CIB Collecting starts with defining what CIB means. For 99% of the eBay sellers CIB means Cart, Manual and Box. For that 1% collectors it also includes all maps, promotional inserts and registration cards; basically that 1% collects unsealed sealed games.

I grew up with the Genesis and N64 and never threw away boxes then, so I always go for cib with those now. At this point, with the way prices are going, it’s almost better to go game and case and skip the manual. Sometimes it can make a difference of 40 bucks and to me I’d rather have a Genesis game in the clamshell than with the manual I’ll almost never read at this point. Most other systems I’m fine with cart only

Complete in box is the way to go if you're passionate about games and their universes. I enjoy seeing the different artwork on boxes and in manuals. Some games contain additional inserts like maps and posters, it's one thing miss about modern games, a card or disc alone in a plastic case is boring

If you're talking about NES or SNES complete in box, i wish you well. That would be a tall order 7 years ago, seems overwhelming now a days unless you have unlimited funds. Good suggestions though. Starting with sets rather then going for everything all at once.

I love to collect CIB snes games. My advice would be that it depends on the game. Typically, only buy CIB games, but keep in mind when you buy CIB games often a seller will charge a premium just because its complete. In many cases, you can save even $100 by buying the box/manual and the game separately. You may have to wait until an item pops up such as a rare box. Figure out how each component is worth before you collect x game.

Also when collecting boxes, take great care in where you store them. Cardboard boxes can easily degrade over time in poor environments such as a basement, etc whereas just a cart won't age as easily.

Stick to a price limit, because we all know a game is not worth £500+. I would say i tap out at £200, and only a few of my games have i paid that much for. I collect CIB games, but am happy with carts for the most part, if i see a CIB game that's going for the right price i will buy it. There are some stupid prices out there at the moment though!

Only older cartridge-based system I collect exclusively complete in box for is Genesis. They are generally much cheaper CIB than games on other systems from that era. People were less likely to throw the boxes away because most of them were plastic clamshell boxes, verses the cardboard NES or Super NES boxes, which most people probably viewed as simply packaging for the game, which they ended up trashing.

I don't have many cartridge based CIB games for the same reasons Ian mentioned. I got burned twice by online sellers. The box and label were in poor condition and i paid a bit for each game. Now i just buy lose or only buy boxed games online that a seller provides a clear picture of the game.

One thing you have to worry about with cib are the resellers. They love to up price cib. So you have to do research. But I would say just get the games you really want to keep cib. Then work your way down.

I have my favorite game of all time Castlevania III:Dracula's Curse complete in box, so I am good.. First had loose cartridge, then bought it with box at a video rental store, then bought the loose manual at used video store to make my game complete.

I collect loose or complete genesis. I used to go CIB, but I don't have a substantial space right now to display them so it's kind of whatever i find. I have my cartidges in a nice plastic box to protect them but ya. A pet peeve i have is when the box looks fantastic but the retail tab has been torn off. Slightly annoying so for now if i can get completr awesome, if the game is around $50 complete, i usually go out and find one without box for less than half. So i guess Im good with it. Unless it was a nostalgic game i plan on gazing at or displaying the box art. As a child mom got games from Pawn Shop and they were loose. I have 22 n64 games and they're all loose aswell id wtf i did with those cardboard boxes

I am pretty much a cib collector but I only go after those games that I consider special. The space needed to go for full cib collections are significant. While I really do enjoy the appearance of my collection... (I especially love box art from nes and snes era), it comes at a significant cost. On average for nes, expect to pay 100% more for box/manual. In other words, a $50 loose cart will typically be $100 cib.

Even trying to get some harder to find manuals for my SNES games, spent more time looking for manuals than buying complete copies. Especially when it's retro, people rarely sell the manuals alone, not unless it's dirt common games. There's probably no system now you could collect easily unless you have tons of money to spend. The rarest boxes will be insanely marked up. Need Web of Fire on 32X or Waterworld and Jack Bros. on Virtual Boy? Even though Game Boy is one of the less-spoken Nintendo consoles for collecting, I've heard finding the rarer boxes like Joe & Mac or Shaq-Fu to be as insane as NES box collecting.

I collect genesis games and almost exclusively buy loose cart, and I have to disagree and say loose cart is actually a great way to go for genesis. The reason is because genesis cartridges are designed to have the same physical dimensions as audio cassettes (and have end labels), so you can use any of the plethora of cassette storage solutions for your games. I have 80 games in my collection, most stored in a black 'cassette drawer' and I have a separate small cassette box for EA titles and other odd shaped carts. I only have 2 CIB titles, and they are both $100+ games with special value to me. I always sell the box when I find a game that I can't buy as loose cart, but I keep the manuals. I'd also point out that while it's true that the plastic clamshell genesis boxes are nice, many of the releases and relreleases later in the console's life came in crappy cardboard boxes that are no better than NES games.

If I was to start collecting CIB. I would start collecting anything that are movie and cartoon games. Then move to collecting the most fun & popular Konami and Capcom titles. Then collect Mario, Zelda, Final Phantasy, Mike Tyson, Dragon Warrior. Then go with games made by Mindscape and Tatio. Then my favorite to get is Dusty Diamonds Softball which I have already.Maybe then get Adventure in Lolo series and Adventure Island series. Then go with Tengen games. Then skip out on Code Masters games and that one company with the odd colored cartridges. Maybe skip out on black box games. I would get anything with associated with Ninja's.

my best approach at CIB collecting? create my own cases and manuals using Universal Game Cases, a printer and staples (for the manual) the games by themselves will be cheaper so lots of $ will be saved to collect the games. besides some systems like Nintendo consoles used really shitty cardboard back in the day, they either got thrown away or are easily damaged, Universal Game Cases are much more durable, plus they come in one size for easy shelving.

Best approach is having a lot of time and patience. Your not going to get them all at once or fast, especially if you don’t want to spend a lot of money. Just be patient and devote a lot of time to looking. Making friends with other collectors is a good way to beef up your cib collection as well, you get first dibs when they sell stuff sometimes.

For me I'm fine with my NES games being loose, SNES games being loose but I give it a dust cover, N64 games go into a custom artwork clamshell case, Ps1 has to be CIB, Genesis has to be in clamshell but no manual is fine, and any other disc based system needs to least It's case and artwork, in good condition. Manual is a bonus.

I want to get a CIB copy of “Yo Noid!” Because I played that game a lot when I was a kid. 👍🏻 Though I’m think CIB collecting for nes is just dumb. Those boxes were meant to be thrown away. And most likely the majority of complete boxed collection will look tattered and not nice to look at. Carts are the way to go. I completely agree with Sega Genesis though.

What is this obsession with specifically getting CIB nes stuff? When will this ridiculous nes hipster collecting era come to end? Why is the nes overpraised as if it the king of retro games when there clearly other great if not somewhat better systems to collect for. There are much more interesting things to collect than nes boxes and manuals, try collecting the amiga 500, MSX2, Sharp computers, cheaper priced PCB arcade boards than wasting it on paper. Better yet go for the actual original famicom releases complete in box if anything for less than half the cost.
