My Sportster 1200 with a 4.5 gallon tank is a top heavy pig. I really wouldn't recommend it for a first bike but then again, it's cooler than a lot of bikes. lol

My first bike was 1200 Forty-Eight. They’re top heavy but take it slow and you are good. Honestly the Softail street bobs handle better than sportsters in my opinion, the motor is too big as a first bike though. If it’s not your first bike and just your first Harley then you want to skip Sportster’s 100% go right to Softail or bigger

My first bike was an xl883 with mids and I got in a really bad wreck after 6-7 rides my second/current bike is a 1200 custom with forwards and I’ve put 8000 miles on it in about 4 months still wouldn’t tell someone to get one as there first

The narrator advises against covering the front brake while riding because that contributes to panic stopping. This is contrary to what is taught by the MSF.

I took it 2 years ago and was told the opposite. The reasoning is that having your hand completely away from the brake slows your reaction time thereby lengthening your stopping distance and increasing the chance you will strike an obstacle in your path.

@Jonathan Glazer yeah, Jerry Palladino teaches the same in his classes. I took the Louisiana State Troopers MSC several years ago, thats also what they teach. I have always covered my brake while riding in traffic in town or when behind a vehicle on the highway. I consider it defensive driving, you never know what that person is gonna do and always assume that they don't know that you're there because about 75% of the time they dont, so always assume the worse and be prepared to react. Its only a panic stop if you're not prepared and you start grabbing for brake, then its guaranteed that you're gonna lock it up and probaly lay it down. If your brake is covered and your calm and alert watching whats going on ahead of you in every direction you shouldnt freak out. If you're that dang nervous and on edge, you're not ready to be in traffic, plain and simple. I personally haven't ever went through HD's course but from what I have heard about it I don't necessarily agree with all the techniques. I went to the State Police course even though I have ridden since I was a kid and I thought that it was a very informative, I learned that I still had bad habits. A good defensive driving course is also a smart idea, they are geared toward cagers but they teach you some invaluable lessons. Riding a motorcycle is a fulltime exercise in defensive driving.

I test rode a Sporty 1200 while trying to talk myself into buying it. At 6’03” I felt cramped and looked like a circus bear on a bicycle. Too bad because it was a nice bike.

@@ORflycaster I really like the look of those Sportster 72s but they're way too small for me at 6'2" 250. I bought a Dyna Street Bob for my first Harley and even that was too small and uncomfortable for me. Touring bikes were made for big people, I loved my Dyna and 2 Softails but nothing beats a Road King.

My first bike was a 2004 harley xl883. I knew nothing about bikes but it only took me a little less then a months time of riding to get the hang. Sadly I lost the bike 3 days ago. I got t boned right before arriving home so my beauty is no longer with me but once I recover and save I'll be looking for a new ride once again

I suggest looking for a really good deal on a used Harley of your liking, learn to ride on it (le$$ painful learning bumps) and then trade it in for your dream bike. You can start on anything, I learned to ride on a road King and it was super easy. Of course there will be obstacles but riding a motorcycle is learned by training sessions and practice, most of which you can now a-days learn on your own by watching you tube. Having said all that, If you are really tall you will have difficulty riding small frame bikes and it will hamper your learning, the same can be said for the reverse.

I worked for HD when the XG's came out, I can personally attest to them being hot, heavy, underpowered, and so CHEAP feeling in the saddle. Only one thats half decent was the street rod 750, and that was just an overpriced XG

Bought my Dyna Wide Glide when I was 23, the biggest issues I had was manouvering it in reverse with my feet pushing a monster, the braking it was another one but my bike is forever

My first Harley was a Iron 883 (terrible top-heavy, uncomfortable bike)....that lasted 6 months, then it was time to trade.... My advice...get the bike you can ride for the long term and obtain some training from a reliable source. In other words, skip the beginner/transition bike and learn to ride a proper motorcycle.

883 is a good starter bike. If you develop some skill fast you'll move on to a bigger bike pretty quick.

I'm a little different as my Dad started me riding mini bikes as soon as I could hold one up, and Im 52 now, so I've been on a few bikes in my time. I had been riding motorcycles for most of my life when I started on a big bike, everyone said to start on a Sportster, and I did when I was 18, a 86 1200. I absolutely hated it, I felt cramped and uncomfortable. In my opinion, a Sportster is NOT a good starter bike, they are top heavy and light which makes them very unstable in traffic or windshere. I'm am 6'1 200lbs with a 34 1/2 inseam and arms that hang to my knees, though so a Sportster did not fit me at all. The mid controls on it made me feel like a grown man on a tricycle. I always recommend a Softail model to a beginner, the Street Bob, Slim, Deluxe, or Heritage. They are a little heavier, but they are, nimble, well balanced and have a low center of gravity, which makes it stable in traffic and very rider friendly. They are what I call a forgiving bike, as far as they are reactive in turns, it doesnt take a lot to make them lay into a turn but they dont have the lean angle of say a Road King so low speed maneuvering takes some practice. I always tell new rider's to stay away from Sportsters, if you want to start on a smaller bike, get a Shadow 750, or Vulcan or something of that nature. That's just my opinion, honestly I tell people buy what you want and learn to ride it, but be realistic. If you're 5'5 and 130 lbs and have never sit on a bike, don't go buy a Road King or Road Glide. Take it slow, practice low speed maneuvering and braking everyday until it becomes second nature and the very most important thing......learn and practice defensive driving.

Apologies but those new listening please disregard the comment on front/back brake ratio. Trail your back break, approx 10-15% of your front. Your stopping power is your front brake, apply first softly then constantly increase pressure. Straight line breaking.

Not really true. Speed plays a big role in how you apply your breaks. Slow speed, more rear break. Faster speed, slightly more front, so the bikes front dips to get better traction. I'm probably not explaining it well so take some motorcycle classes. Everyone can benefit from more training.

@@derfskittlers6125 At very low speeds true(like under 10-15mph or 5% of your time on a 🚲). I have taken a class from the guy that tested the braking systems for Buell. I was the only one he ever had in his class to get a perfect on the written AND road tests. That said, the braking method I describe above is correct.

@bizzsnatch I got my license by taking the 3 day course. I was told there that 70% of stopping power is in the front brakes. I have noticed that it is true when riding. I'm not sure about the percentage, but the front brake does have more stoppage power. Thanks

Harley has gone down hill. Their heyday was 90’s to 2010’s. Quality and build have gone down tremendously IMO. 2006 Fatboy here

Quality went down everytime the company needed bailing out, which was more than a couple times. For f sake there were like 4 or 5 m8 engines that didn’t leak on the showroom, you twin cam fellers have the last of the decent ones in my opinion. If you’re curious my parents only rode harleys, I ride dirt, sometimes a stuntbike, or just find me riding circles around sportbike kids on my Goldwing;) pls pull up on me. I very much want all the smoke

@@yamondakawazuki8941 I have a stage 2 2019 RKS and it has never leaked a drop of oil or had any problems at all, it's still under 30k miles, but no problems so far. I had 3 twin cams before it, a Dyna and 2 Softails, and loved all 3, but the RKS is the best one I've had...

I'm still starting out, but I've been told by multiple reliable sources that an Iron 883 is a great beginner bike. Confirmed by riders I know who own Irons, plus my friend's dad who sold Harley bikes out of our local dealership for over 9 years.

Street 500 series as well as the 750 where nothing more than lukewarm Indian made cheap copies of a Honda Shadow from the 1980s dressed up and Cafe styling and no drive shaft. It was overpriced as well. It was pathetic at best at an attempt to bring a new riders. I remember when Harley-Davidson was offering to pay for your motorcycle education course as long as you bought a Harley. Oh boy I'm going to save $150 and get into debt for $20,000 really okay.

'03 100th anniversary Duece is the bike I have now I was given to me in my dad's will it was running fine until a few months ago he fell on it and there's apparently a wire on the battery when you fall it automatically shuts the bike off I've driven about 3 times after that but the last time I rode it, the check engine light would come on while I was moving and I tested it going down the road and it seems like it has an issue getting in high RPMs the engine light goes away if I take it easy and stay around 3k RPM it's ok but one I go over the light comes on and when its on while I drive it the bike feels like it wants to come to a dead stop everytime the engine light flashes. If anyone can point me to a channel that will help me solve this please let me know or if you have an idea please leave a comment

i've never drove a motorcycle,scooter,dirt bike or anything of the sort and learned easy on a iron 883, i don't get why it is not a good beginner bike , it was literally the first bike of any sort that i ever rode and only took me a few days to have it out on the highway doing 70 mph...easiest thing i ever rode lol, on top of that since i never rode a dirt bike or scooter or motorcycle i was a scared driver and still was out on the highway within a week's time and rides easy in ow speed traffic this guy is totally wrong sorry

Harley Davidson doesn't make a high quality motorcycle, but Honda does, the 2024 Honda gold wing is infact the highest quality motorcycle ever manufactured. Who wants to pay $30,000 for something that requires more maintenance than road time. Not me, I don't consider a Harley Davidson a real motorcycle at all, the Honda gold wing is a real motorcycle. It only requires basic maintenance, it is also the highest quality motorcycle ever manufactured.

And really for your first bike get whatever you're comfortable with and the one you want if you're a little p**** foot and scared get you a Sportster my first bike was a 2004 Harley Davidson Deuce high compression Screamin Eagle heads Screamin' eagle cams high performance pushrods oil flow bike was built out to the max 11.9:1 compression get the bike you want and remember just cuz it goes fast don't mean you have to go fast I mean if you're scared and all

My first bike is a Vstar 1100. Just started last August at age 52. I feel very comfortable after 3k miles of riding. Thinking of a Roadking, but a used 1200 Sportster is SO MUCH cheaper! Being honest, I'm one of those morons who just want to own a Harley for the sound of the exhaust. LOL. At least I can admit it! As to looks? Sorry, but My classic Vstar looks amazing, rides amazing. Hard to even find a Harley I like the looks of better than many or most Japanese bikes! Only other bike I like the looks of is the Indian! (which everyone hates more than Harley!). An almost NEW Indian is so much less than a much older Roadking! Not sure why Harley remain so overpriced! The service must suck beyond belief based on the endless hate reviews and local feedback! Indian get's more hate than any other bike I've ever heard folks mention! Well, I got two or three weeks to decide before I have to bring my Vstar in for tires. Buying my second bike, while Vstar get's some service and tires, and....

A Harley of any kind is not a good first motorcycle. Any small running Jack bike is much better suited someone to learn how to ride on because you were going to fall down and go boom. I saw a video with a new Rider on a brand new Sportster and she went down and had $1,400 for some damage. There is a reason why everybody used to use a nice little Honda 250 Rebel to learn how to ride a motorcycle on. I learned how to ride a motorcycle on the rebels ancestor the 185 Honda Twinstar. I put $36,000 miles on that bike on my learner's permit all over the state of Florida. I outgrew it the Honda shop rebuilt it sold it to a lady who learned how to ride on it and was using its teach her daughter how to ride. I wonder how many people learned how to ride a motorcycle because of my little Honda 185 TwinStar getting passed around for people to learn how to ride on and then getting past to somebody else. It introduced me to the joy of two wheels. That's a bike you learn how to ride on not any kind of Harley used or otherwise.

My first bike is a Softail Night Train with a stout 107 big bore. Not exactly a beginner bike but it works for me. I'm 6'6". I took my MFS course on a Street 500 and felt like a monkey fkn a football.

@@vettonator not exactly a great choice for a first bike but as you are a big guy the bike has to fit you comfortably. Like you said on the 500 Street you look like a monkey fucking football. If you ask a biker with Harley tattoos from head to toe what he learned how to ride a motorcycle on he will tell you a little Honda Kawasaki whatever they were selling in his small town. I started on a Honda because he only motorcycle dealership in Port Charlotte sold honda's. Now of course there are other large motorcycles that could have accommodated you but you chose a Harley that's your choice that's what you wanted nothing wrong with that. I saw a Shovelhead dresser on a trailer I went inside the gas station asked how much the big red motorcycle was outside and I was told it was $1,000. I didn't know what a Harley was I just saw a great big red full dress motorcycle and the size intimidated me and I knew that was not the bike for me to learn how to ride on. I am so happy that I had a bike that was suitable for me to learn how to ride on because there were no bad experiences and meet learning how the pleasures of two wheels.

Very true but not necessarily always true. I learned on a 77 Yamaha 125 Enduro on/off road, before I was even close to the legal age for a driver license. I lived in the country so we tore the backroads up. I also rode dirt bikes from the time I could hold up a bike. Then when I got a license my dad taught me on a old 70's model Yamaha 750 street bike that he had put about a million miles on. Then I got a Sportster 1200, which I hated, at 18. In my opinion Sportsters are not beginner bikes....period, especially if your 6'1. At the same time I know people who as you said, started on a Rebel, some on that started on Sportsters, I know people that started on a Electra Glide, Road Glide or Road King. It's all in what you want, your physical stature, how much common sense you possess and quite honestly your fear level. I think people who start at a young age tend to get on small bikes first, older people want to jump right on a big bike because they dont want to take 10 years to actually learn proper technique. Honestly not all people should be on 2 wheels despite how bad they want to be.

im sorry, but this is so wrong! A) suggesting a street 500 over a sportster 883 is so screwed up, they dont even make streets anymore! and B) saying the softtail is the higher end of bikes instead of the baggers or trikes..... just wrong. i went from a Kawasaki vulcan 900 to a Street Glide, ride what you like!!

What a terrible video. They string you along, talk about two bikes, and then go into a pointless commentary about how riding motorcycles is different form riding a car. Absolutely useless.
