I have been to that nursery about 10 years ago. The owners used to be Mr. and Mrs Schafin. I took a class on how to grow bananas. The class was at the Fruit and Spice Park, which is nearby the nursery. it was given by Mr. Schafin himself. At the end of the workshop, he took us to the nursery to show us around. It was such a great experience. From what I heard from others, the Going Bananas nursery used to be owned by a tomato expert called Tim Lassard. He used to grow all kinds of heirloom tomatoes. So it was basically a tomato nursery specialising in rare and high performance tomato varieties.

Yeah you mention only one variety of bananas on the shelf in the US it's the same here in Oz (cavendish) you sometimes see the odd ladyfinger but as you said later on it's the same with many fruits and veg eg tomatoes - bred for shelf life not taste and picked green for transportation before the fruits can develop the sugars. The only way to get back the old taste and nutrition is to grow your own if you can. Here in Oz we are required to register our banana plants with a licence to grow them if you don't you risk fines because the banana industry is so fickle with their one variety and "all the bananas in one basket" if disease breaks out millions will be lost. We grow our own bananas they're so much better than those chalky tasteless things in the supermarket. Cheers :)

Never grown bananas before and if you follow some simple growing instructions, they are really easy and fun. PS: Buy and use their specially formulated fertilizer and use as directed. Great fertilizer for general garden use too!

Zone 9 in central Calif., I am growing dwarf Namwa bananas that seem to thrive here. Winters are relatively warm, only reaching freezing 2 or 3 times. One of the pups I planted has flowered, and now has green bananas. I cut off the flower yesterday. I also fertilized with P and K. I water almost everyday. I'm glad to see that the bananas will, or might, plump up. Right now, the bananas are 4 sided with anglular ridges. Watching to see when a banana turns yellow, and then I'll harvest. I'm also watching to see if the mice start eating the fruit.

Funny thing happened when I was filming this video. I had to "hop a fence" to get the opening shot, since the Farm has a secure peremiter. After getting the shot, I was hopping the fence to get back in the farm when the owner saw me and he was quite displeased that I hopped the fence to get the opening shot instead of finding him to open the gate so I could get the shot.

I don’t know if I should buy a seedless banana plant or the seeded one, my heart tells me that the seeded one is much more healthier because it’s untouched by man and completely natural, plus it would make sense for it to have seeds so I can plant more? Not really sure how that works though because people take out the baby plants from the sides and plant it somewhere else so I guess it’s a win win?

I bet I could grow one in Texas. I may have to try that. It does get below 40 sometimes in winter but not often at all. I could take steps to protect it when it does get barely below 40 degrees. I am now wondering what the difference is, if any, between bananas and plantains. I guess I will look that up. We have a local chain here that has the regular bananas but also carries plantains. - Heidi
