The Seljuks had to leave their foot soldiers in Levant region and Sultan Alparslan rallied with his mounted cavalry to reach the advancing Byzantine army. The Byzantine army outnumbered the Seljuk cavalry forces 4 to 1. But Seljuks crushed the Eastern Rome in Manzikert despite all the odds and the Emperor himself captured as a prisoner. Later, the Anatolian Seljuks were severely weakened by the Crusades but they still defeated the Byzantine attacks despite being outnumbered again. There are smaller battles between small Ottomans and Eastern Rome too where they were vastly outnumbered.
