If you see some Longshot in the shelf, which is a shot shell powder, grab some. It works great for most handgun loadings. Same with Blue Dot and Clays.

JK - Longshot and BD are two competing powders for magnum type shotshell loading - tailored for pass shooting on ducks, more distance than for shooting Handicap Trap. However,, the burn makes it great for +p and +P+ handgun use for 38 Spl, 347 Magnum up to 44 Magnum and 45 Colt. The reason LS and BD were not on the must have list is their a bit more limited in versatility. Clays will handle the powders on the standard loading end so that with the powders you mention - the range of caliber handling is overlapped so that you can load everything except the real screamer loadings fori 460 and 500 S&W. Your powders are certainly good and useful... Thanks for commenting, Steve

Yeah Longshot is one of my favorite for.38 Special +P and moderate magnum in.357. Top velocities. Blue Dot causes difficult case extraction in my revolvers, just as soon use 296! Clays is one of the most consistent powders in my.45ACP, very accurate loads. CFE Pistol is another great pistol powder as well

Choosing a powder? Here are a few things I figured out. Look at your reloading manual and see what powders fill up the case preferably at least 75%, but absolutely more than 50% to prevent loading a double charge from happening and start making your list with those. Adjust the list according to the next factors and move to the top of the list the ones you consider most important. Does the powder burn cleanly? Does the powder have a reputation for accuracy? Does the powder give the velocity you're attempting to attain? How many rounds can you load with 1 lb of powder? Does the powder meter well through the powder measuring device you intend to use? How expensive is the powder is per pound? Now, see what's available and see how high it is or if it is even on your list. If the only powder available is at the bottom of your list, at least there is a powder available. I also made sure to purchase a bunch of Trail Boss so that whenever I'm introducing a new shooter, I can load up some powder puff rounds so as not to scare them off. I also save all the primers I remove becauseif primers never become available again, we will have to rebuild them if we want to continue to reload.

Got into handloading back in '92 when I bought my first high maintenance, $$$ per round, magnum cartridge rifle, a .340 Wby. Since then, whenever I buy a rifle or handgun, I also buy a set of dies, if I don't already have a set for that particular caliber/cartridge. Since you're talking about budgeting and priorities, I have always stockpiled components with my more readily disposable cash. Some people buy lotto tickets, liquor, cigarettes, and other tobacco products. I choose to feed my reloading habit. Thus, I've consistently maintained an ample supply of my desired powder, primers, bullets, and cases for the guns I own and their various cartridges I handload...to each his/her own. Learned the importance of that from the very beginning; back when primers were less than $2 bucks per hundred, powder was less than $15 a pound, (Saw IMR-4350, a favorite of mine in the most versatile rifle powder category, advertised for $56 a pound yesterday) and both were ubiquitously available. Good luck finding most of this stuff today, in the specific products you're looking for, at any price. To those just starting the journey, just remember, it's never too late, and it's probably only going to get worse. 🙁

I have been using Unique, Universal, and Bullseye for years but have more recently started using Titegroup in 38 special, 357 magnum, 9mm, and even 44magnum light target loads and yes titegroup has proven to be a very good performing and nice using powder.
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 3 жыл бұрын
You should be pleased with it because Titegroup is a great powder, LS, you have a very useful powder there. Only reason it's not on the list of must haves is because Titegroup pressure spikes big time past the published maximums (most powders have a bit of safety, but not Titegroup) so it's not a good powder for maximum loadings - any additional pressure issues will magnify with Titegroup - in the 40 cal, Titegroup has caused most of the Glock Kabooms reported. But as long as maximum charges are not being used, Titegroup is a fantastic powder, and I also have a pound of that. I traded another shooter a pound of Unique for it a couple of years ago. Good reloadin' to ya, Steve

Great material as always FC-45LC. My first powder for my newly purchased Glock 3rd gen' G21 (45 ACP) was Bullseye, and a short time later Bluedot, and Winchester 231. I haven't reloaded in about 4.5 years, and have all the materials to get in the air again when I choose to sit down and make an effort at things in a weekend. I went through my bottles of Bullseye, and Bluedot, and found them to be an interesting comparison - with one being a fast, and the other a slow-burning powder; this being when I started into my reloading endeavors exactly 10-years ago. The first drought of supplies some six (?) or however many years ago left me/us with negligible options in powders on the shelf, and when things started to trickle in again, I got a bottle of Titewad, and then Universal. When things started to come around again over the last few years, I have now stocked a bottle of - CFE Pistol, No. 7, Power Pistol, Unique. 'Have yet to put the Power Pistol, Unique, and I think No. 7 to use, but... ...when I commit to a weekend of production. :)

30-06, 45 acp, 308, and ALL the mausers are all Mauser 'A' cases,#1 head size.. Bullseye, Unique and 231 are 'paper powders' IF you can find any,great for shooting paper... back to those Mauser A cases, 4064 or Reloder 7 will get you 'factory loads' in any of them. I still use these... its amazing how I've got away from 'experimenting' and now just load the same 'old' loads that I started out with nearly 50 years ago.. LOL

Jeff Cooper's .45 ACP load used a huge amount of Unique powder behind a Hensley & Gibbs Number 68 453-200-SWC mould; (now a days I use the Lee Precision 452-200-SWC mould) the load was probably not the safest and pressures ran into the high + P range. Hodgdon's 2019 Basic manual (available online) lists a load with that projectile at 1013 fps using Longshot powder that is non+P 16,900 CUP (SAAMI Lists Standard .45 ACP pressures to 21,000 CUP and +P pressures to 23,000 CUP!) These are mainstays for my ammo reloading, not to mention that I use Longshot powder for slug and buckshot loads, it is the one powder that I cannot do without! Sadly it has been hard to find!

I feel Unique powder is one of the absolute best handgun powders ever. It's a little big for flakes but for versatility it's the best. I've used it for everything handgun related. Lately ive been using Cfe pistol, power pistol, and clays. Longshot is a great 40s&w and 10mm powder.

For pistols I use Unique (45 ACP, 38/357) For rifles mostly IMR 3031 and IMR 4350 (load WWII Military calibers) As for dies got the standard stuff (and a few unique) Rifle, 30 Carbine, 308, 30-06, 8mm, 7.7 Jap, 6.5 Jap, 7.35 Carcano, 303 Brit, 7.62 x 39, and 7.62 x 54 R Pistol is shorter 380 auto, 38/357, 45 ACP, 45 Long Colt, and 9mm. Trick is to grab dies for every caliber you have, also bullet molds and for rifles a few Gas check cutters (can cut checks out of pop cans using a lee single stage press) for a few different diameters. Last get a selection of sizing dies also you can use on a Lee single stage.

@@G19Jeeper The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms was created as part of the Treasury Department and its function was to insure that the Federal excise taxes on those commodities were properly paid. Since then it was transferred to the Justice Department and is now a kind-of FBI that is involved with those specific kinds of investigations (now also including Explosives.) Since selling reloading powder and/or primers, which are VERY gun-related things, without an appropriate license is undoubtedly a crime in all of the "57 States," I'm sure they would salivate at the thought of making an arrest!

@@arthurdevain754 I know who they are as do most people so the first 2/3 of your comment is useless. Likewise, taxes aren’t applicable on private sales at least not yet. That’s an argument for another day but You do realize that selling reloading components isn’t federally regulated like a firearm is? So nobody gives a shit if you sell a few lbs of powder out of your garage. Only issue you would have is Postal Inspectors showing up at your door if you try to ship either since both are Class 1.4 explosives. You sound like an idiot trying to tell everyone that the ATF gives a fuck about someone selling some powder.

I have 2 preferred handgun powders. The first is Bullseye, a fast burning powder that is great for loading wadcutters and still good for standard loads. The second is Vihtavuori 3N37 which is a slow burning single base power which burns very clean and is great for high power loads.

Lately I see mostly Vihtavuori, Norma and some Hodgdon and Accurate come in stock. Learning which of the less known or popular powders will work for you could come in handy. For example, my first foray into reloading was shotshell during the 2016 powder drought, and Vectan was by far the most widely available power, and was very affordable, but load data was scarce. Also "equivalents" and rebranded powders. I'm running low on Shooters World Clean Shot, but was able to score some AA No2. Pre-Western buyout AA No2 was the same powder (Lovex D032). (AA rebranded several other Lovex powders at the time). The formulas has probably changed since the buyout, but should be quite comparable, and easy to rework the loads. Quite a few powders are rebranded imports. Now we just need someone to start importing primers!

I got some Norma 202 and 203B this past week as well. Very versatile powders that sit right in that useful midrange with 4064, 4895, Reloader 15, Varget and BLC2. I was also able find some Vihtavuori N320 which works great in 9mm, .38 Special, .44 Special, .45 ACP, and .45 Colt. It sits between Hodgdon International and Win 231 in burn speed.

5744 is very useful for reduced loads in rifles. Pressures are low enough that I can use magnum pistol primers in single shot and bolt action rifles. Bottle neck cases typically run 1700-2200 fps and accuracy is amazing! Recoil and blast is reduced and the barrels heat up slower. I use cast bullet load data.
@robertchandler2573
@robertchandler2573 3 жыл бұрын
@John Beige From the Lyman cast bullet guide, 55 grain bullet, 11.0 gr gives 1765 fps at only 18,000 psi. Max is 14.5, 2234 fps only 26,600 pressure. I use any small pistol magnum primer, they work great and conserves my limited supply of rifle primers. I use jacketed bullets only.

I purchased 1# "Samples" of many handgun powders to just play with. They all work when the load is tuned to a load for your handgun. Some have only a few grains between min & max. Odly, the low end seems to work really well for punching paper accurately. When you go to 8# jugs you save a lot of $$$. This is assuming the Reloading Hypothesis that you actually save $$$ is true. In reality we ALL shoot only bulls eyes with our handloads... So we shoot leads out of boredom. 😂😆 Lee Precision has a bottle adapter that lets you put a 1# bottle directly on your press. So empty bottles are really handy even if you buy in jugs. I find the standard Lee hopper perfect for handgun load sessions. The 1# Bottle is rifle size cases. I really like the Lee Precision manual as it gives you the Volume of the charge & the Volume of a case. Low volume powders can really fill a revolver case with double & triple charges. Some do not like them because they are hard to see to verify. But they do save more $$$. We are going to have supplies again soon. With Evidence Based Medical lawsuits winning every time in every state our society is opening up. People will want to spend $$$ on other forms of recreational activities. So buy today based on (4) years in the future. Then you just cruise thru Plandemic Shortages.
