Can you try making a series of charts & tables to explain the various connection modes, the benefits & limitations of each? It sounded like important functionality is disabled when using BT & VE network are used or was it just when & where you can change settings & sequence of connecting? The current connections combine each application with physical & low level protocols so it's harder to make them portable & universal. Having >5 competing standards complicates setup. I'm guessing the first solar charge controller added becomes master of all subsequent devices. I wish they could allow BT to be a backup link if hardwired networking (TCP/IP) fails & allows rerouting between the multiple methods of connection (needs similar application layer in the network stacks, emulation or a translation layer).

Power failure possible? What I was wondering: - If you do not have Victron chargers or the smart network is not used. - The batteries are full during the day. Will the BMS disconnect them, to prevent overcharging? If so... What would happen if your grid would fail? Is the BMS fast enough to turn on/ deliver power to the inverter, so that the inverter output to the house never has a hickup? (So computers keep running?)
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia Жыл бұрын
You always need a charge controller! You cannot use the BMS for charging your batteries. That can be fatal. The solar charge controller or grid charger is set to a specific voltage to charge your batteries to. If the charger fails, the BMS will protect the battery. So there is this 2-step safety function of both working together. But you should not rely on the BMS to do your daily charging.

I have two MPPT controllers and a SmartShunt all linked together with the VE Smart Network. However, each charge controller handles a separate PV array which are east and west which means that each array is always at a different voltage from the other. Will this still synchronise and work? I also have them all connected to a Cerbo GX so does one connection override the other? Thanks for your great videos.

If you have all panels facing one direction and no shading, you can use one controller. If you want some redundancy, get two controllers and split the array. I have 4 controllers, so if one fails or I need to shut down one side for maintenance, the system will still keep working.

The smartshunt says it delivers current and voltage sense. The chargecontrollers all state they are using current sense from the shunt. Nothing about voltage. Switching charging mode from bulk to absorb is all about voltage, isn't it? A little confusing. As they switch synchronously, it seems they read voltage too. They just don't tell us in the app.

Great Video Andy, I have the BMV-712 Smart In my system. I use a Raspberry Pie 4 & VE. Direct cable, connected to the BMV-712 Smart, streaming out data to my WIFI network as the Shunt/Chargers are located quite a distance away from the Router. This works perfectly on the VE. Smart Network. I do love the Victron MPPT Chargers (The Rolls-Royce of all MPPT Charges), BUT they are out of my $$. I use 2 Renogy Rover LI 60 amp MPPT charge controllers, with both Voltage SENSE wires connected to my 24V 400AH LifeP04 Lithium System. These sync very well together!. Andy, you've done a ton of things with solar and LifePo4 cells. After watching a re-watching I was able to understand what you were doing and the logic behind those "experiments." I have learned a lot and thank you. However, you have completely lost me with this DVCC. I don't think I have missed any of your videos but perhaps I missed the one where you told us why you chose to put this into your system. It just seems this device will override all the settings in you charge controllers. But why? We have them programmed to appropriately charge our batteries and everything was going fine. All of a sudden we have this DVCC (had to look it up). I just can't understand the need as long as you have your charge controllers and external chargers (if you have them) set correctly. You lost me, Andy.

Thanks a lot John. You've been a valid member of this channel for a long time. I appreciate all your comments and always looking forward to your input. I haven't done a full tutorial on DVCC yet because I cannot utilise it to it's full potential. It best works with Victron supported batteries and BMSes which I don't have. I mainly turned this on because I need to control my charge current somehow. With the new solar panels installed, there is just too much current coming in sometimes (up to 270A I have seen!) and I have not designed the battery and shelf for such high currents. Initially, I tried to throttle the solar charge controllers but that is a bad way of doing it. People kept suggesting to turn on DVCC and limit the current through this function which works like a treat. I explained it all in this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rompqp1jnZiHnJI

@@OffGridGarageAustralia Always good to hear from you Andy! You have been such an inspiration and help as I setup a small system at our remote cabin. The link you provided clarified everything for me. I must have missed that one. Watching the other video regarding the DVCC I kept saying to myself; can't he just limit current thru the CC? Your video answered that-----yes you can, it is just more efficient and convenient to use the DVCC feature. I didn't even know it was there or what DVCC stood for when I saw that video when it looked like it was messing everything up. My system is so small compared to yours I don't have to worry about too many amps from the CC but it is good to know it is there if I need it in the future. @@kevinmills5293 I would say it’s bc. there is no much sense, respectively kind of duplication of functionality when you use a battery sense + a smart shunt. The smart shunt covers all functionality the batt. sense provides and should be layout equally close to the battery, hence as accurate in voltage- & temp readings. In fact you could state the smart shunt being the “smarter” device than the battery sense. So I don’t really get the fact why you would have both in a (normal) system layout(?).
@kevinmills5293
@kevinmills5293 Жыл бұрын
@@Schoigter I added a BatterySense to my system because the Victron BMV does not have Temp monitoring. If you have a Smart Shunt, a NTC temp sensor can be bolted to the battery and connected to the Aux input on the shunt and the BatterySense would not be needed. The downside to the Smart Shunt reading the battery voltage is any voltage loss in the negative cable between the battery and the shunt will skew the battery voltage measurement. The BatterySense voltage measurement will not be skewed by system load.
