"film photographers" what a fucking retarded term. this "film is better" vs "digital is better" cult mentality is so embarrassing and useless. stop categorising photographers based on gearwhoring. associate photographers with their artwork not with the tools of their choice. it's like saying Typewriter Poets, Fountain pen Poets, Microsoft word Poets etc.

I fully disagree on that "generic russian camera" rate - specifically because of the lenses. You said you'd want to spend more and get into a full system. All those old East German and Russian cameras have M42 lenses! The biggest system! Also if the OM10 is Amazing then the single digit OMs should be in the God tier.
@someonewithsomename

don't know about m42 system, but I have 3 such lenses. One is legendary (not meaning it's good, just legendary), the rest are no names. All are kinda ok. But fully agree on ranking OM-1 as God tier. The same goes for Nikon F2 - the best 35mm film camera

You got to try out the trip 35 - it can be great for street photography on a sunny day. The f2.8 Zuiko lens is very sharp and once you get used to the zone focus, you can prefocus before lifting the camera to your eye - That's faster than any SLR or rangefinder. The glass around the lens is a selenium meter, therefore no batteries required. It's refeshingly simple.

I have two 500cms with 6 lenses from 40 distagon to 350 sonnar, the reason I stick with it is for the incredible glass, despite the shitty camera. The Praktica isn't actually a russian camera, it was manufactured by Pentacon in the eastern Germany, I own a bunch of them because they are pretty cheap here in Europe and they have overall pretty good build quality and sharp lens. However some of them are pretty heavy since they are mostly metal, they are pretty loud and some people may not like the square-ish design.

I know you said you didn’t like the Trip 35, BUT one of the best functions that I like about it is that is doesn’t need a battery. The thing around the lens is actually a solar powered light meter, which works very well. The zone focusing is hard to get used too, but the cameras lens can be very sharp if you find one in good condition. It’s not the best camera that’s for sure, but I don’t think it belongs in ‘NO’.

Prakticas were made in East Germany, not Russia! They are amazing cameras, and the lenses made for them are one of the best on the market! I conquer with Tom and Benjamin. Praktica camera's are part of the German photo legacy. The Praktica L is a pure basic system SLR and the 42 screw mount is a great worldwide used mount with beautiful lenses available. Made around Dresden, Meijer Optics Goerlitz is well known and produced great "bokeh monster" lenses, later known under the "Pentacon" brand when Germany was split up after WWII. Don't forget that besides Leica/Leitz also a lot of Praktica and Exacta camera's were copied by Russian camera and lens makers. After shooting fixed lens rangefinder camera's the Praktica L was my first system 35mm. SLR. I upgraded later to Olympus OM1 and OM2 because of size and weight, also fine camera's with its fine Zuiko lenses. In this digital age I still regularly use my film era Praktica TL , Olympus OM1 and my Mamiya C220 (one of the only system TLR 6x6 camera's). So I urge You to consider to try out a second-hand Praktica SLR from the post WWII Pentacon era with one of the Meijer Optics Goerlitz lenses (very cheap nowadays) and report back with your findings. Regards from the Netherlands.....

Agree 100%. I have an MTL3 and it has such advanced features which a lot of other cameras from this age did not have. It has split-screen and ground glass focusing, built-in light meter, depth-of-field preview button, it has the Praktica easy-load system, metal shutter curtain, tons of lenses available, excellent build quality (it's the Nokia 3310 of SLRs). I would pick my Praktica over the K1000 any day of the week.

Recently I've been compelled to keep a low-ISO daylight balanced film in one 35mm camera and a high-ISO tungsten balanced film in another. The two cameras are the OM-10 and the AE-1 and I would recommend them to anyone! But I'm compelled to expand my collection after watching this.

A note on the Praktica: I was given a Praktica MTL5 from a friend of mine, and it was my first camera after my Olympus on-10. After using a plethora of other cameras (Nikon f2, fm2, voigtlander bessa, Pentax spotmatic and P30t etc) the thing just keeps on working and does not want to die. I’m aware of the bad quality control of the GDR camera factories but I must have been lucky, I have taken some great photos with this camera. Whilst I have moved onto a new Nikon f2A and a Leica iii, I will always go back to the Praktica after a while, as it just works. I do acknowledge that it is a beginner camera though. One negative thing though... I can’t believe how loud the bloody shutter is.

My pentax Spotmatic is amazing. It's have an m42 mount, and the lens lineup for that is beyond god tier. BUT all m42 mount camera have this lineup. What's different is the TTL light meter. The guality, feel and the longevity of the body is amazing. If you want a REALLY cheap SLR, you can buy the Spotmatic. The K1000 is okay. Nothing wrong, just not as good, as the SP. I have a Yashica MG-1 rangefinder and it's amazing. Nothing special, just an easy to use street photography camera.

I liked the Spotmatic a lot, it’s got the best ergonomics. The wind on is amazing. ButI couldn’t get around the whole meter on/off situation though, it was just a bit awkward, so I went back to my Praktica MTL5.

I hope so, I just repaired my PoD, focus, light seals, and corroded battery compartment wire. I made a battery adapter from a toy camera film take up spool and fitted spring that works fine. I'm now waiting for my spanner to arrive so I can remove a micro crystal snowflake of fungus from the front lens element. It is an early version with round over/under indicators instead of arrows. Apart from the battery compartment issue, it looks like it and the leather case have been on a shelf since 1977. I hear the lens is tack sharp. I guess I'll find out, if I'm still around after the Coronavirus passes.

Dude what a crazy coincidence, I was going to ask you if you ever used a Canon TLb. It's also my first and current SLR camera. I'd like to know what kind of experience you had with it. (PS: my grandma owns an 80s SLR from Mamiya, are those good?)

I missed a newer consumer grade autofocus SLR camera category like a Canon EOS 500n or a Minolta Dynax. They are very affordable and user friendly. Probably my favourite "go to" film camra category. BTW really good video.

Robert Wang Definitely! Debatable which to have as “representative”. I’d be happy with either the EOS1, the 1N, or the 1V. And by same logic, the Canon F1 and/or New F1 should be include as analogue to the Nikon F3.

my fav film slr is the Nikon F4. It has a great continuous speed, not stupid fast where you're shooting through a roll in 2 seconds, but not so slow where it basically has no function. The autofocus isn't supremely fast, but im alright with that, since I usually end up with large depth of fields anyways, so I can afford to be out of focus a bit. It also has a flash sync at 1/250, so night time shots can be frozen in time pretty nicely unlike 1/125 or 1/60 speeds. It's also the first film camera that I encountered that had a 1/8000 speed (i know it's not the only camera with 1/8000 but like I said it's the first I encountered) and lastly it is very weighty, but it is still very comfortable to hold (for me at least) and it just FEELS like a serious camera.

I was sitting in my bed emerged into this video, you just can't say no to a tear list. I recently got myself into the canon system. The EOS 620 has great autofocus looks super sleek and is dead simple. The reason I entered canon after trying basically all digital systems is, that I can use all my EF digital lenses on my film body. There are just some clients who want digital images. And this way I don't have to have two separate lens collections. Great video :))

I would put the Pentax K1000 at the same level as the Canon AE-1. It’s easy to adapt M42 Super Takumar lenses, and you have 3 generations of lenses across nearly all focal lengths. Pentax cameras are slept on, especially the MX and LX. One camera I really love that wasn’t on the list is the Leicaflex SL and SL2. It’s one of the best all mechanical 35mm SLR’s ever built. It’s got a great ergonomic shutter dial, with variable/in between shutter speeds from B to 1/2000. Has one of the best shutters I’ve ever heard. The viewfinder is stunning, known to be one of the brightest ever made as Leica wanted it to be just as bright as their M3. The Leica R lenses are just as good as their M counterparts, but for a lot less money, since Leica SLR’s are often forgotten. They are a much cheaper, but still just as good as their fantastic rangefinder counterparts for less. The only issue is that they are expensive to fix, but if one is taken care of well, it’ll last a long time before needing a service. I’d put it at Amazing or God

Nice video but I have to say that the poor olympus trip deserves waay more. It produces really juicy negatives and for street photography it’s a blast. I recently picked up a t4 for a very low price but it didn’t hold a candle to the oly in terms of quick action. Oh and its leaf shutter and there is no buzzing AF motor so it’s super stealth The lens is incredibly sharp too. (The shiny bit around the lens is the lightmeter cell that works without batteries. Very ugly but very functional)

My dad gave me his Nikon F3 that he bought new back in 84'. It hasn't been used for over 25 years at least and he bought a massive lens, flash accessory, and heavy duty bag for it all. It's in perfect condition. I had no idea what quality of camera it was. I got new batteries for it and have been shooting with it. Still waiting for my first rolls to get developed. I'm glad it's up there in quality. I even tried to sell it a few times but I'm glad I didn't.

You're wrong about the Praktica cameras, these are great cameras and Pentacon lenses are really great ,it is not clear to me why you , I don't mean you specifically now, I mean most KZbin analog photographers are so "snobby" photographers, anything that is not Leica and Hasselblad or Contax T2 or similar cameras is not good, it is not true! Chinon and Revue and of course Minolta's are really good cameras but it seems to me that they don't exist for you, I haven't seen any of your videos where you use one of these cameras. Praktica is an East-German cameras, Pentacon company!

Cracked me up when you said your eyelash in the Mju-2 lol. I liked that camera. My folks had the zoon version way back and in recent years, after I dropped my T4 Super I decided to get a Mju-2 because it's cheap, but what pissed me off was just six months of use, and I mean handling it with care too, it just stopped working. The lens won't come out. I've read around that it happens so yup these electric p&s is what you said, walking time bomb. Afterwards I picked up a T5 (because I'm living in Europe now). I enjoyed the T4 Super way before the hype for them. Anyways, if I'm not mistaken, your T4 photo is the T4 Super. For me I'd go with the T4 Super (North American name)/T5 (Europe)/T proof (Japan) over the one without the scope not because of the scope, but because they're marketed as weatherproof over the regular model. I also had a super clean black T3 with all the accessories way back. Feel so cool having technically the best compact shooter or there, but decide to sell it just because I worried if it breaks, that's $1k down the drain, but damn, a clean black T3 without anything is about $2k now. SMH.
