Life After Fighting was a hell of a movie with a dark, gritty tone I wasn’t expecting to see from a martial arts movie. The action was so great and Bren Foster is really underrated. Need to see him in more stuff.

Thank you for the recs man! 60 minutes and The Mob look right up my alley. Btw, do you have any recommendations for a movie like Bloodsport? I'm looking for something with that cheesy 80's/90's vibe but that doesn't look/feel too low budget or poorly made. I tried The Quest but that one is just okay.
@Billy-bc8pkАй бұрын
Sadly Bloodsport is still one of a kind. Despite all the tech and advancements in filmmaking, nothing beats REAL life martial arts champions being filmed actually doing what they do best. Most of Hollywood's imitations are built around actors instead of martial artists -- I think there is Fatal Combat with Wu Jing, which is worth checking out, but it's not quite the same thing. Also, I think Kickboxer 3 or Kickboxer 4 has a similar format, but it's also not that great. Maybe Undisputed 3 is worth checking out, as it's very similar.

Of these, I've seen Life After Fighting, The Roundup: Punishment, Boy Murders World, and Last Kumite. I pretty much agree with your assessments but would put The Roundup higher because I'm a fan of the whole series and thought this was a great addition - and a step up in terms of the fighting because of the villain's scenes. I'm fortunate enough to live in a city that had screening for Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In...I ended up seeing it three times in the week that it was available. That should tell you everything, lol. (It's out on streaming 9/3 and physical 11/19) Great video - I'll definitely be checking out what I've missed.

The editing in the first half of Monkey Man is actually done very intentionally. It's super shakey for a reason, and that's because the MC is supposed to be a very clumsy and inexperienced fighter. I really enjoyed the ride actually, then one of my favorite things about the movie was the huge shift in the second half after the MC learned from his training arc. The camera movement works very differently. This was a huge character moment that I don't normally see done this well in other action films. It was also a very satisfying and emotional payoff because the MC is really struggling at first. He only learns to become a John Wick type mf later on.

Thank you for these titles! I love MA flicks but despise most modern ones. I was unaware of most of these and they may inspire hope. Only one I've seen is Monkey Man and your assessment was spot-on. Thematically reminded me of Marko Zaror's Fist of the Condor, which was also just okay.

This my 2024 in a nutshell: The biggest surprise for me was City Hunter, the comedy was ok not too grating but the action was phenomenal, it was clean, crisp and had great creativity and I think it was better at doing John Wick than what Wick did with John Wick 4. Haven't finished Baby Assassins 2 yet but the stuff I've seen looked creative and fun and if it's like the first film which was amazing then I'd like. The One Percenter for me was so bad, ignore the story and acting but the action was just plain bad. When u have guns in film u have to sell that the enemy is not able to shoot u but here people wait to be disarmed. Then end fight is long but so samey throughout and then there's a middle section fight where the hero uses a flashlight to fight and illuminate but its so drawn out and looks stupid. Twilight Walled City was OK, probably the best thing to come out of HK in a while but I was slightly disappointed with the rapid editing covering some inventive choreography. Boy Kills World was so annoying with how unfunny it was and it was shoe horned in through out. The action was OK but it lacked a certain something, I think it was a tad too flamboyant. My biggest disappointment was Kill, it was so boring and it annoys me the most when characters do idiotic things and here they do it in abundance. When someone important died u think it would kick into overdrive but then it does and then stalls again. The fights were a tad weak. Not sure if Argyll came out this year but another major disappointment. Was expecting Kingsmen but it was such a whimper. I wasn't expecting much from Formed Police Unit but it was directed by Lee Tat Chiu (who people will recognise as a stuntman in countless HK films and now a choreographer who usually works for Andrew Lau) making his directional debute but the film was just bad. It lacks action and makes no sense. The action was so poorly directed and shot. There's a slew of Andy On web films and the one I chose to watch was 12 hours (I think that's the name) which it's chinese name rips off Donnie Yen's Raging Fire. They have no connection and was produced by Wong Jing. The film is super cheap and badly acted. In fact bad everything. Except for some mildly creative fight scenes but not worth the sit through. The Bee Keeper, Monkey Man, Kung Fu Games and Lady Scorpion I've yet to watch hoping there's decent action.

Twilight of the Warriors is a Hong Kong movie with an all round Hong Kong cast and in Cantonese language. It's not a mainland China movie and does not spout any CCP propaganda. It's also a big comeback for Hong Kong movies.Since the movie is based on a comic book, expect some over the top fights. I would say it's a combination of SPL, Flash Point and Dragon Tiger Gate. It's also produced by Wilson Yip who directed all the three aforementioned movies. Yip also directed all the Ip Man movies. Kenji Tanigaki is the action director for visceral fight scenes in Twilight and has a similar feel to the Rurouni Kenshin movies. Is this the best martial arts movie this year? The answer is a big YES.
