I really enjoy your videos. They’re matter of fact, easy to understand and very informative. I’m currently staying on a fantastic campsite in Ars de Re on the Ile de Re in Nouvelle Aquitaine, France. I’ve brought my 4G router and old Poynting antenna with me and was planning to buy a French SIM card, as my UK unlimited SIM has a data cap, which wouldn’t be enough for our 24 night stay. However, on arrival and for the first time in France and the UK for that matter, I have free WiFi which is giving me more than enough bandwidth for all my needs. I love France.

Interesting, but how does it compare to the Poynting Mimo 3 in your last video? My interest is for an inland waterways boats, which means it would be easier to reach and nick, compared to on top of a motorhome, so unfortunately a consideration when choosing this design.

yeah a good point, but to be fair the combined cost of the RUT241 and the Quspot is around the same as the Poynting Mimo3 - so you have approx the same amount of moneys worth on the roof.

Differences in performance not withstanding the Omnidirectional antenna is, in my opinion the best way to go as it is a total fit and forget solution. Having said that, I can see it would not be so suitable if you have a high top camper that is based on a high top van as you have the reverse problem to the signal reduction of using the RT421 inside a vehicle with its supplied aerial array. Neat solution though. Well explained and presented video as usual.

@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Жыл бұрын
Hi thanks - glad you found it useful. The units are design specifically for the routers they are compatible with, whilst it may be possible to fit the M1 into either of these units physically, there would be a few potential of issues to consider. 1) the M1 has TS9 LTE antenna connectors so you would have to use adapters to connect the SMA connectors. This may introduce loss and in our experience TS9 are at risk of vibrating loose - so you may find you have to open up the unit to reconnect them. 2) the M1 doesn't have external WiFi antenna connections like the teltonika units - therefore you would be reliant on the built in WiFi antenna rathet than being able to use the high gain antenna in the enclosure - so the M1 wifi signal may or may not be degraded getting inside the van, unless you used the Ethernet connection. 3) I've not used the administration pages on a M1 - so whilst the Teltonika routers are designed to be mounted remotely without physical access to the unit and all functions being accessible via the web interface, if you need to do anything on the M1 physically you would have to open the enclosure up to do it. (eg do you need to switch it on with a button or does it come on Automatically when you plug it in?)

Nice idea putting the router in the ariel, I wonder if the signal from router to the device is compromised getting through the metal van walls.

Because of the proximity of the router to the van there is very negligible impact on the signal.

Really impressed with the Qumax results but I think it would be a bit of a pain if you have to get up on the roof to align it, especially if you move every day or 2. I wonder when someone will bring out a self seeking antenna like my Oyster satelite dish! I currently only have a EE mifi as we've been in our motorhome full time for just 6 weeks and I'm still trying to work out what we want vs how much we can justify spending

Not participating in the giveaway (not in the UK) but interesting idea. Are they only suitable for teltonika routers? What about the cooling of the device (it can get very hot on the roof during the summer, it can also get very cold in winter), the waterproofing and the condensation?
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Жыл бұрын
Great questions, the way the router mounts connects it to quite. Big metal heat sync so I can’t see it being a problem. Since trying it out I’ve seen them in use in various industrial commercial locations so guessing hey don’t have issues with them. Once installed the units are sealed and waterproof so shouldn’t be any issue with damp / condensation. I’ve only seen them for Teltonika routers, probably as they seem to be the go to for industrial / commercial applications.

I'm interested in the QuSpot antenna and thinking of mounting it on a Kuma magnetic pole. Would this work or would it be too top heavy.
@ExploreVanUK

Hi, difficult to say as the QuSpot will vary in weight depending on which Router / Option you go for and Kuma don't appear to give any max weight for the pole. Interesting option though - if you try it out do let us know how you find it.

@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Жыл бұрын
It is a bit trial and error - luckily the RUT241 shows the signal power so once you have connected to the tower you can watch that change as you rotate the antenna to make sure you are focused on it. The Cell Mapper website is good to give a head start on the direction of the tower for the network you are looking for

@ExploreVanUK

It is very much trial and error, but the router shows a signal strength so you could just use that to help fucus in on the tower. But that wouldn;t allow you to "find" other towers it could connect to.

I bought a teltonika rut 241 on your recommendation. Iv got less signal now. I had a huawei b535 so side by side testing them with a poynting xpol1 ,iwas getting 35mb up load 22 down load using the huawei, with the rut 241 it dropped 12 mb down load barely 5 up load .contacted solwise. But it did not improve the out come .would like to try one of these antennas to see if it would improve to problem.
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Жыл бұрын
Hi this very much comes down to what we say quite regularly, there is no one solution that is "the best" and it very much depends on circumstances as to what the best solution is for you individually. We highly rate the Huawei B535, we have a couple of videos on it and have recommended it. It is a good Cat7 home router and will perform well particularly where it can aggregate multiple signals. It doesn't have the configuration levels and robustness of a Teltonika router but it's a good performing router. The compariable Teltonika router to it would not be the RUT241 it would be something like the Cat6 RUT360 The RUT241 is only has a Cat4 modem, so in reasonable signal areas the Huawei is likely to out perform it. But where it is better that huawei is in its robustness and its level of configurability. For off the beaten track use where there is limited signal then the RUT241 would be my choice over the Huawei, so whilst one of these housings is likely to improve the RUT241 performance it you could still find the Huawei performs better due to its higher performing modem.

Both are now quite old tech being only Cat 4 routers and the Falcon in my opnion is massively overpriced. Personally I would suggest spending a bit more than the KuWifI and going for something like the Huawei B535-232 with an external antenna.
