We knew something was missing! We shot this vlog back in June 2023 when we shipped the Low Rider ST and Road Glide down to California for Born Free 2023 and we thought we'd put it together and share it with you all! Matt was having issues with head buffeting on the ST and did some intensive testing with different windshields. Watch the vlog to see what he ended up going with - it might surprise you!

Thanks for the video. I had the same experience except I'm much shorter than you at 5' 6". The stock windshield created "no" buffeting but the wind noise was loud. I then purchased a med size Clearview which created massive buffeting. I then bought a 6" Klockwerks which reduced the wind noise but created a little buffeting. I then bought the 10" Klockwerks which created an insane amount of buffeting. It did reduce wind noise and less wind hitting my body and helmet, but the wind it did allow was dirty buffeting air. I went back to the stock windshield and I'm totally happy! I would say I wasted my money on three other failed windshield purchases, but If I did not try other shields, I would not have appreciated that the stock shield was the right one for me. The wind that does hit my helmet is at least clean air with no buffeting, which for me is a fair trade off.

Great video and definitely an experience that a lot of people like me are having. Paul Weiss at HD and his team did some really good work on wind management on the LRST, and incorporated the CFD work with the Stock, low deflector and 10" tall HD screens. For a laugh, pop the stock screen back on and go for a spin. It's actually the best balance of wind management. I have found no aftermarket screen that works- I've tried them all. Each one brings a trade-off between wind noise, buffetting, and protection. I have found the best outcome (though a little weird) was the clip-on ADV screen extension on top of the stock screen. you can get a nice angle on the deflector and it is almost silent for the rider. Passenger experiences are also not that great with tall screens- you need a massive Road Glide screen to best protect the passenger.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with the windshield. Good to know there’s more people out there with similar issues. Interesting that a flare windshield like klock works doesn’t do a better job than the stock one.

@@IndestructibleMFG I have found that flare or flip screens always introduce wind noise and turbulence. No OE manufacturer uses them. I can not get access to Clearview in Oz without selling a kidney, but I think they've got the best design to keep airflow smooth. Haha, I just remembered something - you've just learned lesson #1 wirh motorcycle windshields- it's either full face covering or helmet completely in air. You can't go half way.

Matt! I'm currently going through this struggle man! These are my thoughts: In my experience and after watching this and other windshield review videos on KZbin, when it comes to the ST, regardless of the brand, if the highest point of the windshield lands right in front of your nose (which is where the KlockWerks 10" lands in my case), you’ll get an insane amount of helmet buffeting, maybe the buffeting gets even worse because of the extreme recurve they have. The ClearView MEDIUM ventless model (BTW, it looks SICK!) I currently have is 2 inches lower than the 10” KlockWerks model and the highest point of the shield lands right in front of my chin and it reduced the buffeting considerably, however, I do think that when it comes to windshields (again, at least on the ST and based on my experience), they need to land below your chin in order for the helmet to receive the wind-flow and continue the aerodynamic stream… OR you go full-on EXTRA LARGE and get a windshield that will cover your full helmet! This is why I think you were fine with a shorter shield and what I think I'll do next, either get a 6" shield from KlockWerks OR a SMALL ventless ClearView, they're a bit longer than the OEM one and short enough to avoid buffeting. J.

I flipped the mirrors, it seemed to help a bit. I think the air flow to the sides of the windshield and dirty air deflected by the mirrors both mix and cause buffeting. I’m 6’, using a klockwerks 10” as well and Shoei rf-1400 if that matters to you

Seen newer videos with Matt running a Klock Werks shield. I guess the short Clearview didn't work out. I've been through a few shields myself and back to the stock ST one. I'm 5'8" and at speed, the medium and large Clearview were terrible...crazy head wobble. Not to mention the feeling of the taller shields having more wind force against them which affected the handling a bit.

I had a street glide. Same issue with that bike. I tried a few different screens. The best I ever got it was using a Memphis shade screen with wind deflectors mounted to the forks. They look a bit naff but It stopped a lot of buffeting. I think the problem isn’t the wind coming off the top of the screen but more the wind coming UP from the tank area? But agree on long fast rides having your eye balls shaking in their sockets for miles and miles is not fun.

Any of the recuve sheilds cause the buffeting at speeds. I'm 6'2" and went back to stock. 600$ worth of sheilds in the trash. Stock sheild provides lil protection but clean air. The recurves cause turbulence at anything past 80.

@IndestructibleMFG I'll try and give that one a shot. I thought the 8" klock was the answer and it was not. Medium clearview was also bad at speed shaking the helmet. Tall clearview was even worse. I see the Small clearview is 2.5" taller than stock ill give it a shot. That's all I really want. I just want a lil more eye protection when riding no helmet. With a helmet the stock sheild is fine. Like u said no buffeting. Thank for making this video and telling people what I've been preaching for over a year. The taller isn't the answer

Ive watched every LRST windshield review I can find. I really wish someone would review windshields with a passenger. My OL has ridden thousands of miles with me on several bikes. She won't ride on the ST because of the massive buffeting. Its not bad for me with the stock windshield but for her its terrible.

Agree, my wife struggles with some windshields, it's why we got rid of the Ultra Limited- no screen stopped buffetting for a 5'10" woman... I found the stock screen on the FXLRST actually the best so far for us both. Any tall deflector or screen introduces noise and buffetting for her. I have the low bronze deflector from HD, no buffetting for either of us but a lot more wind pressure. Best outcome I've ever had was a Clip-on ADV style extension on the stock screen, that can be angled slightly back. true story.

@@IndestructibleMFGyou'd be the first and would likely drive some traffic through your channel! The LRST is a gold balance in size for touring, like a "Honda Pan". Two can travel nicely with a good seat and tail pack. I got a Sundowner, it's the best for both of us, and the touring backrest for her. She's 5'10", and the stock screen creates clean air for her. Any taller the air collapses onto her, the low HD deflector creates more air but on the highway for long days is like being on a naked. Do it!

My Sport Glide has a super tiny screen, its sitting very low and I get ZERO buffeting, I have also a BMW R9T which has no screen at all, I get only clean airflow at any speed. This tells me that the smaller the screen the lower the buffeting, or you just go for an XXXXL one. My Low Rider is coming in 2 weeks time, I am 5 f 7, so most probably I will have to switch to a smaller screen as I noticed some buffeting during the testdrive.

my brand new FXLRST arrived yesterday! Yeah! No Buffeting with my 5'7'' on Saddleman seat but... LOTS of micro vibrations. This means a lot of noise behind the fairing.. Made 300km today and i got ringing in the ears (despite earplugs) . I now removed the windshield entirely, went for a short ride and bang!, this works quite well. Only clean air flow and not that much noise. Not sure about the current look of the fairing but I will work on a solution from here, Worst case I can opt for the original HD wind deflector.

I'm with you! But even more like a gorilla lol... I'm 5'11" but with a 28" inseam. I sit at a table next to buddies that are 6'3" and I sit taller (until we stand up). I've learned that I prefer micro tiny short little windshields for that very reason. Clean airflow is better than ANY buffeting. I'd rather keep that pressure off my chest, but have the ventilation in my helmet anyway. Works for me...
