My recommendation, regardless of the gin, is to keep the gin intended for Martini's in the freezer (as the ABV of gin will keep it from actually freezing). If you don't want too or can't fit the whole bottle in the freezer, get a smaller container and pour some over into it and put it in for a few hours. The gin will become deliciously viscous and obviously very cold, so there's no need to stir it with ice. Stirred martinis are almost always too watery in my opinion. Instead pour the freezer cold gin directly into the glass after first adding your preferred amount of Vermouth (which should be kept refrigerated!), and then press a lemon peal over the drink and add olives if you want to. With the gin this cold the Martini will now develop a lot more as you drink it over time. At first it's so cold you won't even feel the alcohol, and you will mainly get a lot of the herbal notes that are otherwise very subtle in most gins. And as it gets warmer as you drink it you will start getting more of the classic gin flavor. Perfection!

I disagree for one reason, the dilution of the ice is actually part of the drink. If you were doing straight shots like vodka, by all means put the gin in the freezer. However gin likes to be mixed and is often at much higher proofs than vodka for exactly that reason

Tanqueray 10 and The Botanist are two favorite Gins for Martinis and I do also enjoy the Aviation. I think the amazing botanicals in the Botanist are so wonderful. Outstanding Martini Gins!! I wish I could find Brooklyn Gin in Vancouver and the Melbourne Gin. I am going to be in Melbourne in a few months and I can't wait to try this Gin and many other local Aussie Gins!! I really want to try "Steve the Bartender's" new Gin for a Martini!! For someone who is a lover of Juniper I am really excited to try Brooklyn Gin - neat and in a Martini!! Oh!! Tanqueray is about $45.00 in Vancouver - double the regular Tanqueray. Terrific video!! Cheers!!! 🙂

Your channel has helped me rediscover/navigate the world of gin. I've tried Levantine at a bar (smooth and notes of black pepper and lemon) and have bottles of Aviation, Plymouth, and Tanquery 10 at the house. Of them, I love Tanquery 10 the most. It's lively and unabashedly forward in juniper and citrus....cranking the volume to 10. The higher ABV holds up well to mixing. Aviation is a smoother gin with more spice notes and less juniper. Plymouth is earthy and has a very sweet herbal note. Of the three, the Aviation is my choice for Gimlets and Casinos. Tanquery 10 is king for Martinis where gin really needs to be front and center. I like Plymouth as well, it's a 'workhorse'...but Tanquery 10 is cheaper where I am located, so...I believe we know what will fill its place when the bottle is empty.

Bobby, great video! I’m going to try some of those Gins in a Martini. I’m particularly interested in trying Tanqueray 10 and The Botanist in a Martini. I use a 5 to 1 ratio when I make my Martini’s. 2.5 oz of Plymouth .5 oz of Dolin. The Plymouth Martini is exceptionally smooth! If I am in the mood for a Martini with a bit more juniper, I substitute the Plymouth with Beefeater. (Of course this is only my opinion on what a good Martini consists of) I usually use 1 or 3 Martini olives as a garnish. I read that an even number of olives in a Martini is bad luck!

Funny you should mention it. I am just drinking Plymouth Navy - Dolin Martini (2-1) and I think it needs more floral Gin, Plymouth drowns out the vermouth... But I guess different tastes and all.
@RandomName680

Turtlemaroon Everyone has their own taste of course. I like the 5-1 ratio best. Even at 5-1, the Plymouth and Dolin’s is not very floral. Plymouth isn’t very floral in my opinion. I do like it though.
@Turtle1631991
@Turtle1631991 4 жыл бұрын
@@RandomName680 I agree, Plymouth is not floral at all. What I meant to say is that Dolin is asking for Floral gin IMHO :-) Don't get me wrong Plymouth is my NO1 gin and as long as I have home bar I will have that bottle stocked to drink with tonic. Just not for Martinis... Also bear in mind that Plymouth navy is 57% strong so it is probably like 4-1 with normal gin
@RandomName680

Turtlemaroon I understand. I think that’s why the Beefeater and Dolin works so well. I am happy keeping Plymouth and Beefeater on hand. Two completely different gins. Great for different purposes.

@deividf.9898 3 жыл бұрын
To me Plymouth is so precious I only use it with Dolin dry (freshly opened 375 ml bottles) to make martini. Same recipe with Beefeateris good. With Tanq I dont like Dolin cause they are actually too similar. Keep in mind no matter what your ratio or choice of gin and vermouth are the freshnes and size of ice is super important. I made the mistake of making an amazing martini with ice that had been in freezer over a week and that freezer smell/taste destroys everything
@geoffk777
@geoffk777 2 жыл бұрын
I suspect all of these would be very nice, although the only one that I've tried is the Tanqueray. Even so, Beefeater is my usual gin, and it's what I imagine a classic martini ought to taste like. More specifically, I can picture in my head people having 3-martini lunches in the 1960's drinking this exact cocktail. One negative recommendation--I think that Hendricks is harsh and nasty, and the flavors work very badly with vermouth. It's popular now to order Hendricks martinis with a cucumber garnish, and the whole idea of that turns my stomach.

@@nononsensegindrinking5152 Hello, I used to not like adding olives in my martini just like u. In fact i can drink martinis quite happily without any garnish at all just like you. HOWEVER, one time I read about the history on how the olives end up in the martini, i decided to go out and buy myself a little jar of it, then started experimenting. Man did i find it interesting that at a very specific mix (specific brand and amount of gin + specific brand and amount of vermouth), adding olives, or just a drizzle of its brine, or even a very little sprinkle of salt, actually worked!! It was literally shocking to me. And the reason why I also tested with its brine or simple table salt is that from what i read in the history of martini, the whole purpose of adding olives is simply to add that a slight salt content into the mix to enhance both the flavor profile of the gin and the sweetness from the vermouth without adding sugar, and not for the flavor of olives itself. Very interesting and I found it to be true. But again it only worked for me in a very very specific mix which i have already forgotten unfortunately (the experiment was done almost 2 years ago), except ONE THING, I USED A RATIO OF ALMOST 1:1 ON GIN:VERMOUTH which was how the martinis were used to be made according to its history. Then as time went by, the amount of vermouth's use went down gradually. Maybe u can do an experiment on it one day if you haven't ;) Love your channel btw, from 50% American 50% Chinese.
