I'm not a bullet snob so any .223 or 5.56 that I can shoot through my AR is good. If you get into a SHTF situation first it's going to be close within 40 yards and if zombies attack plenty of any kind of ammo is good.

I wanna know where you got your info on the IMI 77 not being good in a 10”. The black hills 77 otm is what made socom justify a ton of 10.5 mark 18 usage in CQC missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. They looked forever for the best ammo they could find out of a 10.5 and it was the mark 12 ammo that preformed best. It’s devastating stuff. Why run a 62 over it?

My 223/556 choice is 55gr OTM. It runs well in everything. Most of my barrels are shorter than 16". I love the IMI 77gr from a 20ish inch tube. Wicked as fukk. 7.5 to 12" I prefer 45gr to 55gr ballistic tip/ OTM stuff. Faster and the tip helps it perform better.

In my experience, green tip shines with max velocity and a nice long match grade barrel. Load into an 18 or 20 inch and it excels against getting through hard barriers (car doors, glass, drywall, etc) and still has enough ass behind it to make someone's radius and ulna explode. You can even get okay velocity out of a 16 inch 1:7 twist barrel. It's also not a famously accurate round, so the extra length of the barrel helps to mitigate some of the spread caused by the multiple centers of gravity being present in the layered metal cores. If you live in the country and need that man who just rolled into your yard in his truck dead, grab your longest AR and green tip'll work fine.

Hate to have to say this but, When it's SHTF, any ammo will be good. The standard bulk 55 grain FMJ will be fine. It would be nice to have some high grade ammo, but for SHTF, "Combat" and your relegated to an AR15, bulk 55. grain fmj will work just fine.

As far as SHTF goes I've stacked about 3k rounds of Federal XM193. If it's truly come to a shtf situation I'd be vibe checkin' with either my 18" LWRC IC DI or 16" LWRC IC A5. If I'm running either my 12" BCM or 10.5" criterion build they stay suppressed and loaded with 75g Speer Gold Dot. Both the 62g & 75g Bonded SP from Speer give the absolute best terminal ballistics compared to any other 556 cartridge within 100 yards for the short Boi ARs.

@@lakona9982 probably some sort of varmint or frangible round. He didn't seem to have had any issues with overpenetration. There was a journalist some 30 feet behind the first guy he shot, pretty much right in line with his fire (there is video from his perspective) who did not get hit and isn't sure any bullets went near him. Of course, it could have just been some regular 55gr fmj shit. That shit just destroys flesh from velocity alone and has a huge tendency to yaw its way around. Could have blown that bicep up at that range too. Consider that the hot gasses from the muzzle were likely still involved. I'm sure we will find out someday from public court documents.

Instead of gold bear hollowpoints what you want is the russian soft points. Prior to the pandemic sgammo had some really cheap softpoint loads from barnaul. They are comparable in price and the soft points are MUCH MUCH nastier in terms of performance. Even though the russians make lots of hollow points they tend to perform like FMJ. The bimetal jacket doesnt lend itself to expansion or fragmentation very well.

When I bought my Ruger Alaskan I shot a Toklat in .454, and I think it hurt me as much as it would an intruder, lol. So I went .480. It has similar felt recoil to .44 mag, with a massive meplat and mass that gives it terminal performance right there with .454 on thick-skinned targets. Of course its 2x the price to shoot, even if you handload. Fun round though. Love .454 out of a levergun, but its just too much pressure for me out of a revolver. One really can't go wrong with any of the chambering's for Ruger's big bore "carry" revolvers, just gotta find the round that works for you.

Should also be 1:9 twist for m855
@williamjames5664

Yeah i was a 0331! Semper yut devil. The 1:7 is so that the barrel will stabilize the m856 tracer round(which is extremely long) fn and colt developed 1:9 specifically for m855, but when the military requested a tracer round they just made the jacket of the m855 much longer reuiring that faster twist.

Only better for barriers. 55g does Everything else better any day. Fragments and penetrates armor better too. Speed is king on 556 not weight. Making it heavier slows it down making a velocity dependent round less effective

US ammo is known for not going ‘bang’? Russian ammo is known for going ‘bang’? Steel cased ammo is notoriously unreliable.

What's the point if you can't get the ammo now? Shoot what you have then. My strippers never rusted... Oh sorry wrong website. And lastly if your feed ramp is wearing out then don't buy guns that are made out of junk metal. It's funny these days that people think they can get an AR for 350.00 thinking its a battle rifle. Yes it will cause harm until it fails after 1000 rounds.

I want a fragmenting anti personnel round primarily so M193 but if I could get Mk 318 Mod 0 I would rather have both barrier defeating and frag anti personnel round. M855 is a penetrator tipped round and okay for barriers but sucks for anti personnel. M855A1 is a barrel burner and not quite as good as Mk 318 Mod 0.

Ammo designed for deer or hogs would be my first choice. Military ammo is range ammo.

@@StackedStoneTech A hunting bullet is a whole other subject and yes SP ammo is a good all around bullet for both anti personnel and hunting whereas ball ammo is not for hunting unless its all I have. So I agree.

@@StackedStoneTech The military does use 308 for penetration and greater range. I think they are trying to ask more out of the .223/5.56 than its capable of. Its not an anti material hard target round. Its a soft target round. It was designed from the .222 by Stoner to kill enemy personnel.

@@rbm6184 My nɔck on the AR10 is weight. People forget 22 lr will shoot through car doors and glass. Most military rounds are designed to wound. The 77 grain had to be approved by JAG, and terrorists are not considered enemy combants. So rules of war dont apply. No civilian loads their 9mm with ball. 5.56 is at 308 win prices, no one typjcally shots a controlled pair with it. I got a 700 m weapon over 300 m. There is nothing in North America i cant anchor with it. Agreed on 5.56 main purpose. Green tip was mostly for body armour. In shtf, there is no trauma surgeons.

Thats a myth, its just the feed ramps and it takes thousands of rounds. The A1 is a much better round.

Agreed use the magpul m3 magazine. Honestly even if you shoot thousands of rounds how much is a new barrel? It’s like back in the day when people use to say steel case rounds eat up extractors. Umm how much is an extractor $8? VS what you save on training with steel cases?

M855A1 is too hot and it's not all that great. I bought 5k rnds of 62gr speer gold dot a few years ago for the same money as M855. That stuff will do anything I can do with my colts. If I need more....I'll grab my M1A
