How to block a punch in a street fight requires little effort, just the ability to generate power over a short distance. This week we discuss the how to stop a big swinging heavy haymaker punch from a bigger or stronger attacker in a street fight. #selfdefense #martialarts
The best way to defend against a heavy punch is not to block the punch, but to attack the arm. We discuss the simple science behind how and why this works so well, highlighting a small detail in where to hit the arm in order to stop it dead in the air.

Absolutely fan of this defense. My Hands near to the head gave me a lot of discussions in different trainings... but after showing how it works for me, they didnt ask again...But in my experience while testing, for someone with thin arms might not work that well. Can, but its different.

Really interesting stuff. I can actually see a blend of krav maga and wing chun principles here - that forward movement and simultaneous striking against a circular attack is very similar to the 360 defence and bursting used in krav maga, whereas the trapping of the arms is very much a wing chun principle. Keep up the great work!

@@DefenceLabDeutschland Yes, you are correct. Afterall, Master Yip Man could use Wing Chun effectively on the street and he accepted many challenges from fighters from other Kung Fu schools! Nowadays, very few Wing Chun "masters" can use their martial art effectively in a real fight! Their training focuses on forms (kata) and there is no free sparring or in dealing with a resisting attacker!

In Krav Maga we use the 360 defense which is indeed a defense but like was shown you attack the strike and then counter with a combative in turn closing the distance to initiate more attacks that are quick and affective. I love watching these videos. I incorporate them in my training. Good stuff

I have been a good follower of Fight Science. At times, when I get involved particularly in a road rage, I felt it is not advisable to carry on with a fight even if he is nearby beside my driver's door though he kept on banging my door and windshield with punches and kicks. It's hardly way to defend yourself when you're inside the car. Lessons I learned from it - 1. Why do I have to put a fight when you become so defenseless to move about unless the aggressor had let you to come out and give you an open space for a chance to fight. Though, I won thru a 3-4 punches and got him knocked-out. Until I came to realized that I shouldn't done it in the 1st place because I didn't gained anything from it. Pity and guilt was there in me where he got unconscious for almost 8 minutes. I thought I had killed him with a punch on his throat. He was only relieved when I poured 1 liter of water on his face with some aid of resuscitation despite of his absence of mouthwash. Yuk! The police saw everything of what had transpired and later he paid dearly for the damages he had made on my car despite of being me knocking him out. Sometimes it is highly needing to be mentally alert present at all times ... being aware of the surroundings and everything. Patience, Patience Is Still Plays a Major Role In Any Kinds of Fights or Verbal Arguments Yet It Is The Best Defense Among Others. I am really felt sorry of what had happened. I didn't got over with a Valor Medal But Only With Guilt. Be It Their Fault or Mine, I Become To Learn To Say 'I Am Sorry" and Settle for Compromise Arrangement. Again, Why One Do For A Fight ? Does it has something to do with "Pride" ? Stay Being In A Low Profile Stance Even If You Know All Things About Arts of Self-Defense But Remain To Stay Calm And Be Keen With His Movements Unless He Is Armed. Diplomacy is better than putting yourself into heights of arguments. Patience and Being Sorry to cool down everything. Stay Safe. More Power. From the Philippines. 😍🇵🇭😍🇵🇭😍🇵🇭

@MrOgun
@MrOgun 2 жыл бұрын
The answer is yes and no. First, you have to train this until it’s second nature. 2nd… you have to see it coming. With haymakers it’s easy. You see them a mile away. But with someone who actually trained… it won’t work because their most like not going to be throwing haymakers. A problem with these videos is they start from a point of you knowing exactly what the attacker is going to do. But I’ve been in enough fights to know… both before and after my training to understand that it could work… if you can see it coming and can react without thinking. Better yet… don’t wait for it to come.

I immediately start leading chin first, and throwing the most telegraphed, over swinging, hooks as hard and fast as I can muster. I’ve had to ask my friends later what actually happened during fistfights, because I can hear the smacks of punches landing, and hear the mob of drunkards go “Ohhh!”, but that’s about it, until I see my face later. Do you guys have any advice for managing an adrenaline dump, or just blind rage, when somebody says the magic words “What are YOU gonna do about it?”, or whatever utterly disrespectful shit flips your physical violence switch…

Good call either way. Even without drugs and alcohol being a factor my philosophy is look to try to end things as fast as possible. The majority of people running around have limitations, know yours. I only really condone physical violence as a means to meet physical violence. I’m a fat bastard and have no stamina. The longer we go the more I’m a liability to myself. Why would I willfully engage in a “fair” combat scenario that’ll lead me to sucking wind in 60 seconds and open me to possible death? Nah man I’m grabbing full hands of hair, coat, hoodie etc. going for eyes, groins, throats, joints. If you’re a big heavy guy use your weight. Anything you have to do to protect yourself. I had a messed up experience at a gas pump last year where this panhandler got super aggressive and tried putting his hand in my pocket after being told no about 5 times, things went 0-60 in the blink of an eye. He was like half my weight so I grabbed his jacket and swung his ass in a 360 and whipped him into the pole next to the pump and held him in a back mount until the cops showed up. He tried to throw me a few times so I eye gouged him. I didn’t want to injure the guy I just wanted him to stop so I did painful shit to obtain submission. The moral of the story is fights are rarely pugilistic, queensbury ruled punching matches, end it with whatever means you have to end it fast. Sometimes that means doing brutal shit to have the upper hand.

Here in Florida, sometimes _pre-emptive_ strikes land you in jail. Depends on the eye witnesses who see it from a distance and what they tell the cops. There are many nerve centers in the armpits and Ninjitsu and Jujitsu masters often hit these with their thumbs, fingertips or single knuckle fists! Their hands are heavily conditioned (iron hand conditioning) to avoid injuring their own hands when hitting. Hard strikes to these nerves in the armpits cause extreme pain and temporary paralysis of the arm! The techniques of attacking the vital points is known as Atemi in Jujitsu, Aikijutsu and in Taijutsu.

The arm pit has a major artery. If you slice an attacker there with a knife then they will bleed to death like a pig. Here in Florida, we legally open-carry any size knife, even a sword if we wanted to. However, most areas of the state we can't open-carry our guns, those have to be concealed. 🙄

Please remember, this stuff MIGHT work only against an untrained fighter. Still better than not knowing a thing.

Awesome video and thanks for explaining it and showing it so well. Its maybe also worth mentioning that some of the signs of aggressions to be aware of if we analyze that clip u showed its the tensed up person to the left. His fists are already squeezed up lip squeezed (sign of possible anger). Those body language are good to know and in that case he (the guy to the right) should be extra careful. Just my 2 cent advice :)

Most people do not know how to fight very close up. Closing the gap quickly confuses them. However, you have to know what to do once inside. Also different body types are better at different things. Smaller, shorter reach, learn to fight inside & up close. Tall with long arms, keep your opponent away from you and beyond their reach and attack them there. Also, keep your hands up by your head when fighting to protect it.

Yes and no. It can work if you can see it coming and react. And if you get the proper response. But like you said… life is not choreographed… but the training does help with reaction time. This I know from experience

U make the most sense for me in reality of the streets. I always have problems defending! Im only 150 pounds & noticed in life that most people that have attacked me always want to take me to the ground witch I don't do well. I do well standing for my size but not on the ground. That's y I believe u most cause I need to get it over with quick before im grabbed. Thank u so much for your chering ✌🙏

FINALLY SOMEONE DESCRIBES THE ABSOLUTE BEST METHOD OF SELF DEFENSE. Well done brother. And you did it in a small and easy tutorial. Every other method is either too slow, too vulnerable, inefficient, or tries to look too cool.

Iv seen people they use a fist rather than inside arm ,same if I have to throw I'll use a fist, would this still work?? What do you think
@jamesroberts5450
@jamesroberts5450 2 жыл бұрын
@@williedesmond8201 sure fist is good, but Willie, your elbow is extremely hard hitting. So devastating to get hit in the face with an elbow/forearm. brake nose easily, brake jaw etc. Thanks for the question.

@@jamesroberts5450 I agree about how much damage an elbow would do your right ,I was asking about defensive from a straight right hand iv slipped one or 2 but have been caught by more ,I'm talking about in the street doe

@@williedesmond8201 good question. yes straight jabs are tough. I study Shaolin Kungfu, and they teach to "deflect then strike," much as this video teaches. so a straight jab: deflect it, grab it, dont dodge it, dodging is slow and requires too much energy. enter his space, deflect that jab or grab his arm, then strike back.

0:40 We use a similar block in the style I've been practising for 10 years now (southern tiger-mantis). We lock the arm out by straightening it for a stiffer block. If you really want to kill the arm, block with the outside of your left arm while simultaneously smashing the opponent's bicep with your right fist.

The old Okinawan Karate masters had heavily conditioned hands (iron hands) and their forearms and shins were hard and strong like iron rods! The blocks of Okinawan Karate incorporates strikes. Their saying is "Every block is a strike, and every strike is a block"! You hit whatever is offered to you. Whenever someone strikes you, he is offering his arm. Therefore you hit it! The pain will distract the attacker. You then immediately follow up with a barrage of strikes and kicks until he is completely down and out! Power always comes from the hips.
