Descent video. I’d like it more if you went in depth just a hair further. You mention memory but a great selling point of the Yeasu is that with your 200 channel memory with any items stored you can to a group. A group could be 2m or 70cm repeaters or you could make groups geographically or just your favorites. Any memory entry can belong to one or multiple groups. You can setup scans to scan a specific group, groups, or all channels memory or a frequency band. With the Yeasu you can set frequency limits to scan. Also on the Yeasus they will receive the NOAA alert tones and alert you to weather alerts. The Yeasu has a voice comparator that is a noise reduction filter for better audio. No I don’t work for Yeasu but those features along with a better build quality, better audio tx and rx, an IP rating, a 3 year warranty, legible understandable English instructions, no spurious emissions….all for $89. Take my money. I know exactly where the extra dollars went when compared to the others.

I bought a UV-5R just to have one.. For $25 and free shipping I couldn't resist! My first ht in 2014 was the FT60 and I still have it. I acquired 7 other HT's this past year. After adding the FT70, 65, and 4x to the mix, the FT65 and 70 are my fav's. I could part with my FT3 and Anytone 878 and not miss them. The FT4 and 65 can't be beat for the $$, great value lil radio's!

I have the BT UV5X3. Nice rig. Better build quality than the regular UV5R. BUT GET A TRI BAND ANT WITH IT. GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH 2 ANT A PAIN IN THE HEMEROIDS.

I just got a Radioddity GA-510 and am hitting repeaters 20 miles away and it’s selling on Amazon for 65 dollars as of today. It’s 10W on high power and I did put an ABBREE tacticool antenna on it. Sound is good and I am getting good sound reports. It replaced a UV 5R that quit receiving. I also got another uv5R because I had a bunch of accessories and extra batteries for it and at 25 bucks why not.

Don't get a tri-band only if there is a 1.25meter repeater nearby. Get one even if there is not a repeater. 220 band simplex is a great band for communication. Make the band active.

@@HamRadio2 I now of an area in ID that went from no activity to a fully used band. They have a net each week with appx 35 checkins. Our local club has a 220 net each week. We don't have many right now, but It has spurred people to get radios for 220. It's not that hard to make happen. I also set up an IRLP node on 220 band.

Thanks for another great video. I found that one of the biggest differences in HTs at any price point is battery life. I know it is hard to quantify in a review like this but some of the cheapest radios you reviewed will outlast some of the Japanese models on a single charge

Will the Retevis RT-85 pick up interference easily as the Baofeng UV-5R types do or would the Yeasu FT-65R be a better choice to eliminate the interference? When I'm out in the National Forrest, I pick up interference on three different models of Baofeng radios and there is nothing around to be causing the interference

It is my understanding that the FT-65 has superior filtering to many lower cost radios which results in the radio squelch not opening to many out of band signals. This can cause the radio to “de sense” which lowers input sensitivity due to the unwanted signals which can result in not hearing intended in band signals.

Why not include UV-S9x3 tri-band, still about $30 but is a tri-band 5W and it works quite well. Similar to the uv-5x3 variants but is $30, stick a Nagoya 320A on it and you're all set. Also charges via USB, win! Used mine for 6 months, zero issues, good reports from 20+ miles. Other than being 5W not 8W, it's pretty much the best bang for the buck.

Had friends who were into ham radio in the 70 and 80. With all the crap going on in the world these days. I'm thinking this might be the only way to communicate if sht gets really bad. I have had an fcc license since 95. Dont know if you need one for ham radio. Today's radio's have to be better than what was available in the 70s

I use the TYT UV8000E. It is a 10 watt HT, but only on one frequency. and yes I have tested it. It is no longer being sold, but the TYT UV8000D, has replaced it. Cost is 70 to 80+ dollars. And I really like my E model. Plus my E model came with a good selection of accessories. It is Dual band, and dual watch. 2m/440.

What’s the deal with licenses for a glorified walkie-talkie? I know the HAM community takes this seriously and the threat of fines exist. My question is who is gonna triangulate on my position, acquire a search warrant and enter my property to find the offending equipment. And then the offender. Who’s gonna fast-rope from a helicopter into the wilderness to bust me if I use it on a hike to communicate back to my base camp? If I want to do this as a hobby, of course I’ll get a license. The community will rightly reject me if i don’t. But for outdooring and emergency how does license status change anything? .

​@@CorePathway You can use FRS and MURS for outdoor activities, which are both license-free. There is no need to use the Ham frequencies for the situation you are suggesting...EXCEPT... Emergencies.... For emergencies, are you going to buy equipment, put it in a drawer and forget about it, and only use it when emergencies arise? I often ask this question in relation to firearms - go buy a handgun, put it in a drawer and forget about it until you need it. I am sure you will be a crack-shot. First Aid is another example - when was the last time you gave CPR or tied a tourniquet? Ham Radio and all of its features, frequencies, methods, modes, examples and everything else, give you the practice you need to be an *efficient* radio operator in an emergency. It isn't about licensing - it is about practice and training. (It's also FUN but you didn't ask about that part, lol)

@@HamRadio2 Good answer. I just got done with a 18 hour wilderness first aid training course with hands-on practice. And I sucked at first. And second try. Someone in the class (mostly other Boy Scout leaders) mentioned that there are ham-to-cell phone repeaters/translators. But would I know how to reach them?

@@CorePathway I've been looking into some wilderness training myself. I have done some, but I don't consider myself to be experienced, and I could certainly use some more training. I don't know about ham-to-cell phone repeaters - there is nothing called that, but he might have been referring to a phone-patch on a repeater. The repeater would need to have access to a landline phone number, and you can use DTMF tones from your radio to key the repeater, activate the phone patch, and dial a phone number. This was often used before cell phones were so prevalent. But I am not aware of a way to patch radio to a cell phone - honestly, why would you need to? If you are out of cell phone range, it doesn't seem like something that would work anyway.

You would think Alfa, India and Kilo companies would have some sort of entry rigs. I do not expect UV5R prices. But a nice, George Jetson friendly rig. Do not need all bells and whistles to use local repeater. Actually, an Icom IC2/4AT would work. Can do one band at a time. But with dials, switches, and the addition of a tone board could work.

You should also try the Smiley antennas, especially the telecoping ones. Combine a tuned one with a counterpoise from that Canadian SAR guy, and its probably the best setup outside an external antenna setup.

The RT85 paired with a spare battery for the GM-30 GMRS radio makes a great combo that charges via USB C. Great for those of us that don't want to bring around charging docks like it's still 1994.

I am hoping to get some help on picking a radio or possibly some upgrades I can do to mine. I go off-roading with a group of guys and we have been struggling for over a year to come up with a radio solution for communication between units. We all have Baofeng UV-5R radios on our rigs and operate on the FRS and GMRS frequencies. I am running a Nagoya UT-72 antenna that I have mounted to my machine with a grounded rat tail. I can reach out far and receive from far but I get an insane amount of random chirps on my radio, to the point that I have to turn it off cause it is constant. Is there a better antenna, a filter, or just a different radio that will resolve my issues? Thank you for any help!

I have some Baofeng RD-5Rs and BF-F8HPs as well as a UV-5R. I like them just fine. The DR-5R gives me DMR and with my hotspot I get the world of DV. The BF-F8HP has 8Watts and from my porch I can talk via a repeater 21 miles away. The 5Watt RD-R5 and UV-5R does not key the repeater. Cheap 8Watts and DMR. The best part is they are all based on the UV-5R which allows for switchable accessories. Cheers

man... Im not agree with you in some of the opinions in the best radios under 100$. For me and in my experience the uv5r is not worth it because the receiver get overloaded with any antena longer than the factory one. In that case, the uv82 is by far a better radio for it receiver. I used it a lot in the field climbing some montains and it survive getting me contact over 40km in simplex, but there is 2 major issue with this one. The receiver is better than the 5r and other like the 9r, h7 or A58s (all of them got overloaded with any antena longer than the factory) but is not descriminate what to here if there is a stronger signal far away from the frecuency selected. For example, climbing a montaing here in Santiago Chile we are using the 146,260 for Sota but at hight of 2600 mts my 82 was picking up echolink from 146,420 so you end up hearing things witch you are not suppose to hear. And the second issue.... the uv82 is a fraggile radio and it dont have a good battery. Is not worth it to buy a the 8w for 70$ because is the same fraggile radio with a little more power. For me the best radio under 100 is by far the Quansheng TG-UV2Plus. It has close to 10w (300mw in Low, 4,5 ,medium and close to 10 in high), a really awsome receiver, a battery witch could last from 3 days to a hole week, Subtone detector with a press of two bottons, and a really rugged desing who could hold a few accidents (I drop it from a moving downhill bycicle at 50km and still working like brand new but I dropped my 82 from my bed and the 2meters receiver got dead) . Its a little bit heavier than the 82 and the speaker is a little bit worse than the 82, but you can do Satelite with it with no problem but there is two issue. 1. you have to learn it menu because it operation is all under commands, but once you learn it, its faster than baofeng radio in operation. 2, it is not chirp compatible, but you could assing names in the memmory channels in the radio. there are other features like battery alarms for you and the other guy, audio meter in numbers, from 0 to 9. Maybe for sattelite work, this one for send and RT490 for receive are a terrific combo for it rottary knob on top. With my Quansheng at the same mounting using the stock antenna my first contact was at 98km and using a tappe measure 3 element yagy I reach 160km. So please, try it by yourself. It is a really awsome handhell close to yaesu or other brands.

I have the uv5r and the FT65R and tbh the uv5r picks up just as much traffic and from the same distance as my 65r. The thing that has me grabbing the 65r as my main radio though is it just has a cleaner receiver were the uv5r somtimes does some chirping and popping for some reason from time to time the 65r doesn't do that. Side note I tried what seems to be a genuine nagoya 771 antenna on my uv5r and zero difference it actually made it worse for recieving. It was a terrible fit on the 5r anyway so I tried it on the 65r and it fit beautifully but didn't notice any increase in reception but didn't see and decrease either. I drove around one night transmitting back to my home contacting my son to see if I could reach him from some of the points that I knew died out with standard antenna and same thing with the nagoya so all in all I'd say nagoya gets a big thumbs down from me, I just hope I didn't damage my radio from transmitting on that nagoya antenna, its still working but I've heard it's not good if the antenna is junk.

I have tried all of the cheap chinese radios, and ALL OF THEM are better then the Anytone 878 on FM. I am truly dissapointed on the FM reception on my Anytone 878, to the point that I carry another radio for FM, or just leave the Anytone 878 at home, because DMR is less important to me.

Yeasu ft 65 avalible now Kool ,the Rx is heaps more...I got those uv5r iii ,triband transceiver,it's 10 cheaper without support,all the fuss then it's in USA an ok now,but in NZ I looked last year,an baofeng,wouxon,pofung in 2018 were ban from sales,so btech is not and lol is just rebranded and locked bands,all the same, so a ham licence It would be acceptable,I know someone good,without license ,cops saw radio a few times and jumped saying "why have you got a police radio" like it was actually from a station,an I merly replayed it's not it's a HAM,and there no car WOF or Registered was dismissed also,lucky duck nit a baddy anyways,So 6 times let off no driver license,or car,2,radio oh ok?,and the last one was is else's car an got taken fair enough was showing off to friend how visited an car drive. is that a baofeng ,you got it from Ali,,,ress didn't you,umm arh sir,it's..and I couldn't tell him I'm not one of those ,it was news someone up noth talked to police you see ,onna baofeng,, but I actually got into HAM radio,ham is the first 3 peoples initials that started amaTure radio,so it didn't matter as I didn't hide my radio ,so dur,because the car check we don't have to get out but they say me ht,well,I have had 6 , one left,one take and 4 sold for 100 dollars each..oops cya out

FT-60 is 4x faster scanning than the FT-65. I have both. The FR-60 has a knob for VFO or memory selection so you can easily twist the knob if it gets to a station that you want to skip past. The FT-65 requires 2 front panel button presses to stop and restart the scan. The 60 has a squelch knob. I grab the 60 over the 65 generally as it is a better, quicker scanner. The 65 goes on hikes along with a GMRS handheld.

It is also older tech, but I know they are tried and true, like the Kenwood V71A and D710G. I don't care much about scanning so I never compare models for that feature.

Retevis RA685. Under $100, dual band, dual display, USB-C rechargeable. Software is a nightmare. No extra batteries available yet. Compact size and belt clip on the radio, not on the battery. Similar to a UV-5R in operation, better looking IMHO. Has the NOAA channels already built in so it saves some of the 128 memory spots. Have you seen this one? KN4DBS

Brand new HAM, can't say I know much but grabbed an ABBREE AR-F6 Full Band Dual Standby 5W 999CH Color Display for $49 off the slow boat (Ali) and for the exception of having to really tweak your settings to get decent battery life a good cheap HT.

I have the 8w baofeng, as far as I can tell it's one of the "real" ones by everything I can tell. Got it for 20 bucks in 2019, just looked at prices for my coworker... Yikes. UV5R prices have shot up, cheapest I saw in a few minutes on Amazon was about 35 bucks Edit: this is my first view on your channel, hoping to find a more updated version for both my work buddy and me. I'd like a better and more reliable radio for emergencies though.

Re: the UV5R...there are different variations in this model. One is the commercial variant, that allows out of band operation for both VHF and UHF. These are not type accepted if I remember correctly. The other variant is type accepted by FCC and is imported into USA. There is a third variant that also transmits in the 1.25 centimeter band(220) in addition to 2m and 70cm. I have not seen this one but have read reports on its performance. I do not believe that these have been imported into US, but it is possible. Thanks for the video...been a HAM for over 30 years and have General class ticket...73 OM

Jason, That HTX-202 brings back memories... when I got my license (in I think 2004) my Elmer (now an SK) loaned me a 202 so I could get on the air. I used that thing for several months while I saved for my first radio, which was a Kenwood TH-F6A (which was an amazing radio). From your list, I love the TYT TH-350. It's pretty clean and works quite well, although its UI is a little wonky (as all of the Chinese radios seem to be). 1600mAh battery seems to last forever. It's been very popular in our club (probably due to our club repeater being on the 1.25m band). When I bought mine, it came with the tri-band antenna in addition to the other two stock antennas for the same price.

I ordered a UV25X2 from BT over the weekend, and got it at 10 am THIS MORNING H-TOWN. Standard shipping That is not a BT Handi. But if the 25x2 is an indication, BT must want to get its product to customers fast. Or, does BT keep stock at or near Amazon Fufullment Centers, to shorten delivery? Actually, I am impressed with delivery. Ordered rig based on HR 2.0 review last week.

Dump it and get something new. Much better stuff today, especially regards batteries, frequency agility, digital squelch, and more. The 'big 3' are still tops for HF and mobiles but not worth it for HT's unless you're using a digital mode. One of the nicest things about these cheap HT is that they're "no worry" rigs where scratches, dings, and falls don't cause your heart to stop- that's why I bought my first one long ago and I've never looked back.

@@HamRadio2 I didn't say I don't understand the difference, I said I see no need to upgrade. The Retevis fits my use profile fine. Some people have bicycles and they take them out every now and then and spin around the neighborhood or maybe do a short trip down the local bike path. All they need is MAYBE a $300 bicycle and they're happy, it fits their needs and they see no need to upgrade. My bicycle wheels alone cost over twice that and some people think that's nuts. All about what you're into. Some people are hardcore into radio and they have to have the latest and greatest HT with all the digital bells and whistles. That's great, I get it. I'm just not that into talking to people on a radio as my main hobby.

Lots of Baofeng radios are FCC approved. The UV82 has a Part 90 version. The GT5R is basically the same internal radio as the rest of them

@@HamRadio2 What ever happened to ham radio operators caring about having a radio that had good clean spectrum. Ones that had great audio. Boafengs work, but at what cost. Radios with a decent front end. I don't mean to be an asshat, but lets push people towards radios that put out a clean signal, ones with decent audio and one that will last. I'm so tired of Baofeng being pushed as the radio to get for new hams.

Have you tried the JIANPAI 8800 yet? Triband, AM/FM, big color screen, IP54 waterproof, airband, and USB-C. All for $60 when in stock over on Banggood. Some KZbinrs say it has a better speaker that the FT65R. Also, I hope you do some Smiley antennas like their telescoping models with counterpoises.

Tnx for the interesting video. It seems to be targeted at beginners, which is fine ... they need to start somewhere. Lots of talk about features, websites, a bit of repetition. But very little talk about RF performance and NO actual test figures. Huh? These are *radios* after all and RF performance is what it's all about. For example I have a Bow-Wow UV-B5, several friends have 5Rs and other BF models. All are TERRIBLE on receive, extremely sensitive to RF noise so they're useless if you're anywhere near broadcast stations, paging transmitters, ham repeaters, police radios, etc. etc. I would never buy another Bow-Wow radio at any price. "If you want a cheap radio really bad, the Bow-Wow is a really bad cheap radio." Info like that would be helpful to newbies. I applaud your enthusiasm but wish you had a little more factual info. 73

What people don’t know is baofeng radios can do a lot more than you think if you know what your doing And also I talked to multiple ham radio experts that took the expert test and I talked to the fcc and those radios from baofeng are usable on gmrs n ham radio frequency IF THEY HAVE AUTHORIZATION from those people who are on the frequencies mentioned

I'm new to the whole radio thing, and I believe now is the time to start looking into other forms of communication. Just in case Brandon in the rainbow house causes WW3. With that said, what is the best long range hand held radio? Is GMRS or Ham better, and what exactly does a repeat or do and is it something separate? And what about wattage, tri band, etc. I can't go crazy expensive, though I want a great hand held radio that I don't have to upgrade in 6 months. Please HELP!!! 🙏🏼

Ham vs GMRS - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKqQiImCZpKLrLs Both services use repeaters. Range depends on line of sight from you to the other station you want to talk to. You can use a 5w handheld to talk to satellites and the ISS, which is 227 miles above the earth, but this is only possible when the ISS is overhead and you have clear line of sight. Talking ground station to ground station, you have many more obstacles in your path, so it is impossible to say the exact range of a radio without knowing what is between you and the other station. It would be anywhere from several feet to several miles. Receiver sensitivity and clean signal is more important than wattage.

I have heard you mention fishing Lake Fork before, I try to fish Fork as much as possible im 240 miles away in Western Arkansas so I don't get down there as much as i wish..I am taking my tech test April 9th so I will send my call sign when I get it and it would be cool to make radio contact when im down there...Im probably going to buy the Yaesu FT65R to start off with an upgraded antenna...im trying to keep it under $150 to start as this will be a boat radio and i can get it with an upgraded antenna and spare battery for about $150...If you have a better suggestion please let me know...

Great video. You left out the Radioddity GA 510. Great little radio. Does 10 w. Got it from Amazon for under $65. Also it comes with 2 2200 mah batteries. Also, the Alinco DJ-VX50T for just under $100 from H.R.O.. Not a bad radio. Liked it so much, I bought a second one. My. Goto radio is a Baofeng GT 5R and I also take one of my Yaesu's , Alinco or Radioddity. 73's and have a great one. N3ymd.
