Back in March 2017 you released a video about the Limiter effect. I suggested then that it would be useful to hear you talk about the compressor. Now, after this video, I would love to hear how the limiter and the compressor fit in your overall workflow.

Very helpful, thanks! 😄 I noticed that after I did this that the audio is peaking at a few spots. Is it recommended to add a limiter after the compressor?

Got the same Question. I combined tone Compressor with additional effects and Audio is peaking. For that I put the Limiter at the End of the "Effectchain".

Hey Serge. Before you made the new compound clip, are those grey bars placeholders? I've used a compressor for the first time on my last video, and thought it improved the quality quite a lot. However, on the video I'm working on now, the compressor is amplifying some sounds I don't want i.e. me breathing in and out. Thoughts?

Thanks for this tutorial! My question: 1) With FCP's magnetic timeline paradigm there are no "explicit tracks". So the only way to apply an effect on a whole soundtrack is to group all the belonging clips into a compound clip first? 2) Or is there an alternative, such as to apply effects to all clips which have a specific audio role? 3) If a compound clip is the only way to apply audio for multiple clips at once, then I have one more question: If you have markers on your main timeline and group the main timeline A/V-clips into a compound clip markers placed on those clips are no longer accessible and also not available for export as chapter markers. a) Is there a way to expose the chapter markers of clips nested in a compound clip to the exported video file? b) If not, what is the proper workaround? b1) Select A/V-clips of main timeline, detach audio, then combine all audio clips into one compound clip. b2) Edit as usual. And towards the project end put the entire timeline into a compound clip so that the timeline then only contains a single main storyline with a A/V-compound-clip and only then apply audio FX and chapter markers? None of both scenarios is ideal in terms for last minute changes. I hope there's something better. If not then I will vary along these my known methods and their pros/cons depending on the project at hand.

Thank you, Serge, for your great tutorials! I've been searching for one feature in FCPX and couldn't find it. Maybe you mentioned it previously - I mean how can I quickly normalize the whole clip with multiple audio elements/tracks (music, maybe voice, sound FX etc.) just to be sure that the entire loudness of my project is within normal level - just before the final export from FCPX to KZbin? I mean not compressor, not limiter, but just overall normalization to -0,1 dB, for example, like it is done by one click in Audition or Premier! Thank you.

Serge I recently came across your stuff... and you have quickly become one of my favorites. Quick question, do you have a favorite third part compressor plugin? I love the Focusrite Red plugins, but they keep causing FCP to crash. The built-in plug-in is ok, but nothing compared to the smooth compression of Focusrite, Manley or tube tech.

Thanks! but you didn't do anything with the limiter. Do you recommend the limiter cut off anything above 0db so it prevents clipping? i have a podcast host who frequently goes from very quiet to loud. very tricky. 2. also, do you have any video about reducing background noise without it making voices sound weird. I've tried the denoise but premieres denoise effect works way better. And, I've tried the autogate, but that also sound unnatural. thanx.

Thank you very much, Serge! I have been using the compressor for some time now but never understood what I was doing. Your five minutes took me 20 to digest and fully understand (and take notes) so now I am able to put it to good use: thanks! Question: in your example the audio becomes WAY better. Is the difference greater when using a better microphone?
@JohnDennery2 жыл бұрын
Just going to guess that his audio levels were very carefully checked and recorded, which made the post-processing much easier. I'm editing a project where the clips are all different volumes and the subjects are at various distances from the mic so it didn't become quite as smooth as his here, but these tips definitely got it sounding much better!
