Yes! Honestly, most of these pens are pretty inexpensive. I'd say the pentel touch one of my favorites and are around $15 for a box of $12, but if you can find them in stores I think they are just a couple of dollars. Of course, it depends on where you live and what's available to you, but finding pens in stores in single packs usually end up being super inexpensive. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

windsor and newton brushmarkers are NOT for calligraphy or hand lettering, just in case anyone was wondering what they're for. they're like copic markers or promarkers and are specifically designed for artists - as in, for colouring and blending. just in case anyone thought they were rubbishy pens that don't do what they're supposed to do - they were never made for doing anything like this.
@HowtoHandLetter7 жыл бұрын
That might be true of the winsor and newton regular brush markers, but these are the w&n watercolor markers and they are amazing for handlettering (similar to the ecoline ones - lots of calligraphers love both). Most brush pens probably weren't created for brush lettering (like crayolas, round brushes + watercolor, etc) but we still use a lot of them because they work well for us. (Though I agree about the regular ones, they feel like copics and I don't like either for lettering).
@veronicaproctor1847 жыл бұрын
sorry, i think i've been misread. i wasn't talking about the watercolour markers, they look fine for calligraphy. i was referring solely to the others just in case people thought they were made for calligraphy but just sucked, because they weren't made with this in mind and are very good at what they're supposed to do. but yes, i'm sure there are some that weren't made for it that work just fine for calligraphy because they have the proper brush tip, but i wasn't really referring to them? just saying that w&n brush markers do actually have a use.
@rachaelb91646 жыл бұрын
Yeah the alcohol markers are awesome for artwork but way too “inky” for lettering. I tried mine just for the fun of it and couldn’t get decent upstrokes because the color was too saturated... bled everywhere. I was bummed. I spend way too much money on pens lol.

I'm a Faber castell fan. There are fairly new SB, i.e. soft brush, brush pens and regular firmer Brush pens, more for sketch work, fine details, coloring, Zentangle art and the like. Sakura makes a brush trio set that is similar to the tombow duo mentioned here, but I think sakura is permanent ink (as is Faber castell), and tombow makes a dual point brush pen that is also permanent. I've only seen it at Texas art supply. The brushables by zig (kuretake) are permanent and useful with koi or tombow dual color brush markers for layering (similar to using derwent inktense pencils first and adding prismacolors or watercolor pencils later). prismacolors brush pens are firmer than sakura brush pens and both are useful for different reasons...as I've found one pen does not do everything, although....the pentell touch pens are my latest investment...

I’ve been noticing younger people seem to hold their pens much differently from the way I was taught in school. You hold your pens between three fingers, while I was taught to hold a pen between two (pointer and thumb) fingers. Were you not taught penmanship in school? I’m just curious. Very helpful video, thank you. 😊
@HowtoHandLetter2 жыл бұрын
Hello! That's a great question! Yes, I was probably taught the "correct" way in elementary school and sometimes I do hold it differently (typically when I'm writing in a more slanted style), but this is just what's most comfortable to me so I tend to revert back to it while writing. I have found that it's very common with lots of hand lettering artists to hold it this way, so I'm not sure if maybe it's something about using a brush pen? But there is actually a name for this type of grip (I just can't remember which one it is!). Thanks for watching!

They are really great! They have beautiful, vibrant colors and really have a nice gradient. But I do find that a lot of people get frustrated with them for 2 main reasons: the tips are really long and they're also really flexible. This is part of what makes them a great pen, but it also makes it a bit harder to control when you're first learning. I started with them, but then went back and tried a few others (the pentel touch pens, the metallic fudebiyori & the crayolas) and found it easier to get a hang of it with those, then went back to tombows!
@charlenejo24906 жыл бұрын

It's so weird! People consistently comment that they have the same issue with the black one - so it must be a manufacturing issue! One thing I figured out with these pens is that the tip is dual ended (so when one side frays you can pull it out and flip it over!) so you can wiggle the black tip out a little bit to be the same size as the colorful ones! Maybe that'll help a little bit! Thanks for watching!

Lisa K I have, the soft brush one acts rather similar to the Windsor and newton brush markers and wants to do full on sideways rather that letting you have control, the normal ones are better for lettering and work pretty well. A plus side of the Fabre Castelle pens is that when the nib frays you can take it out, turn it around and (as long as it’s not dried out) it will work like new.
