is more strictly regulated than in the US (e.g. you need a chemist degree). Good luck :)

Hi! Thank you so much for your comment! I agree that laws and regulations differ depending on the country/state so it's really important that we check all the rules before starting a business.

Actually, the FDA doesn't regulate natural or should I say homemade or organic products are hardly as we think. I just looked it up. I can't remember exactly what it said but there are strict laws on the labeling of the product. Personally, cosmetics I would stay away from because that's very heavily regulated unlike essential oils and skin care.

Be careful with resin!! A lot of creators treat it like it's just another art medium, but it's important to know the risks. Resin in its liquid, uncured state is extremely toxic, and must be handled knowledgeably with plenty of PPE and ventilation. Plus, you must be careful not to undercure your resin and end up selling something toxic to your customers, and make sure you follow the proper guidelines on how to dispose of your consumable equipment afterwards.

Hi! My blog here can be helpful for you: www.creativehiveco.com/10-places-to-sell-your-handmade-products-online/ If you can, I always highly recommend starting with your own website as that provides more stability and security compared to eCommerce marketplaces like Etsy, Amazon, etc. They can be good as extra source of income but driving your traffic and sales mainly to your own website gives you more room for long-term growth. In terms of first products, do you have any products in mind?

Something no one mentions when making these videos that I think is important is if you decide to make cosmetics, foods, dog treats, or anything basically ingestible (even candles and soaps), these items are highly regulated by the FDA if they are cosmetics or other governmental entities. You can't just decide to make soap or cosmetics and sell them. Do your research before you jump in. I also HIGHLY recommend when you get a business license that you get product liability insurance because if anyone tries to blame you for a defective product, you could come up against serious law suits. Be careful and do diligent research when deciding to make and sell things that are ingested, put on the skin, pet foods, candles, etc.

You are basically telling people to mix the cheapest ingredients of what ever they can find together and sell these as skin and hair products and claim that they are any good.

I understand your concern, and it's important to prioritize quality and safety in skincare and haircare products. While some DIY or homemade products might use inexpensive ingredients, not all affordable options are necessarily ineffective. 🙂

Oh dear, sewing crafts are not selling well then? 😢
@dragonwielder
@dragonwielder Жыл бұрын
It's not so much that they don't sell, because they do... In my experience, I think sewing crafts are harder to make a large quantity of items from inexpensive materials (unless you're only making little things like scrunchies, and/or upcycling thrifted clothing or bedsheets or something. Most new fabric isn't cheap, even at Walmart!). Mei's examples are things that you could reasonably expect to make a decent quantity of items and sell them for boutique prices without paying a lot for raw materials. I couldn't necessarily say the same for most handmade clothing or larger accessories, as much as I'd like to!
@ninirossau2304
@ninirossau2304 Жыл бұрын
you have to find a way to source materials cheaply ( I use secondhand shops, dumpster dive and we have a music festival where I can scrounce free materials.) you have to find the right idea (what sells in your area) and you have to have a good tecnical level. I struggle with the last which is why I hand sew a lot because that looks better. you have to consider the time you use against the perceived value. but if you get these things right it can work. you just need to find your niche.
