I love this car, it has just under 33,000 miles now. Runs really well, lovely engine, fun to drive. Very reliable, never let me down, starts every time. Done 1,000 miles in a weekend once, never skipped a beat. Nice to hear you have good memories! Great little cars. I've had the car nearly three years myself and only saw one other on the road in the UK since. I will do an update video at some point.

give it another 50 years, it will be one of beauty classic car with full spec sedan. i just repaint and refurbished my saga Iswara 1997 after 22 years serving. Not like there are no better car to buy, but iswara had a sentimental memories for me.

Had one of these, the emerald spec ran it for 5 years went through mot every year for peanuts outlay . Bought for £450 sold £150 Also had the mitsubishi Lancer as well

Bought a Proton Aeroback with sunroof in 1996 in Torquay for 800 pounds, and used it till october 2000. Used it in Exeter where I studied. Travelled with it to Dartmouth, and as far as Lands End/ Penzance/ St Ives, Glasgow and to Disney land Paris via Dover > Calais. I left it to the Exeter City Council in late 2000 for it to be disposed. Love it so much while my colleagues went for Mercedes, I stick to Proton.

I learned to drive in one of those!I wasn't disappointed apart from the time I stopped for my mum to go to Somerfield that shows how long ago it was! The car wouldn't start after she got her shopping , the AA guy couldn't get it started either so it had to be transported back to my mum's house! It turned out the esu was knackered so my mum scrapped it!

If you can't afford or find an old Mitsubishi Colt or Lancer in budget then these cars are an awesome alternative as they are basically a bit of both cobbled together. They are easy to keep going and I believe parts are still made in Malaysia pretty cheaply. It's a greatly under-appreciated shed.

Yes I still have it, just needs an MOT. I'm waiting for a metal fuel cap from Malaysia which is taking forever! The original fuel filler pipe had to be replaced due to corrosion, that one used a plastic screw on cap. Managed to get hold of a new original fuel filler pipe from someone which has now been fitted but it requires a metal cap! Very frustrating. I've literally not seen one on the road during my ownership, they are practically extinct over here. Just over 27,000 miles now, still amazes me how fun these are to drive, little tin can with a lively engine. I'll do an update video at some point when its got an MOT again.

You could say that but it's based on the Mitsubishi Colt from the 1980s so it wasn't modern in 1996 at all. Some people will know where i'm coming from, cars today (cheap ones) all the same, no character, too many sensors etc, throw away like a washing machine. Clearly these were built to last, I've had no problems really and just done 800 journey in it. You'll always be able to fix this cheap as long as it doesn't rust away.

Ahh yes I understand :-) Yes totally agree, this was the cheapest car in the UK at the time. Now I have literally not seen another one on the road in the UK since buying because people see it as a joke. As I say in the video it was nearly scrapped! Would of been such a waste as I've now done about 12,000 miles in it, works perfectly. Just people of the looks and because it's called a Proton people wouldn't be seen dead in it over here. Most obviously like to have an image on the road, don't get me wrong it's nice to have a decent modern car but these days in the UK it's all fake on finance etc. But yeah this is a very honest car, fun and reliable. Only let down is safety aspect I guess but that's the risk you take when driving an old tin can with no air bags or abs etc!

Knew a guy who ran one as a minicab up to 330k miles with no engine work needed. He sold it to a mate who carried on using it as a taxi and he replaced with a newer one - these cars are bulletproof for the motorist on a budget

You can modify this car with your own. This engine if you want to keep 4G15 original or swap into 4G63T or 4G93 if you do some modifications.......Muffler, manifold and pipe exhaust also you can do from aftermarket parts😊😊😊

You won't regret it ! I've done 6,000 miles in her since this video. Will do an update soon, so much fun and so much character. Lovely engine which is surprisingly nippy for a 1.5! I've had other cars with a much higher spec etc but this little Proton somehow has given me more smiles than any of them. Just done 1,000 miles in her this week on motorway, pretty much flat out all the way, very economical too ! I really do love it.

I think it's going to be off the road now for the near future I have a feeling this car may be the death of me if I keep it on the road. Exhaust has completely fallen off now, it's getting rusty and engine is leaking quite bad from rocker cover even after replacing it. It has served me well though and I will keep it still so it isn't scrapped.
