I'll toot your horn for you, the American Viking Filthy Viking has been the cigar that has converted most of my friends and family to joining me in the cigar rabbit hole. Many were kind of casual with cigars and would get one for a party occasionally but when I brought a few Filthy Vikings to a party once everyone was hooked and wanted to get their own humidor setup!

First cigar recommendation = Perdomo Lot 23 Maduro. Step away from the woody cream of Connecticuts and get into the sweet chocolate earthy flavors of Maduro. Maduro look intimidating but they are smooth and easy smoking

First cigar was an Acid Blondie, then I got hooked on the Fuente 8-5-8 Maduro. Quit smoking for 13 years, and last summer found myself standing in a humidor and picked up my very first Oliva Serie G, and have been introduced to many others. For me, there will always be an Oliva in my humidor, they have such a great catalog that offers so many flavors at a great price.

My first true hand rolled cigars where Padron Corticos naturals. They where strong and flavorful enough to really let me appreciate a cigars flavor rather than the musky smoke of a cigarette, and they where still small enough to not make me sick with the strength of Nicaraguan tobacco.

The cigar that got me back into the cigar world was the MUWAT Kentucky Fired Cured Cigar. I’m grew up a farm boy from southern Indiana right across the river from Rabbit Hash Ky and worked in and or raised tobacco from the time I was about 8 years old. I’m gonna try these recommendations from you this year though 👍🏻

My first (by recommendation) was a Regius conneticut but it was too mild for me, I got no flavour from it and almost decided this wasn't for me. But I went back to the store, spoke to a different guy who heard I like strong black coffee, whisky like Ardbeg and he recommended plasencia reserva original and now I get it 😁 it was a beautiful stick and I ended up going back for more so I could pair it with whisky and coffee and it was a game changer.😁

I think Connecticuts are great for people new to tobacco, when somebody asks me what should be their first cigar I ask them are you new to tobacco or new to cigars. If the are new to tobacco I refer them to something Connecticut and lite. If they aren't new to tobacco and have used other products like chewing tobacco I try to refer them to something more like a Habano. For me I smoked for several years and then used chewing tobacco for several years and if I would have jumped into cigars on a lite Connecticut with little or mild flavor I'm not sure I would have kept with it, luckily I just got several different cigars in several different leaf's and strengths and then found what I liked and developed my palate from there.

I don't remember my first cigar because it was many years ago and I rarely smoked cigars until the pandemic hit; however, through the purchase of samplers and five pack deals I've tried at least 30-40 different cigars in the last year and a half (across at least a dozen or so manufacturers.) I can absolutely tell you the one that blew my mind and vaulted straight to the top of the list...the Oliva Master Blends III. HOLY COW! I know their Serie V line gets a lot of attention (and I've tried a couple of them, too,) but I am still enamored with the Master Blends III. I am still trying new makes/models all the time, but I have yet to find anything that tops the MB3. (Full disclosure: my #1 go-to stick is the RyJ 1875 Nicaragua - with the orange band, not the Connecticut with the yellow band like in the video - because it is a very good stick but much less expensive than the MB3.)

So I’ve recently started walking and smoking and I’ve noticed they start to taste funky around the half way point despite the fact that I keep them at proper heat and humidity. I live in Dallas if that helps any. Does the extreme heat and low humidity dry the cigar out as I smoke it?
@christianoliver35723 жыл бұрын
Hey I grew up in Plano and actually had my first cigar there with my buddy's dad. We always smoked outside and I never noticed any of the different marcas we smoked getting funky at any time. I now live in Corpus Christi and I smoke Por Larranaga Petit Coronas as my favorite 'dog walker' cigars and I haven't noticed any problems with smoking outside in the heat & 99% humidity. Luckily for me my wife has no problem with me smoking in my office & in general she likes the smell of cigar tobacco so I mostly smoke indoors but I've smoked many different cigars outside in my 21 years living here and I've never had this problem. Are you just smoking one particular brand or size? Maybe it's just what you smoke?
@Musicmedia44213 жыл бұрын
@@christianoliver3572 The one I noticed it on was an ep carrillo. They aren’t exactly known for being garbage. It must be user error then. Something I only do while walking and not just sitting down
@christianoliver35723 жыл бұрын
@@Musicmedia4421 I very much like the Carrillo cigars but I haven't smoked more that 10 or so. It very well could be that your pace of taking puffs is altered in a different situation. Maybe you're smoking a little fast? I mean hey - this could actually be an interesting experiment!! Also maybe you could be getting it a bit too hot when you're lighting it outside with a torch lighter?? I've done that before playing golf in windy conditions and also not shielding my cigar from the wind in the golf cart. Burning it too fast can give a bitter taste that once it's there the cigar is just going to be bitter.
@Musicmedia44213 жыл бұрын
@@christianoliver3572 I think that might be it. I can’t even see the flame when I light it outside. Unfortunately I’m not in a position to light up inside right now.
@christianoliver35723 жыл бұрын
@@Musicmedia4421 Well if you're willing to make an investment there are cigar lighters that give you both a dual torch flame and a soft flame. Honestly I don't know who makes them but Cigars Daily has reviewed it and it looked good to me. But hey in North Texas I'm not entirely sure that would help because of the wind!! They call Chicago the Windy City but I'm pretty sure it ought to be Dallas!! If you have to light outside then maybe try standing against a building?? I know what you're up against, and at times you may as well be trying to light on a ski boat!! Anyway you'll figure it out!! Where there's a will, there's a way!!
