In a fuzz war, nobody wins. Just battles, that is a particular track or musical situation. At the most all the fuzzes are brothers and complement one each other.

pkeraoe I was trying to get even volume... mine have a huge gain boost that makes them louder so you can keep stage volume. I also tried to do to settings so there was some differences and not fully cranked for all of it. For instance, check out the Analogman at 4:05 and 5:26. As you point out, volume had to be up to keep the same volume. The other brands are all classics and and worthwhile to be on anyones pedal board.

I love the Big Muff. I used to own a Sovtek Big Muff, but I used it wrong... trying to be Death Metal heavy, like it was a distortion pedal instead of a fuzz. What really changed my mind about the Muff as a proper fuzz tone was the album "Siamese Dream" by the Smashing Pumpkins. I listened to that album and "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" over and over again, wishing I could get that tone. Then I found out that it was all the Big Muff.

Chad Micheal Thanks for the comment. I tried to do to settings so there was some differences and not fully cranked for all of it. For instance, check out the Analogman at 4:05 and 5:26. As you point out, volume had to be up to keep the same volume level for the different settings. Mine has a volume booster that most other fuzz pedals don't have so about midway is the same. I like all of them and recommend them to anyone. The Big Muff sounded a little funky, I think it's because its a different circuit which causes more treble response...

@Screaminfx_Guitar_Pedals

Yeah, some of these things can get really pricey. For example, some of the germanium fuzz pedals like the 1948 Fuzz that I make need to be hand matched to get the best sound. The transistors used vary a lot in gain so if you place them in the right spot they sound better... however it takes time to measure and match them which drives up the cost. Thanks for the comment!

Cool video, the side by side comparison is great! As someone who also loves fuzz I also own the ZVEX Fuzz Factory, Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Reissue (Blue Silicon one), and a NYC Big Muff Pi and I was wondering; have you ever tried putting the fuzz first? I have used wah successfully after my ZVEX and JH Fuzz Face without oscillations, but I tend to like having the impedance of my guitar pickups and volume/tone knobs interacting with my germanium and silicon fuzzes, so I always put fuzz first as a general rule. Also, if you were comparing these for their fuzz factor alone I would suggest for the ZVEX putting the STAB at 5 o'clock, and the comp and gate knobs all the way down (counterclockwise) to get the sound of the fuzz itself without the cool squishy velcro like mayhem the FF is know for. You'll find it sounds similar to a Germanium fuzz face but with loads more gain, anyways, I enjoyed the video and keep rocking!

The amp is the biggest factor with a fuzz box. Put a big muff through a fender twin and people will be tearing out their ear drums but if you put it through a more marshal type amp you have a much more usable tone.
@Screaminfx_Guitar_Pedals

Two things: 1.) I believe the Smashing Pumpkins use the Big Muff π because at 2:50 it sounds exactly like Cherub Rock, tone wise. 2.) I realize that I don't like fuzz pedals. I would probably like the Smashing Pumpkins a lot more if they used guitar tones that I liked. They don't owe me anything. They can do whatever they want. LOL. Just my 2¢

Thanks for the comment! Mine has a huge booster built in that the others don't , it's much louder to keep stage volume. so I matched the output volumes which is why it's lower. I also agree on the fully cranked which is why later on in the demo I showed each of them at a high and low setting. I figure most people crank them right out of the box so I put a short intro clip of each at the beginning. Full demo has more, but it was getting long on time so I couldn't do more than 2 positions. Each of these deserve a full stand alone demo, including turning the volume out of the guitar down.

yeah, it was interesting, that was my favorite setting on the big muff but a lot of people didn't like it as much... one reason may be that the big muff has a substantially different circuit than the others which causes it to sound a little different. Maybe I should have turned my amp up really loud...muffs like loud. I did each pedal on the same setting though.

Thanks for the feedback! I build some custom slim ones but don't really show them a lot. The big difference is jacks on top saves space. If you have jacks in the side, they take about the same space as this size when plugged in. But, good point and I'll come out with some slimmer ones. Appreciate the feedback.

I should have read the comments better. :) How do you find the Bigg Muff? I find it a bit full on. Where as I can roll back my guitar volume to about 9 and start to get a clean-ish sound with the Fuzz Face, I find I have to roll the guitar volume all the way back to 3 or less before the Big Muff cleans up.
@Screaminfx_Guitar_Pedals
@Screaminfx_Guitar_Pedals 9 жыл бұрын
fishy paw No worries! I put popups in the video, hopefully they work. I agree with you on cleaning them up. I think the reason is that the Fuzz Face overdrives a transistor and a Big Muff has clipping diodes. The diodes are easier to distort the signal and you need to back off more to not hit them as hard. This is also why I think it sounds different than the other ones in the video.

You can get that crazy fuzz, where very note is like ripping velcro, but it you take the time to play with the controls and your guitar's volume, it is a brilliant pedal. Sounds stupid, but I have it as an always on pedal, and turn my guitar volume down to 7 which gives me a sparkly clean tone. Then I can put in an overdrive and it works just like normal, all with the fuzz factory off. Then I can put my guitar volume from 7 to 8 or 9 and suddenly it's a totally different animal. One thing to note is that it sounds better into a sightly overdriven amp, or it if hits a dirt pedal before the amp

So, I GREATLY appreciate a builder (of anything) who puts his work up against the competition. That says a lot about character. Anyway, I was not too sold on the SFX pedals until I saw Nick Jaffe's video on the 1954. MOTHER OF GOD that is a nice pedal. Anyone who is Fuzz shopping or just curious about fuzzes should check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKXFfKhubdlrfqs There goes plans to not put the latest paycheck into something shiny. edit - Seth, How do you shield the transparent series? Your webpage mentioned a background in RF. So is your shielding some trickery learned from RF shielding or something rather basic?
@Screaminfx_Guitar_Pedals

Its mostly basic RF concepts, good grounding and ground lines etc... For the transparent part I use clear material that has a think metal layer on it to keep everything inside a Faraday cage.

If i were to get a fuzz factory and purchase the buffer would it completely fix the oscillations. I find sometime with fuzz the wah doesnt reach all of the high or low ends even with a buffer, I have been using a ds1 distortion between my wah and fuzz but it still doesnt seem to be as effective as a distortion would be unless i turn down the volume by either using a volume pedal at the beginning of my chain or just using the knob on my guitar. I prefer the sound of fuzz with a wah than distortion with a wah when its effective.

Thanks for subscribing! For the riff, let the low e string ring and play octaves with the root on the A string. Start at fret 7 - then 9 /11 / 9 / 7 / 9 / 4 / 7 I like this with a fuss pedal with good bass end!

Loving the germanium Sun Face. Really stood out from the rest of the pack. I personally use a Vexter Fat Fuzz Factory (and I love it) but I may have to add this Sun Face!!

You played all of this in a clean amp? Don't you should have a little gain? Cause somebody said me that a fuzz with a crunchy set sounds better that with the clean channel. Sorry for my english

Both the Analog.man pedals sounded roughly the same, but easily the best together with the fuzzface, rest were so so

how do the first "analog man" fuzz pedals sound live/in mix? do you think the mid-range is enough? i can't tell when they're on their own

Honestly, I purposefully moved a buffer out of the middle of my wah and fuzz because I love how the oscillations sound mixed in to my signal.

Try putting the fuzz before the wah in the chain for those pedals that oscillate. Now try the zvex and fuzz face again. You're welcome.
@Screaminfx_Guitar_Pedals
@Screaminfx_Guitar_Pedals 9 жыл бұрын
iodax Definitely works!! But I like the wah before because you get more wah wah range. Just my personal test, depends on what you like. If you put the fuzz first, they shouldn't oscillar like you say because the impedance matching is better.

+ScreaminFX If you place the ZVEX after the wah then it's not working to it's full potential (bit like myself). I have the Fat Fuzz Factory and if I set it to make crazy sounds I can manipulate the sound with my volume knob on my guitar; the same can't be said for wah before fuzz. I think there are more limitations for my own setup. It is preference, but more often than not, fuzz before is recommended. Great demo! Thanks!

Fuzz factory may be different to the zvex fuzz probe - also may depend on the wah - I have a modded keely vox wah - can only speak from personal experience but when I put the wah first in the chain I get way more range from both pedals and also plenty of control using the guitar's volume knob. Guess everyone's set-up may vary depending on the exact pedals they use.
