Completely agree. Penetration is way more important than cutting diameter. When the arrow stays in the animal it prolongs the time it takes for pneumothorax (lung collapse). When someone gets a puncture in their chest the #1 priority is to plug that hole not because of blood loss but because that hole acts like a one way valve and collapses your lungs.

Good point to make about short wide heads and angled shots that can ricochet off the animal if the side blade strikes before the point penetrates. The science of FOC is amazing. Many think that a heavy point is 150 grains, but to get FOC 19 percent or better, gonna have to pass the 200 gr mark on most set ups. Shooting a bare shaft with proper FOC is an amazing experience for those of us that have shot heavy shafts for years but relied on massive helical fletching to correct the improper point weight. Thanks for sharing.

The 3 blade Tuffhead has a real nice design. I shoot a similar head that always passes through. It's the Valkyrie Jag. There r some very good heads out there but when u put an arrow forward through the thoracic cavity the failure rate occurs on some. That's cuz of the arrow due to your broadhead trying to exit tight on the shoulder & the pivot point that exists in that scenario. When u talk about the wide axe style head in your diagram that pivot point in the 1st thing that comes to mind. With the Valkyrie Jag u get that Centerpin system that makes the arrow continue to go through no matter the impact u might incurr. When it comes to that system, the ease of using the head over & over again due to the double wheel sharpening system, edge retention & lack of ease for it to start penetration & to hold energy for the harder parts exiting I will use them over & over & might die with new heads in their case that I never get around to shooting.

Those are all great heads. None of them are 3:1 ratio but are all amazing. I agree more people should be shooting these traditional style heads. Great video. I’ve been a compound hunter for 25 years but also a recurve shooter for almost that long. I’m finally getting to the point I want to try to hunt with one of my recurves. Have a 40# Red Wing Hunter I shoot great out to 25 yards but concerned it doesn’t have the power for ethical kill. Also have a 47# Red Wing Hunter I’m planning use for deer but need to still work up to be confident in an ethical shot. Have a 60# Bear Kodiak Hunter as well which is a fantastic bow but wears me out quick and can’t hold for long if needed on a deer. So think I’ll stick with the 47# RWH. Finally looking into broadheads for this bow to practice this summer to be ready for the fall. Shooting 2117s and looking for 150-200gr head. Shame Magnus tops out at 150gr. Wish they made a steel ferrule version. All tuffheads are way over 200gr.

Any of those bows will kill deer perfectly well! Lots of great heads out there in the 150 to 200 grain range. Check out 3 rivers archery. you can always customize the weights by going with a glue on head and using aluminum, or steel adapters as they come in various weights. also available on 3 rivers archery.

@@tradbowpodcast Thanks for the reply! I'm familiar with 3Rivers. They are great. Actually ordered some 100gr brass inserts for my 2117s as well as their heavy fieldpoint test kit to play with. Using their dynamic spine calculator a lot playing with different theoretical setups. Spent all weekend shooting different weights through the chronograph and playing with my strike-plate thickness to get them to bare shaft tune. Found just the 200gr on a standard 2117 insert to be the best out of my 47# RWH. I'm getting 155fps which is only 32 KE and 0.417 momentum. Seems low which leads me to think I need to stick with a 3:1 2-blade design. I'm probably overthinking the broadhead thing. I have some 125gr Magnus buzzcuts with the bleeders I used a few years back with my compound. Flew great and good wound channels but found I don't like aluminum ferrules for my compound. Bent a Magnus as well as a few 125gr 4-blade Muzzy's. Not sure if it was in the deer or hitting the ground behind them that did it. But that's coming out of a compound just about double the power of the recurve so they may be plenty strong enough for the recurve. Switched to slick-tricks for my compound and sold on the steel ferrules now. No more bending but I want to go to a cut on contact. I'm now looking into the Iron Wills for my compound when the 200gr Solid Wides come out. Should be the last broadhead I ever need for the compound. Figure that's too wide of a cut plus the bleeders for the recurve though. Top ones I'm looking at for the recurve are the Kudu Contour, Cutthroat, the Grizzlystick Samurai, and the Iron Will standard 2-blade. The Samurai is the closest thing I've found in the 3:1 that I think will fit my setup. Or I could just use the 125gr Buzzcuts I have in front of the 100gr brass insert but not sure if the bleeders would inhibit penetration.

@@bdubs1010 you will be just fine with any of those heads! I have never shot a bow theu a chrono but I bet with my 720 grain arrows and my short draw (less power stroke) I bet I'm only shooting my arrows at 140-150 fps (again I'm guessing) and I shoot a huge 1.5 wife head and blow right thru deer hogs bear etc.

I shoot northern mist longbows. Best longbows I have ever shot. If you are new to traditional archery or want to try it. A samik sage recurve is a great option as it's a solid bow for a super low price of 140 bucks and you can get extra or heavier limbs for 70 bucks. I did a review on the samik sage if you search it on my channel. I have also done reviews of my northern mist bows. There are a ton of great bows out there. Would be great if you could make it to a traditional bow event or shokt in your area and try some bows out in person to find what you like best. But its probably harder to find a bad bow then it is to find a great one. They are all make exceptionally well these days.

You put out some great information and don’t get crazy technical so it’s really easy to pick up. My question is rather than using a “traditional head” could you add the extra weight with a insert and shoot say a fixed blade like a G5 Montec
@tradbowpodcast
@tradbowpodcast 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! You sure could.changing to a heavier insert would increase your forward of center weight greatly improving your penetration and arrow flight. However when you increase front end weight you will soften the arrow spine and might need to go to a stiffer shaft. Lots of variables to that though and not simple rule as to how much weight you could add before having to change shafts. Have to experiment and test. You could also cut the shaft shorter if you arrows are long enough to give you stiffer spine. You can also add an aluminum footing over the carbon and leave that footing say 2.t inches long to reduce the flexible length of shaft increasing spine stiffness.

I shot one deer with a G5 Montec. I didn't like the vented blade design but that's not what failed. The buck was old & past his prime in antlers but had a big body. His leg near the exit wound on the chest on a broadside shot was positioned about 3 inches back from where it needed to be. That created a bad place for that broadhead to exit. He ended up running more cuz of that & fell on his side. I had a 125 grain insert but the arrow broke right behind that insert. ➕️ the very end of the tip was bent. So I got the deer & had a broken arrow & a broadhead that lodged & became ineffective lodged into that farside leg. I'm shooting about 10 pounds less now with a 30" draw & I don't have to bloodtrail or even wait for a perfect broadside shot which I will take. However I usually wait as long as I can on a deer to get close. As long as it isn't walking straight away from me I'm fine.

I have the same 27" draw length and want to go to an EFOC or UEFOC arrow build. What is your draw weight for your DL? Also, can you expand on your custom insert properties? Also, do you orient your two blade heads straight up vertically or straight horizontal on your arrows? I have alsways aligned my heads with my fletchings but with an EFOC build, does it even matter? Finally, you mention that you steer away from three blade heads because they are difficult to sharpen but the Bishop trinity series is a three blade that you can sharpen with a flat stone. I have personally not used this head but am considering it. Would like your thoughts on that.
@tradbowpodcast

My bows are 57# and 26" draw length. For more info on my custom I serts check out my arrow making video I did about a year and a half ago or go to tbwpodcast.com and click articles and I have a write up with pics on how I make them. I do orient my heads perpendicular to my bow string or "horizontal " it's all personal preference and i like then better that way than the one blade sticking up in my view. I don't like any 3 blade heads personally. Never did. Takes to long to sharpen and they don't fit in my quiver as well as I want since I run 6 arrows in my 5 arrow quiver. Most 3 blade heads can be sharpened on a flat stone or file 2 blades at a time. So that's not exclusive to the heads you mentioned. So if you like 3 blades or want to try them I think all of them can be sharpened the same.

They only have ah 1-1/8 cut so they penetrate decent for ah mechanical. The thing that people don't realize is that ah beginner bow hunter has alot on their plate. Getting use to hanging ah stand and focusing on learning everything they can about deer. The last thing a beginner wants to worry about is if there arrow is gonna fly right.thats why I go to the shop and have them paper tune my bow and then I'm good to go. BUT, all the members on tradgang.com are really into all this. go there. register (its free) and then in the shooting forum post your bow, bow weight, draw length, head weight, and how long you plan for your arrows to be (1 inch longer than draw length or 2 etc). One thing I noticed was very little difference in penetration between any of those weights. They all blow right thru most times. The arrows are what make the difference way more than the bow weight. I have shot 57# for the last 10 years and will until the day comes where I need to drop weight do to age or injury. I think a bow somewhere in the 50s is perfect

Just recently learned or relearned recently that if hunting spring turkey, in South Dakota the rules that might still be true as I am having hard time finding the rule saying one way or the other on spring turkey a rule in the past you had to use 3 blade or more for this season only. Then for fall turkey I know is it is same as deer, 2 blade minim or it is a type of spear blade and for all big game season one has double beveled as well as being fixed including fixing any mechanical type so it can't close and has to be fixed to full open, even a hybrid to be fully fixed type head for all big game. Now I get why 90% of people in South Dakota use a compound or lever bow over a traditional recurve/flat limb longbow for all hunting so the 3 or 4 blade for spring turkey has a better chance of going through the animal even if using a lighter weight bow at 30--35 pounds simply due to the FPS of those bows. I know they do not count bleader style broadheads the small blades as actual blades in South Dakota unless they are over 1/2 inch minimum. The bleader heads if 1/2 inch or smaller are considered if used alone without bigger 2 blade heads, are considered a small game head or barbs for big game at least that was what I kind of got when looking up this rule on size of broadhead. There is not much for rules on small game when hunting in South Dakota and could be honest they would not care if you are using a 10 pound broadhead on a coyote, badger or other larger small sized game which to me is wrong, as a 20--25 pound would be better as minimum at least, when using compound bows, with 25--30 pounds a better for minimum with a recurve/longbow.

@caseysmith544
@caseysmith544 2 жыл бұрын
@@tradbowpodcast Yep the more then 2 blade Broadhead with actually 4 was going to apply to hunting all big and large/dangerous game. I remember a guy who rain the head guy of Game Fish & park came in with a 6 blade 75 grain head in the 1 inch for one blade to blade and his main hunting 2 blade with too small of bleader heads to count as actual blades in 150 or 175 grain head. He showed the head people making the laws at Game Fish and Parks Making the laws appointed by the Governor one who is the reason we have 2 term limits and then the guy got out his Compound and shot both into his crossbow strong Black Hole style target at about 25--30 feet away. The 6 blade an experimental head made more for early super crossbow with swept back limbs did not go more then 1 inch into the foam and the other went almost through the target with tip messing up the wall. Well the law maker people backed off and made the law so it was only 3 (not sure it that stands) for Spring Turky, so most people shoot either 3 or 4 blade for hunting big game and large/dangerous game as well if they hunt bow in spring turkey. Also South Dakota is one of the harder states to hunt without a compound or lever bow for hunting due to distance but it is not impossible. I have seen a guy with one of those Martin branded takedown recurve bows that use a compound style riser get a deer without a sight, he did however have a small compound style Stabilizer that was more of a counterbalance and vibration dampening device. I only know since y dad worked for South Dakota Game Fish & parks in Game stuff for 10 years before quitting due to who became the new head guy after the other finally retired in the late age retirement of 70.
