Thanks for all you do, Don. You have a great way of cutting through all the fluff and showing us a simple, cheap, and effective way to work with bees. I know there are lots of ways to raise queens, and you can't cover them all in one short video. What you show will get the job done.

Cutting a diamond pattern mimics supercedure Cells... They start out horizontal, but get drawn out and down (Bent angled Peanut mid frame esq. As Beekeeper cuts a good 1/3 off in making the pointed tip cut pattern.) While Swarm Cells are just like hanging down Peanuts, usually at the bottom of a full depth comb. 😉

Don, when cutting the strip out and placing it in a hive does the hive need to be queen less or have a queen in it? Joe

You can raise cells in a Queen Right Hive, but the Queen needs to be kept away from Queen Cells, otherwise she will tear them down, and kill any pending Queens ! 😱 Use a good quality Queen Excluder, either horizontally between boxes, or vertically either side of the brood and cell placements (like dividers in that same box as the cells are in !) Nurse bees get to look after the cells + brood either side of them... The Real Queen, gets screened away from future Queenie's... 😉

if i have a queenless hive, cant I just put a frame into that hive that has brood on it from another hive and the bees will make a queen out of it?

Yes you can, but it's their call. (They could choose any cell all over the frame, as an emergency raised Queen.) If you decide to alter the timing and position of 'cells' they are more like supercedure Cells than Swarm Cells. (Some say the former is better.) 😉

You can't, (without distroying it.) Unless you want (cut up plastic foundation) cell pieces and use them instead as starter strip's ! 😉
