MaXpeedingRods just came out with ball bearing turbos! They are essentially just a Garrett GT series design, but with some nice added features. They have the forged billet compressor wheel, a lighter and allegedly higher quality compressor housing, a stainless turbine housing with V-band connections, an upgraded alloy turbine wheel, and allegedly upgraded piston rings. I did a tear down and I was fairly impressed. They are a bit over $600, so pricey for a budget option, but you can also get a 10% off discount anytime which makes them slightly more attractive. I agree with you that it is worth buying MXR over exactly comparable products for the support from the company, which at least does exist! I also think their billet wheels in general actually do have different geometry from the cast Wheels. While the blades have generally the same profile, the nose and overall profile of the center section is much thinner, allowing for a lot more airflow. I do think Pulsar is a generally attractive option, and this brings MXR up closer to their level. I will say as soon as you start getting closer to $1,000 a Borg Warner starts making a lot more sense, even if it's journal bearing. If you get closer to $2,000-3,000 the Borg Warner EFR series are the best period, though limited in max size. Still, with a coupon, hard to argue with a $100 turbo from MXR! Great video. :)

@@throttlebuddies0 Yeah that's the dilemma! So far they have a GT2871, GT3071, and GT3076. I'm sure they'll do a GT3582 eventually. They end up coming in just under the typical Pulsar price with arguably comparable features, but it would be impossible for me to say one is better since so far I have experience with neither. About to test my GT3071, but not exactly torture test it. Wish I had a dyno I'd love to compare them back to back.
@throttlebuddies07 ай бұрын
Issue is also no options for echausg housings. Kind of a dealbreaker in my opinion and the gt28 is just a journal bearing not even with a 360 degree thrust bearing and still is 600 bucks
@802Garage7 ай бұрын
@@throttlebuddies0 Agreed that the lack of turbine housing options limits the applications. Unless you meant something else. The new GT28 is a ball bearing turbo. You have to go to the Sport Turbo category and not the "For Sport Universal Turbo" section. It's there for $591 before coupon and lists all the same benefits as the two new GT30 ball bearing turbos, just without the V-band exhaust inlet and outlet. I'd have to have one in hand to verify all the claims, but no reason to doubt. Is it worth it for a GT28? Probably not. It's a very strange compressor trim they chose as well. Even smaller than Garrett's smallest 48 trim. Really meant for a smaller engine pushing a lot of boost. I'll def be trying to test one out down the road.

Something that most people don't think about is the zinc in the oil that used to be there to protect the flat tappet lifters is no longer in the oil. The zinc provides these type of turbo's a lot of lubrication for the thrust bearings as it would the flat tappet lifters. Problem is that you can only get it in good oils like Royal Purple or AMS Oil for performance engine's as most oils today have the zinc removed because most newer vehicles have rollerised lifters and rockers along with ballbearing turbo's eliminating the need for it most of the time.
@throttlebuddies021 күн бұрын
that heavily depends on the engine. a lot of engines still use journal bearing turbos, id even say most stock cars. even performance ones. VW on the 2.0 TSO only switched to ball bearing for the golf R. the GTI and pretty much any other smaller displacement VAG engine still use journal bearing same goes for other brands. as for the flat tapped lifters there are massive amounts of old engines running low quality oil and having no issues at all so i think this would only be an issue for high lift cams and high rpms, aswell as heavy springs so there would be more wear. as far as the bearings in cheap turbos are concerned, while it might help, the material they are made out of is just not as good as it could be.

I have a lot of experience with Td04s of various sizes and I wouldn't change them at all. Garrett is just catching up with the GBC series. It's not a coincidence that so many manufacturers from Porsche to McLaren use Td04s. Also, you failed to mention the cheap Chinese Td05s that are dominating the market right now , the max speeding rods Td05 is popular among MX-5s, possibly their best product right now because it proves to be reliable.
@throttlebuddies03 ай бұрын
the TD04s just dont have the top and also the response down low is worse. if you ever tuned a car with a GBC turbo, they are amazing in comparison. much better than a TD04. The GBC 20-300 spools the same as a 13t if not slightly better but has a much better top end.
@aftastosk60163 ай бұрын
@@throttlebuddies0 ha! Of course a GBC 20-300 will have more top end than a stock Td04L-13T. Because Td04Ls won't come with bigger than 0.41 a/r while the 20-300 is 0.55 a/r. Also you compare a miniature G- series billet compressor with a OEM cast 25-year old compressor, of course is going to make more power. But even a Mellett CHRA which is an exact copy of an original MHI is going to cost less than 300 (at least in Europe) so we are talking about different sector markets, really. Also, if you tuned the GBC 20-300 into a 1.6 lt engine it won't make much of a difference spool wise (simply because the size is too small anyway for the displacement) , even in 1.5 lt engines the switch from a Td04L to Td004HL doesn't affect the spool that much (it does, but not a lot) as experience shows with Colt CZTs and BMWs (3.0 lt twin turbos) but in Starlets/Glanzas it makes a real difference.
