Renji and Rukia never saw each other since her adoption because Renji didn’t think he would be able to properly do so if she’s a noble. For years he thought “once I’ll become a lieutenant I’ll finally talk to her again” and then he finally reached that goal, however at the time he was not able to meet with Rukia, even when his friends told him unofficial “you’re going to be appointed as a Lieutenant so you should go talk to her” he refused so that he could truly show her what he’s done when she’s back from her mission she went on that same day. The next time he saw her though it was when he was sent to capture her. When she was to be punished and then sent to death. The person he loved, the person he spent 50 years working towards just to talk to again as an equal in his eyes, to not view himself as far to presumptuous, to fearfully hide behind his greatest regret, to justify not telling her what was true to his heart. To justify that it wasn’t him who split them up for his own stupid idea even though they were a true family. “Light a fire to the fang that cannot be reached So that I do not have to see that star So that I do not slit this throat” Renji a stray dog, his regrets tied to Byakuya Kuchiki a star that he forever barks at yet never jumps towards to atone. A man who untied his only happiness to flaunt his claws to himself alone, barking at that star he cannot bear to look at. His past lit the fire to his fangs, that will never reach Byakuya In an attempt to hide his regret this star So that he does not slit his throat due to the pain of his actions that caused so much pain for him and Rukia. To ignore his own pain and what he did to the woman he loves, to his only family. Honestly I just love this part of the series so much, it’s the best part until “Goodbye Halcyon days” in the story
