Introduction
Here is our brand new list of the best digital pianos under $3,000. This list is focused on either portable or stationary digital pianos, with no synths, and is confined to instruments I have personal experience playing. All recommendations are based on my own personal experience.
Casio
PX-S7000
Purists might want to ignore aesthetics when talking about an instrument’s appeal, but the PX-S7000 looks really cool; the proportions and lines of the entire package, the stand, the instrument, the sturdy construction, and the choice of colour. As a piece of art, this really caught people’s attention and even made it into the Rob report.
As a musical instrument, and particularly for people focused on contemporary repertoire, this instrument is exceptional. The S7000 uses a nice compact key action which is great for space but not necessarily the best option for high-end classical players. The interface is intuitive and provides interesting ways to navigate and select the various acoustic and electric pianos.
The Casio Music Space app makes navigating the instrument much easier and is highly recommended.
Kawai
CN Series
Both instruments in the CN series make this list due to their proximity in musical pedigree and price point. They both include the RHIII triple sensor and escapement action, 40 watts of speaker amplification, multiple acoustic piano models rendered through the Harmonic Imaging engine that allows many editing options, and Bluetooth audio and MIDI.
The 301 has more onboard sounds than the 201, as well as two upward-facing tweeters with 360-degree diffusers. This is a significant sonic improvement over the CN39, and probably the best full-spectrum sonic acoustic playing experience of any piano on this list.
Roland
HP704
This HP model resembles an LX because of the inclusion of the PHA-50 action, an increase in amplification, and the addition of two more speakers. While the 704 may not have the same bass punch as a Kawai CN301, the detail and subtleness of the mids and upper-mids are exquisite.
The HP704 also includes the typical connectivity options including Bluetooth MIDI and audio, discrete line outs, and the most elegant cabinetry for a full-size home digital piano of any manufacturer.
Yamaha
CLP-735
Compared to the CLP-725, the 735 has an increase in the power and size of the speakers, three times the number of onboard sounds, a more robust processing engine, a more robust suite of resonance engines, a slightly taller cabinet, and an improved interface. While it’s equipped with a Bosendorfer sample set, the CFX sample really brings the instrument to life with lots of dynamism and top-end colour.
Honourable Mentions
Two honourable mentions include Yamaha’s YC-88 and Roland’s Fantom-08. These are honourable mentions because they don’t have built-in speakers and are considered synth stage pianos; however, many players who are pianists are using these instruments in the professional space because of their great sound and how fun they are to use.
The YC-88 has throwback aesthetics, look, and feel in terms of its user interface and a robust onboard action.
With Roland’s Fantom-08, getting 80% of a full Fantom for 50% of the price blows my mind. That’s why I do most of my gigging on it.

For strictly Piano playing and classical piano practice, I still would choose the Kawai CA401, or Yamaha CLP745 both are right on the line at $3,099 but you just cant get better than real wood keys unless you get an acoustic. And in the digital world, if you are looking for the touch and response of an acoustic piano with the convenience of digital, these are the way to go -even at a touch over $3K, they should have been mentioned. I’ve played on both baby grand and acoustic uprights and these are as close as you can get (without going into the higher end pricepoints) to the real thing and its very very close. The first time I compared my Kawai CA49/401 with my baby grand, I had to really think about where the differences were in feel, in kinetic and static weight, about pivot length, and stop depth, and give or flex. If your main concern is realistic key weight and feel and sturdy action, the $3K pricepoint with wood keys is a great value for the serious beginner or adult student.

I certainly agree with your sentiments on the CA49/CA401 models. They are incredible instruments for the money. The all-wooden key sticks of the GFC action is impressively authentic. These are excellent models for a serious student to learn/practice on if a digital piano is required over an acoustic piano.

Thanks for these videos. Although these short versions have their audience, I hope you will continue doing also longer videos where you can go into more depth. In particular may I suggest you do a comparison of silent systems? Living in a big European city, these are the only practical option when even considering an acoustic piano. For example a comparison of ATX3-L (in Kawai K15) vs ATX4 (in Kawai K200) vs SC3 and TC3 (in Yamaha’s pianos) would be interesting. Thanks

@@MerriamPianos Thanks for your prompt reply! And within these systems, one particular comparison you may want to consider is the ATX3-L in Kawai K15 vs the SC3 in Yamaha B1. I believe these are the lowest price points on both brands for acoustics with silent systems. Moreover the ATX3-L would appear to be a limited version of the ATX3, so maybe inferior to the SC3? But prices of both are very similar (Yamaha’s model being only 6% more expensive in this part of the world). Thanks again :)

The Casio looks and sounds really cool, but I cannot get used to this short pivot length.

That is fair. The lighter touch and shorter pivot lengths won't be for everyone, but the new Casio instruments are awesome pianos with a great combination of touch, tone, features, and aesthetics.

Hey! I’m looking to purchase my first piano and have set my eyes on the Roland fp-30x. A used Kawai CN-201 have just been listed at 200$ less than the FP-30x and I’m wondering if I should go for that instead. I’m contemplating, because I might wanna use the piano as a midi “controller” as well for the extra sounds that the FP-30x has to offer, but besides the extra sounds, the kawai seems to be an overall better piano? Apologies for the “noob” question, but I am new to this. Thanks!
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 12 күн бұрын
Hi there! Thank you kindly for the question! In my opinion, the CN201 is a step up from the FP30X in a few regards. Firstly, it has a far more powerful speaker system, which offers a fuller, richer sonic experience. It also has a higher-end tone engine in my opinion, which also helps augment the sonic experience. However, when it comes down to action, both the CN201 and FP30X offer wonderful playing experiences. The FP30X is a touch heavier and has a more pronounced let-off/escapement sensation. So, to that point, it would come down to a matter of personal preference.

A lot depends on where you live and global pricing. In Australia Casio and Yamaha tend to be more expensive than the UK and other regions. This video has Kawai CN series but Kawai for whatever reason is well priced in Oz. A CA 501 comes in at $3295 and a CA 401 at $2495.....(AUD)

It is a decision that every player has to make for themselves. Some players begin their journey on $50,000 grand pianos for instance. There are no specific rules or guidelines, but my word of advice is this: if budget permits and you can hear/feel the difference, it may be worth making the upgrade.

@@MerriamPianos Thank you MP. I bought the FP30X following Stu's recommendation and have been very happy with it through headphones, but I don't like the backfacing speakers for non headphone play. Apart from that, it does everything I need it to, and it feels pretty good, although some of the notes cut out prematurely. With no accessible stores, I depend upon reviews like yours to make buying decisions.

If you're mostly a classical / acoustic jazz player and primarily need a digi keyb for silent practice: get a Kawai VPC1 and Pianoteq and/or the VSL yamaha. Should still be under $3000 (at least it is here in Europe), provided you already have a decent computer and interface.

@MiezoT
@MiezoT Ай бұрын
@@DirtyMonster762 I don't know the es920. I played a lot of E-Pianos back when I needed one for silent practice. I just wanted a keyboard that is the least compromise regarding "feel like a real piano". The VPC1 won, the Kawao MP11 is about the same, but has internal sounds (and is more heavy and more expensive). It's not a real keyboard of course, but the only other option regarding feel for me was a NV5 or NV10, which are great, real mechanics etc., but also much more expensive. I use the VPC1 on headphones only, and in combination with Pianoteq and the VSL Yamaha grand. Not perfect, but great for pratice IMO.

Local dealer has: hp704 for 2000$ Lx5 for 3000$ I like both, but im not sure lx5 worth that extra money. Then he offered me kawai ca 701 for 2800$, but none kawai was in stock and i couldnt test the action. Is kawai really so amazing or should i be worried and take Roland?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 19 күн бұрын
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for the question. It really comes down to personal preference and subjectivity. The Roland HP704 and LX5 pianos will have a heavier, stiffer touch than the Kawai CA701, but all of these models have wonderful actions and tone engines. They simply offer a different musical experience. I would recommend comparing pianos in person before making a final decision if possible. With that said, you really can't go wrong with either of those Roland models. They're both quite wonderful and the PHA50 action is phenomenal! :)

I was told by a music store salesman (I'm in the UK) that the HP's are due to be replaced soon. I think we will see a variation on the Piano reality modelling that's in the new LX models. I play a HP702 every week for church worship. It's an amazing instrument. Though there's a few raw/brash notes that I just can't soften up to my liking - to left of middle C. But I really like Roland pianos, and also own a FP60X. Will almost certainly be buying a new HP or Clavanova for my house in the next year. Yamaha have just announced replacements for their CLP series (800). But cost is a major factor. The 735 mentioned in this video has been £2200 plus for a good while now, and just recently dropped down to around £1700. Basically Yamaha are significantly more expensive than equivalent Roland and Kawai, here in UK. Id be interested to Know why!
