Just wanna give a shoutout that my wife and I really love this channel and the recommendations from here. We just recently bought sleeping gods (our first story based board game) over ark nova, partially due to the rankings here and we were just blown away by how fun sleeping gods was! Every time we've played, we've shot way past bed time just because its so fun and we lose track of the time. Great great recommendations. Looking forward to more content!

Great video guys, love Dune Imperium and Eclipse Second Dawn. Tried Spirit Island and Nemesis at least 5 times, but to be honest hated both games and sold them both. But each to there own. Keep the videos coming, enjoy watching them.

Spirit Island is also my top 1 of all time by a fair margin. Jagged Earth really pushed this game to an infinite replay value for me. It was a great game before, now it's just unfair how good it is. Probably played over 300 games by now, with varied amount of players (played mostly solo and 3p... but I also have a few 6 players games done!). True solo, two handed, even three handed, this game just gets it. All the possible spirits combos, the powers you get, the events, the faction you're fighting... there's just so much replay it's never the same. And the modular difficulty really keeps it fresh and challenging every single time. Dune Imperium has to be one of those game I got only recently but climbed all the way up too. Same with Sleeping Gods actually ! But I still have a lot of trouble making a clear "top 10" because it depends a lot on criteria. Some games are just experiences that could be top 10 (Tainted Grail, King's Dilemma, Cloudspire, Arkham Horror: TCG...), but I feel like their replay is either low (TG, CS, AH:TCG...) or inexistant. Like, Tainted Grail is by far my favorite board gaming experience. But I still consider Spirit Island my #1. And funny enough I have no issues dying in 7th Continent. What I hate is the crazy amount of grinding for food there is. You're literally running from hunting spot to hunting spot. In my latest play I introduced a little houserule I found on the web that is simply to make food restore 1.5x the amount they do. Feels much better. Still a little grindy and doesn't just remove the urgent need to get food, but a little more tolerable.

Great lists! Dune: Imperium has SHOT up my list too! It is always such a tight game, my group loves it. I really want to try some of the others on your lists, especially LOTR: LCG. But, I'm already invested in Arkham Horror and Marvel Champions...I don't know that it would be wise to jump into another LCG 😅

Three LCG's might be tough to manage :D To be fair LOTR is an older version of both of them, so we would suggest just going with it if you really enjoy the theme, because mechanism wise it won't bring anything really new to the table.

A great top 10! First two are awesome solo games as well, you usually play them as such or tend to go with more players?

@@BoardGameHangover Almost always with 2-3 players. I play Mage Knight sometimes solon in TTS, as it takes care of so much of the upkeep that the needs. It is a long session with these games, no doubt about that, but my groups certainly thinks it's worth the investment. We all love the tactical card play in Mage Knight, Spirit Island and Gloomhaven, that aspect envokes the same kind of mental puzzle that we are all very much into.

Mage Knight was so my kind of game in theory, but fell completely flat in practice. The ridiculous amounts of down time while waiting for people to have their turns, the fact that nobody really cares what the other players are doing. Maybe it's different if you know the game really well, but for me it was definitely just a multiplayer solitaire experience and an extremely fiddly one at that. And what little player interaction there was, PvP, stealing other player's locations etc, were more irritating than fun. Not to mention the point salad euro-style scoring system at the end of the game feels way too complicated, and irrelevant to the rest of the game and the joys of adventuring. I'm planning to sell my copy soon. Compare that with Gloomhaven which I think could be the greatest game ever made and fixes all those problems and then some.

I'd say that betrayal at house on the hill (2nd edition) is at least a top 3 for me. There are so many different haunts that can happen that it makes it different every time. Same with the way the map is created by shuffling and placing tiles. Different event, item, and omen card keeps the game interesting all throughout too. The replayability is phenomenal for me and my mates in my opinion

When I saw you(Janis T.) like thematic and complex games, I was about to recommend Nemesis, Root, and Spirit Island, which are definitely my favorite games. Now I'm glad you have 2 out of 3 that high 😁 PS. Play S.Island with Jagged Earth, it will surely make it stay in your top 3 for a really long time. 😊 PPS. Now Im quite convinced to back Sleeping Gods KS. And try Kings Dilmena with my friends.

Ack I had Dune Imperium but sold it for a profit before opening/playing it because we only play 2 player (unless with our little kids) and I just thought it thus wasn’t for us. I’m sure the occasional 2 player is okay but what if you only play 2 player? (I wasn’t into the theme or art particularly either. Scythe works great for us, though.) Great video!

It's actually pretty good with two players (Best with 3 or 4) and the game is great even if you don't know anything about Dune.

JT how would you compare LOTR and GOT card games? And Arkham Horror card game vs GOT.? I am a GOT fan love the world, but also considering AH because you guys recommended it.

The major difference is that LOTR is a cooperative game while GOT is 1vs1 battle. And both of those are a lot more mechanical games where AH adds a lot of storytelling to the game and it feels more like a board game than a card game. You play scenarios in order and how you finished the previous one will directly impact your next one. It's more polished for sure.

Eldritch Horror is great, I just wish the quests weren't so repetitive and don't really match the theme. Like 80% of the quests are 'put 4 clue tokens on this space' yaaaawn. Compared with the super cool spells and items etc that's one element of the game that feels lazy to me.

It depends if you are asking for a single session or the whole campaign. Longest single session is for This War of Mine, shortest would be Robin Hood. Shortest campaign would be Destinies and longest would be Sleeping Gods.

Interesting... What made you think that? No company has ever payed us for anything. Some have sent us review copies (as almost every reviewer ever), but even that's not the case for any of the games in this video. We just truly enjoy these games :)
