The Tech you're using is the Post-WWII model. It shaves amazingly smooth with a multitude of blades. The Pre-WWII models, especially the Fat Handles are even more to my liking.

When I first started wet shaving 10 years ago, my starter razor came down to the EJ DE89 or the 34c. I chose the DE89 and couldn’t be happier. I still use it every day. I just recently bought the 34G to test out. Honestly, I much prefer the DE89, don’t know why. For Merkur, I like their 37c for a more aggressive shave.

The Merkur 34C HD was my "starter" razor, but I didn't go far from it. My daily driver is a Merkur 38C. Same head, longer handle. Same great shave. I like the heft of both. Now that I have "My" razor. I need to dial in "My" brush type, and blade.

I have used the same Merkur 34c for over 30 years, the very same one. Still looks and works like brand new. At Amazon.runs about 35$ US, A bargain! However, over the years, with some experimentation, I am using Feather Platinum blades exclusively, but Astra was very good. Feather blades give me about 3 to 4 shaves for each blade, they are also inexpensive. I do splurge on the shaving cream, Trufit and Hill 1805 is excellent. But Proraso served very well and is very inexpensive. I have No idea why anyone would call the Merkur 34c A "starter" razor! Its probably the most sold safety razor in the world, that isn't plastic throwaway.

I ordered a 34C this Friday and it should arrive by Wednesday. Can't wait to try it. My only concern is that it's made from a fragile alloy instead of steel. After reading your comment, I feel like that won't be a drawback if yours has survived longer than I've been alive :D

I am 70 y/0 and yes I still use that same Murker Razor. Its been around the world a few times. I have tried others, but if you do not like it, try the Rockwell 6c. Its double the price, but it does offer, "plates" to adjust the angle of the shave. It is made of stainless steel. The head is a little more heavy. I got one as A gift years ago. Its just fine. It sits unused as A backup in my medicine cabinet.

I have a multitude of Vintage Gillette razors. The Techs are all solid performers, and the Adjustable Gillettes are fantastic daily razors. My favorite by far is my 1917 Gillette 3 piece Old Type. It is a little more aggressive than a Tech, but shaves smooth and close without irritation with nearly any blade I use in it. IMO it's the Best of the Best Gillette razor.

Good morning Matt. I am a big fan of these types of videos. The big surprise is the vintage Gillette razor, as I thought it might win in this testing. However, it is good to see a razor that was designed about 80 years ago is still a very good design and relevant to this day. I tend to "Bench Mark" with Gillette razors in terms of build and shave quality. Great content once again. Thank you so much!

Todd F for sure. I think the head is awesome but you can't deny that more weight makes for an easier shave.
@toddf9321
@toddf9321 7 жыл бұрын
I agree Matt. That is why I prefer the Fat (Heavy) Handle Tech...yet even that version is light at 49 grams. I have held the British Ball Ends that had a bit more heft...about 65 grams or so...more or less. Perhaps you can shed more light on this subject. It seems to me that Ball Ends weight anywhere from 45 grams and up to around 65 grams while Fat Handles hover around 50 grams.

Hands down the BEST starter DE razor is the Feather Popular. Nothing comes close to it for value, ease of use and safety. A very mild razor yet with one of the closest shave you will get. No one seems to mention it yet it can't be beat and I have over 50 razors mostly vintage. And only £9 direct from Japan. Go and buy one guys.

I have an idea. For new wet shavers, what about after shave care of your razor? Do you hang it up to dry with the blade still in? Take out the blade and let it dry on a paper towel so it doesn't rust? Thanks

I really like my 34C I find it to be super comfortable to shave with and can get BBS. My Tech actually feels more mild and I think I compensate for it's light weight by pressing a little hard sometimes which leads to cuts.

Very helpful, I am going to pull out my 99R, because I also like the 1 pass shave. I just need to get use to the TTO razor. I have a ED D89 and a Mekur 38C. I like the 3 piece, but the 38C is more aggressive than the D89.

Nice recommendations, but why don't you recommend any adjustable razors? They'll better suit different shaving skills and beard lengths, plus (despite a higher initial cost) refrain a need for a more aggressive razor some (many?) find they need when their initial 'one setting' razor isn't capable of giving a suitable shave in a reasonable length of time. Thanks for your videos.

So I have been using DE razors for only a couple months now and your videos are very informative so I thought what a better venue for a couple questions. First off my fiancée got me my first DE razor by Wahl. From what I’ve seen on videos it looks extremely similar to the Merkur 34C. Can you confirm as I am considering buying the Merkur but don’t want two identical razors? So far I have 3 DE’s, the WAHL, Parker 92R and Edwin Jagger 86bl. I like to have options and am looking for more info on other options avail. Thanks

Beginner is spoof beginner is crap . When I was 13 or 14 a started out on a semi aggressive razer my beginner razer was the handle of a tooth brush People don't waste your time on shit go for a medium of semie aggressive . My baby face stayed baby faced using a simie aggressive razer . Soft razer's are for bum fluff . Go for a razer that you can adjust the settings to you and to what you want it to be . Strong facial hair go for a good razor not a soft piece of junk
