Thank you everyone for watching! It's been so cool reading your stories of how you got started and what you'd recommend for bikes that really grow with someone. I recorded this about a week and a half ago, and I'm happy to report that the healing is going well from my gum surgery. Also it was pointed out in the comments that I should emphasize starters get a used bike! This is very true, and will lower your riding anxiety a lot/make mistakes less devastating. All of these bikes can be purchased used at 2+ years old.

Meghan Stark you absolutely right. It depends on the persons and skills. I took MSF... but before that I try few very heavy bikes choppers to get that feeling you know lol At the dealer I was advise right away “you can’t grow with 250” after 3 months you will regret you didn’t get at least 500 😂My friend also told me if you responsible person you can start even with 899cc ? Nobody will tell to twist that throttle to the end ?!!! What for ? And he was right. So my first 700cc and still is. But I could get 900 very easy now. But I fall in love with my Fz-07 so I plan to keep it for at least 5 years. Since I got it brand new and did lots of modifications on it.

Interesting discussion/topic. I have been a biker for some 40 years now. My 27 year old son who has never ridden before wanted to get his first bike this year. He wanted me to help him find his bike. All I knew was he wanted some type of cruiser style but with a fixed fairing. I suggested several different types of bikes, but he ultimately decided on a Victory Cross Country Tour which is an 800+ motorcycle. To say that I was concerned would be an understatement. He had never ridden a bike before..... as his dad, I was worried. Despite me trying to talk him out of it, he said he didn't want to get a starter bike that he would outgrow in a year. So, I just told him to take a quality MSF course and practice A LOT. Well, this was in March 2020. He ended up purchasing a Victory Cross Country Tour and then took his MSF course in June. To date, he put almost 4,000 miles on it from June 23rd to November 1st. Like you Meghan, we live in the ice box to your left (Mn). I am very impressed with what he has accomplished this year. We have had more than a few rides together and it warms my heart to have the ability to do this with my son. Love it.

So encouraging and real! I drive 45 minutes to work I have to get on the highway in Atlanta traffic getting a smaller bike is what everyone have been recommending. I agree with getting the bike you trust yourself with that can ride on highways and you can respectfully grow into!

I started biking a year ago. After 5-6 months of research I found the best starter bike all depends on the person. Age and income really come into play also. I never believed the “get a cheap bike first” theory. Choose a bike that fits your life and income...and reason for biking. I bought a $15k Ducati as my first bike because I didn’t want to trade in for another one next year, etc, etc. I have plenty of income and I’m older, so no need for thrills (former career fireman) and enough income to purchase a quality bike! But, I also took my time and don’t speed. Fo the first 500 miles I did almost all parking lot training. Parking, turns, stopping, etc. Maturity comes a long way also. Lastly, get a bike that fit your ride. I live in Washington DC. Highway is 65-80mph. I haven’t ridden on highway yet, but I’m happy my bike is able to when I do.

I think finding a friend with a dirt bike is the best way to start. You can build your skills up out on trails or fields without worrying so much about traffic, etc. Even the little trail bikes will help build confidence, plus it'll let you know if you enjoy riding in the first place. I started on the street with a raked out 1977 KZ650B at 17. It had charging problems, so I only had it about three years & never bothered getting my MC endorsement. I don't recommend that. After selling it, I didn't ride for about 10 years. I restarted riding in 2007 or 2008 & did everything legal & got licensed on my 2nd, 1st bike. I was 6'3", 240lbs, & looked like a giant on my 2005 Yamaha FZ6. It was a really agile & fun bike & I didn't have any problems passing my licensing test. It might be a bit too much power for some, but it worked out awesome for me. I put about 9,000 miles on it & did several trips from KS to AR on it & a couple of trips to WY & CO. I love my 2009 BMW R1200RT that I bought in 2012 with around 6300 miles. I will surpass 30,000 and maybe even 40,000 miles on it this summer going to Alaska & elsewhere.

Good point, know your riding style and how you plan to use the bike. If the majority of riding is around town and to/from campus or work in traffic, then look into a Honda with DCT (automatic). DCT takes the effort out of stop and go traffic. Honda CTX 700n DCT is a nice commuter bike.

Good info.👍. Before even thinking about riding on a street, here are things to ponder: motorcycles are tiny compare to cars, SUV and trucks. Most first riders need to be comfortable on streets and highways without a metal cage. Most first riders don't know how fast motorcycles accelerate even a beginner bike.

Add to the list the Suzuki VanVan 200. I used to ride years ago but injured tailbone severely to the point I needed surgery. I thought I would never ride again 😢 Then i started seeing adverts for the VanVan and without any logical reasoning I went to test ride it. It was the most comfortable motorcycle I've ever ridden! And then it rode better than my Katana. I went on to discover how amazing scramblers are, how stable they are, how they can take anything.

I started riding 2 years ago. Just like you I started with a 2009 Honda Rebel and rode for it a season. Last year I upgraded to Scrambler Icon and absolutely love it. I chose Honda Rebel for reliability, price and safety so I don't break on the road either due to mechanical issues or engines that leaked. Scrambler is pure fun, nimble and turns a lot of head for its retro style. The only shocker was when I took it to the dealer in Nebraska, the oil change cost me $250 :-)

I started out on a 74 Honda CB550. By started out in mean my dad kicked me out of the nest when I was 18 and said he’d take $250 for the bike and console TV 😂. I still love’em though. Nice to see other ladies who love naked bikes. I started riding in 2016 but didn't get my own motorcycle until 2018. It was a 1981 Honda CB650 on fb marketplace for $500. It looked like it had been sitting in the guy's barn since the Clinton administration. Fortunately we knew a local mechanic who specialized in UJMs, and spent a decent bit of money and time to get her fixed up enough to pass PA state inspection. That bike was a piece of crap (I literally had electrical tape on the gas tank to cover the Bondo used to fill in the dents, and I had to do a specific ritual every day just to get the damn thing to turn over) but I rode the hell out of it, in rain, shine, and snow, until a garage flood damaged her engine beyond repair. Now I'm looking to upgrade to either a KTM Super Duke or a Kawasaki Z900. If I had to do things over, I would definitely choose something different to start with... maybe a KTM 690 or an FZ-07. I had no qualms starting on a 650cc because I was already mid-20s when I got my license.

I think it's best to learn on a small motocross bike off road it teaches you not to chop the throttle when it get out of shape and there easier to slide about and wheelie. In the uk our bike licence is in two parts the first is your Compulsory Basic Training or C.B.T. This only takes one day and allows you to ride a bike on the road up to 125cc. Riding a slow bike is good for teaching you how to late brake and carry corner speed. You can also go in for your full test but this takes longer and costs a lot more.

Really solid information, well presented. I'd actually like to throw two more bikes to the list that entry-levelers would be wise to try out. The Triumph Speed Twin is a phenomenal "cradle to grave" bike; the three riding modes allow a beginner to work their way up the torque ladder. And the Yamaha XSR700; phenomenal bike that is very reasonably priced, easy to maintain, great handling, light, and powerful (but not crazy like the 900).

As for whether or not it would be suitable for someone who is 5'4 I'd have to say I'm not sure, I am 6'0 and I have both feet flat on the ground, the seat height does feel quite low so its possible that someone shorter than I am could comfortably have at least one foot flat to the ground. Hope this helps a little.

You provide very good advice. Money can influence the starter bike decision. But when possible (assuming the rider is just beginning), I would recommend a good used bike under 600CC at a low cost. This will allow for the occasional ding/dent/etc without that additional guilt that comes with a new rider. I would also recommend a cruiser initially. Cruisers are typically a little heavier and have governors to control speed. Safer for learning than speed bike. But as you said, buy the bike that best fits the your budget and physical specs. Great video and fantastic channel. Thanks for sharing and hope you feel better soon. :)

If money and range aren’t a huge concern, I’d recommend looking at Zero (electric) motorcycles. No clutch, so you are able to really focus on traffic and learning maneuvering, breaking, turning, etc... Or a bike with an auto clutch like the Honda NC series bikes. I do think physical size is the other big consideration. A 30 inch seat would be pretty low for me. Hence I have an adventure bike for my second bike, even though it definitely has a lot more power than necessary. (I have a 34 inch inseam).
@The3336 жыл бұрын
A new $11,000 bike is a good starting point for a first bike??? Hmmm... A couple things you did not address that I think are worth mentioning in the context of a brand new rider: First, most new riders are gonna make a mistake of one sort or another that will most likely result in damage to their bikes. Could be as simple as scraping the garage door frame when taking it out for a ride or it could be a low-speed, low-side slide because they don't know how to corner a full sized bike yet. Either way, that's gonna suck (and cost a lot) to deal with on a Ducati. So you did not address the alternatives - 1) Buying used for your first bike, knowing you will probably make a mistake. Or, in the same spirit 2) Buy leftover new - may not be your dream bike, but it will cost significantly less than the current model year and ya won't feel quite so bad when ya drop it at a red light in your first month of riding... just sayin' :). I personally like my choice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnSxemR_r81oeJo

Hi there! You're right, buying used is a really great option for new riders, I started out on a used 2007 bike as I mentioned in the video. I didn't stress it that much (couldn't be comprehensive about everything), but I would discourage against a brand new bike for a new rider as well. The bikes I listed in my video can all be purchased at least 2-3+ years old. My main focus was the style and weight of bikes, but new vs used could be a whole other video. Thanks for watching!

Good thoughts. Kind of what I was thinking when I got my first bike a year ago. Ended up getting a Royal Enfield Continental GT. Question for you since you mentioned height. What height are you? Thinking about getting your bike and want to know if I'll be flat footed as you seem to be in some of your pictures. Thanks!
@MeghanStark6 жыл бұрын
Awesome! The Continental GT is a great looking bike but the HP is pretty low considering. Vibrates a lot too as I'm sure you know! The Scrambler will be an awesome upgrade. My inseam is 30 inches, so pretty long considering my height. I also usually have a boot on and that gives me over an inch to work with. Hope this helps!

@@MeghanStark Yeah it does. Thanks! My dream bike was a Ducati Sport Classic 1,000 since it's the style I wanted and it's in one of my favorite movies, Tron Legacy. I figured the CGT was a good cheap first bike with the style I wanted and it ended up looking like that Ducati coincidentally. Your bike is kind of what I picture they'd use if they made that movie today. They did use a Ducati Cafe Racer in the Venom movie though! Thanks again!

Hey sorry I am late to the party. I am Japanese girl living in Scotland and have always ridden. My first decent bike in Japan was a heavily modded Honda CB750f with aftermarket fairings and painted to look like Mitsubushi Zero WW2 fighter plane (Yeah I was a classy bitch 😂😂) Now I ride a 96ci Harley Street Bob (FXDB) that I have personally customised and totally blacked out. I am getting rid of it soon as it's getting old and replacing it with a Yamaha XV1900 and will do a full custom black job on that too.

a great starter bike would be the duke 790. i started with a ninja 650 and 3 months later i have a monster 1200s. so, a duke 790 would have been perfect. KTM has a drop kit and lower seat option.

Hi Meghan. I just came across your channel and I want to start off by saying that I really appreciate your enthusiasm for riding and your passion for sharing your experiences with other riders and other women. I think it’s great that you have a channel to help others. I do however have an issue. I myself am 42. I’ve been riding for over 20 years and have ridden many many different bikes ranging from the legendary CBR 1100xx to the new Kawai H2 800 sized sport bikes. 600 cc race replicas and all sorts of cruisers from Harley street glides to Yamaha 1300s. A lot of experience on a lot of different bikes. I have track courses and taught new riders their initial rider training as a motorcycle safety foundation instructor. I think it is great to give advice but I think that it is reckless to give advice to new riders when you have such limited experience yourself. It is also reckless to advise new riders to start off on an 800 cc bike or a 600cc super sport or race replica. It takes several seasons of riding to be able to acquire the skills needed to safely ride and handle those types of motorcycles and even then 80 percent of riders who ride these types of bike don’t have the skill or training to be able to ride such bikes to their potential properly. Hence the reason so many end up in fatal accidents. The other reason it’s irresponsible to recommend such bikes to beginners is because those types of bike require skill to ride due to their design and ride handling characteristics they were not made for training and a new rider will never be able to properly acquire the skills to ride such bikes and master them. It makes far more sense for a new rider to learn and master the advanced skills on smaller more easier to manage motorcycles and then transfer those skills onto a higher performance machine. Ultimately they will be a much better rider. The problem is some people let their ego get on the way of common sense and it usually ends badly. You have to learn to crawl before you walk and an a fighter pilot starts on a small single engine 100 ho aircraft not a fighter jet. Again I admire your passion but you should reconsider using your channel in a more responsible way. When you give good solid advice from experience you will be far more respected in the community. And will really gain a following. The riding community needs more women involved and please don’t take this as an attack on you because it’s actually friendly advice to help your channel grow and become respected.

Another fascinating video. Knowing yourself. I hadn’t thought of it like that. My first bike at the age of 24 was a 750 GSXR closely following a year later by an 1100. I am not a crazy person so always rode like I was driving Miss Daisy, except when going in a straight line. Definitely think Meghan is on to something here that you must know yourself. Problem is, lucidity and self awareness rarely accompany recklessness and short sightedness :-( “if you are asking if you are mad, you aren’t mad” may also apply when asking yourself if you have self control: if you don’t have self control you’re likely to have the arrogance not to know whether you are lying to yourself 😅

That is so true! Especially if someone is getting into it by themselves, they may have no reference point and no one to help do a character breakdown. Haha. I'm a pretty careful rider too 90% of the time. Love having a bike that can open up when I need it to

Thanks. Yeah, before I passed my moto safety class I was looking at all kinds of bikes. I had heard the opinions of others who said a new rider should start with something small, as well as some who said you should get a liter bike because they are more stable. I wasn't opposed to riding a small bike but I didn't want to grow out of my first bike in a short time. So my friend who has been riding for years said I should get a Suzuki S40 650 because he had one previously and really liked it. So I ended up getting one. After riding it for a few months a driver pulled out in front of me and totaled the Suzuki. So I looked at a lot more bikes to buy my second ride. I really liked the BMW r800r. I was at the dealership checking one out, then brought the same friend the next day to hear his recommendations. I was nearing purchasing the bike and noticed the r1200C next to it. All I said was that's a beautiful bike. My friend looked at it and was convinced it was the right one for hauling a trailer along Route 66. I wasn't even considering another cruiser or a big bike with 1200 cubes. I just thought it looked huge and didn't know if I could control it or even upright the thing. Well, I took his advise and now have it, getting used to it, and modding it for my big trip. It's a great bike for the open road. I still like small bikes, especially 70s classics. It would be great to have both bikes so I can ride around town on the small one. My opinion after riding a large bike...mine is quite stable but it does take more effort to maneuver a large bike because of the weight. The difference in weight has been about 100 lbs, which doesn't seem like a huge increase, but even that much difference in weight feels like so much more. Hope you heal soon.

I started on an 125ccm enduro for 20months. I switched to an 600 monster from 2000 when I got my big licence. Still have it after 10years. I love it! I'm thinking about upgrading to a 900 or s4 for the "fun" but my little 600 got enough oomph for daily driving and I also don't have the spare money for am s4 ...... So I guess I will just do a refresh for the next season. Knowing yourself is a very important. Good you talk about it! Only thing I would recommend is ABS. Not only for beginners. Mine doesn't have any electronics and i love that! But in the extreme situations I wouldn't mind having some safety electronials :-D all the newer ones should have it though.
@mal-t6 жыл бұрын
Oh and I crashed my 125ccm a few times while offroading and one time I lost it on the road while cornering. No big injuries but key experiences for getting even more respect for riding a bike and also to learn about how i react in such extreme situations. But there may be better solutions to learn more about how yourself reacts in such crazy moments. :-D

These are just my personal recommendations, but I did suggest 2 quite affordable Honda motorcycles that someone could find used for less than $2,000. And while it is a premium bike, I wouldn't say you'd have to be a millionaire to ride a Ducati either! i personally would recommend a smaller bike. it's not just about responsibility of twisting the throttle. i remember a guy in my mtc course that didn't have the hands coordination and gets really nervous, so he revs up really hard because he had beginner's fright. when i talked to him about it, he told me that he didn't want to rev like that but he blanked out. his mindset is wanting to be responsible but he's just one of those that doesn't handle pressure well. the smaller bike will be more forgiving. plus it's way more fun to ride small bikes hard unless you are a really big dude who can't fit on small bikes.
@MeghanStark6 жыл бұрын
Yeah there are some people who are quite nervous or have to get used to reacting under pressure. I had never heard of "whiskey throttle" until my friends said it; my brain was never wired to accelerate instead of brake. I also used to ride dirt bikes as a kid thoug. I feel like people who do cycling, skateboarding, snowboarding, skating, etc tend to adapt to motorcycles super quick and don't need to start so small. Know thyself!
@Henlarious6 жыл бұрын
“Get a smaller bike” is never the answer because everyone is different. People who don’t see this don’t see the full picture. I know road bikers who learned to ride motorcycles without any issues or hesitation. Its all about the person. And everyone is different.
