I’ve been trainspotting at Eastleigh for many years and it’s a great place to view a wide range of freight trains close up.
This trip was the best day ever with a constant parade of colourful locos from the different freight operators.
Best for me was the recently restored Class 33 which I would’ve seen here over 40 years ago!
Also see the before and after transformation of the 360 with the a rare DRS 57 at the sharp end - look out for the fluttering masking tape on the repainted unit which the depot staff had forgotten to remove!
Hope you enjoy the video - great to see so many other enthusiasts out that day- can you spot yourself??

Superb! I did my Crompton Diesel Loco Training on D6515 later 33 012 in 1965 when i passed my Drivers Exam though SR MPD Policy was to train you up on the EMU,s (Juicers) first at Eastleigh. Ah Memories😇😄😁

Pleased to hear the video brought back some great memories. As a ‘Southern Spotter’ we loved the cromptons and they were always kept in great nick by Eastleigh. Always amazed me when I went to Reading and cabbed locos from other regions- the 31s and 50s from Bristol Bath Rd in particular were total oil stained wrecks, I used to wonder why they didn’t always break down! I hope you’re still keeping an interest in the current scene - there seems to be more freight than ever but I do miss proper slam door trains!

I lived right by the North Kent line in the late 60s and early 70s and loved the sound of the 33. proper growler.

I remember visiting the area in the late 70s to try and see the narrow bodied 33/2s - they worked a lot of coal trains in those days. Copped 3 of them and was delighted- not many coal trains these days!!

GB Railfreight’s locomotives generally seem to be the cleanest with Colas Rail’s most often the filthiest .

Hi Kenneth, I think you are right- it reminds me of BR days with the big difference between depots - Eastleigh & Stratford always kept their locos in good external condition whilst Bristol Bath Road and Gateshead never cleaned their locos!

Hi Matt, it’s an excellent day out as you never know what’s going to appear next from the Works…plus GBRF have some great liveries. Certainly different from the blue 33s, 47s and 73s of 40 years ago!

I'm in the States and I'm jealous that British rail does not or can not, due to low bridges and tunnels, run 'double stack' freight. I never liked the look of our double stacks here, the loads towering over the locomotives.. Brit trains still look like trains, and not rolling dumpsters...Some beautiful stuff in this video !
@NedPooleD818
@NedPooleD818 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark, pleased to hear that a viewer from across the Atlantic has enjoyed the video - most of our modern locos come from there these days! We certainly couldn’t do double stack here - the larger single containers only just get under our bridges! Network Rail has recently completed a scheme to lengthen sidings and loops to allow 775m long container trains- how does this compare to trains in the States?? We all love watching the Railcams - Sante Fe junction, Horsehoe, La Grange etc but the freight isn’t as frequent as here:-)

@@NedPooleD818I reckon with the number doing the rounds, just about every heritage railway will have at least one or two 66s years down the line. As you said though, certainly a good range of liveries - think my favourite that I've seen on one is probably the Belmont Royal Scotsman burgundy, or the classic BR green with late crest on 'Evening Star'
@NedPooleD818
@NedPooleD818 Жыл бұрын
@@joelwatkins Evening Star is definitely my fave and I’ve bought a model of it even though I’ve no track to run it on! I’ve seen the purple pink Jubilee one a couple of times now (must upload the video) but wish it had proper cast numberplates….it’s being repainted soon I think. Hopefully some will be preserved but they will never be as exciting as a 33 or 50:-))
